Title: new stargate
Post by: Bobboau on August 25, 2006, 08:18:48 pm
now... I don't realy think what the Jafa did was so OMGZFTW!!! horable, in fact, it seems like a good workable stratigy. the only thing that wories me is the fact that it'll only take about half a second for the Ori to figure out were it came from and go there to nuke it.

Normally, if I havent seen an episode of a show, I don't click on new threads about that show the day it airs. But that's just me.

It is? Excellent, Atlantis is having an abnormally long run of consecutively excellent episodes, certainly good to see after the shight that was most of Season 2.

It was everything that a Stargate episode should be, and nothing it shouldn't be.

SG-1 wasn't even all that bad this time.

last nights episodes kicked ass. but it sucks that we got to wait 2 weeks for new ones because scifi wants to run a best of marathon. and when does bsg start up again?

Any guesses which network is gonna pick up SG1 after SciFi cuts it at the end of Season 10?
i hope they wrap it up before they get cut.  theyre just setting themselves up for more episodic content as of right now.
Personally, I think its a bad move on SciFi channel's part.
I mean, c'mon... cut stargate?
Well, I guess if they're dumb enough to air crappy made-for-TV movies and even wrestling, hey're dumb enough to cancel Stargate SG-1....
Title: Re: new stargate
Post by: Nuke on August 27, 2006, 02:14:08 am
i think they realized that they were flogging a dead horse by not ending the show when they should have. and becausew sg1 is no doubt a massive strain on the scifi channel, and because atlantis is doing better, its only logical to kill it.

No it isn't. Last night's episode was merely "good", which compared to the run of idiot plots we've been getting could easily be mistaken for excellent, I suppose.

I haven't actually downloaded the entire episode yet, but considering the crappyness of most of Season 2, and the subsequent awesomeness of No-man's Land, Sateda, Progeny and The Real World, they're having a damn good run.

Sci-Fi cancelled SG-1 for 2 reasons:

MGM have been steadily jacking up the licensing fees while reducing the show's quality, which - combined with lower ratings - has vastly reduced the profitability of the show. But Sci-Fi also own the rights to air any potential 11th season, meaning they've got MGM in a choke-hold.

The Stargate franchise as a whole will take a huge hit if MGM are unable to produce SG-1 as their flagship series. So by cancelling the show, Sci-Fi are forcing MGM to either lower their licensing rates or cripple the show.

And, to Sci-Fi, it doesn't matter which of the two MGM chooses. They can't make a profit at the current rates anyway, so they might as well not air the show. But by threatening the franchise as a whole they're engaging in a game of chicken with MGM over the rights where the only two outcomes are the loss of an unprofitable show or the continuation of it at more profitable rates.

they only problem with ratings is that they haven't been accurate for years, if not decades since they don't include recordings, people watching the dvd's (although they have sales-records of that) alone or in groups, (inaccurate) ratings in other countries and of course the ever famous internet download demographic.
So in the end going soley by ratings of the US is going by vastly incorrect numbers.

TiVo is what ****s the ratings the most.

I've always hated that moronic misconception. I mean, how does downloading hurt the initial ratings for when the show is first aired? Who the hell honestly expects large groups of people, large enough to effect Neilson ratings, to blow off the show when they would have watched it, to instead download it? If you can watch the damn episode, why the **** are you going to *not* watch it and instead spend a day or two downloading a low-resolution, splotchy-quality version?!

****ing TiVo

The funny thing is I just met a biology major named Adria who sort of looks like Baccarin... which led to a very funny conversation.

"So... you're going to be an archaeologist."

"Yeah... and I guess you have special plans for me, don't you?"

The original cast has aged exactly ten years since the first season. Ten years does make a difference.

You're missing the point of ratings. Sci-Fi doesn't care how well the show does. It cares how much the merchandise sells (Or maybe not, depending on how much of a cut it gets), and how much coverage the ads get. People hate the ads, and so they take them out of the rips, and so Sci-Fi doesn't care how many people watch the episodes.

The only exception is product placement.
