I am brand new to Freespace, I recently D/L Shivans super pack and decided that since I am starting fresh I would begin with the FS1 port. Everything seems to work fine. My questions comes to "Shield FUnction". I am past the mission (the Darkness and the Light) where the the briefing tells me that all ships have shields. I can see what looks like a picture of my ship with shields in the bottom right corner, but when I try to "augment front shields" I don't see a difference (aka. X-Wing having double front shields).
I also D/L a faq on FS1 and according to the faq I was supposed to go through "Advanced Training #2) before "The Darkness and the Light" and that never happened. That training was supposed to introduce the shield functions and some new missles....am I missing something??

The shields can't be augmented beyond 100% so you're only going to notice anything once you take damage. Once that happens using the keys will be a lot more obvious as you'll see the energy drain out of one quadrant and go into the other.

Yea shield power is determined by the opacity of the shield icon. So if the front icon is nearly transparent than your front shields are low, if its gone, they are dead in the front. Then you can use the arrow keys to split power from the other sides to bring the front back to full opacity.

And pressing Q will equalize shields. ;)

A lot of people thought the training missions in the Port were redundant (since they had already trained in FS2) so we took them out. They're still available as an optional download from the website.

Yeah but a lot more people are playing the port first thanks to ShivanSPS. We'll have to get him to add them in.
