Title: Phoenix Team needs you!
Post by: Qwer on August 26, 2006, 08:04:47 am
First of Phoenix is large Polish project. "Works" started in Febuary. It was about to be just small partially-R1-based campaign made by 2 persons, me and Mekton (project leader), however in the begin of holidays we've rewrited whole storyline, mod plan, missions plan and so on (yeah, it smells Inferno :D ). Currently the team is made of 6 members and we plan to do something which can rival superproductions like BWO or MT (*gets slashed by beams from IceFire's and Styxx's ships* :p ). Whole campaign will have over 70 missions and use large mod made of FS2, already fan-made ships from many places and also Phoenix-desinged ones. Whole campaign will be something beetwen intense action (like in Derelict) and developing storyline (like in Transcend). Release date will be somewhere in first half of 2007. Unfortunelly we've got problem because some key ships are Inferno R2 ones and it doesn't seem that it will be released earlier than end of 2007 :P . So here's the point of this thread: we need 2 good modellers. If anyone is intrested, please post in this threat and contact me on 307-878-482 ICQ or PM.

Did you make sure to get permission for the models you will be using?

I really wish you good luck, but this also worries me a bit too. It's not you fault. Absolutely not.

But there are a lot of mods out there, which are looking for new mebers. Some of them may never get completed.
Well... ok I'm leading a mod team myself, but actually I didn't even found the mod.

The modders should help out other mods. When a mod is complete a lot of modders will be able to join other projects.

Sorry... OT....

Is permission really required? I mean the ethos around here seems to be one of open source, plus the idea of releasing the models (assuming they have been released publically) is so that anyone can use them in their own missions/campaigns?

I've got a few non-V ships in the campaign I'm working on at the moment, all but one (Scooby's Formidable model) I've grabbed from Hades Combine.

I wish you luck, but I gotta warn you - big projects with tons of missions and contect have a very big chance of never getting finished.

Unknown - permission isn't required if you use public-released models. You just have to put author name in credits.

Trashman - first of we've got determinated team members. :D Second: FREDding is actually a bit easy, we've got experienced FREDders over there, we've only got problem with making mod for campaign, that's why I've created this topic (there are only 2 Polish modellers and both are busy :P ).

DaBrain - so get to work on Lighting Beams for Inferno R2. :D

If you've taken it from an invidually released mod you're using a model that was released for anyone to use so you can probably get away with not asking. If you are taking a ship from a campaign you probably should ask permission. Those models weren't publically released execpt as part of the campaign.

Either way asking for permission shows a certain amount of courtesy to the modeler and also allows him to know where his models are being used. Modelers are more likely to release models if they know that they are being used so it's in everyone's interest to do it.

I've never heard of a single case of a modeler in this community denying permission to use a model that has been released either as part of a campaign or on its own anyway so it isn't like there is much chance of someone saying no to your request.

Lucky you! FREDers are usually what is lacking :D

Depends on the mod actually. At conception MG was FREDder rich and modder poor. Now it's more like the other way around since everyone has figured out how to model :)

I'm sure there are a few others that are that way around too.

Do it anyway. It shows good form and courtesy to the modelers who made the ship, and it avoids any potential hazards that may pop up later. If it's been released in a model pack you don't have to worry about it, though, just make sure to credit the author.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely plan to credit the original model creators - just your post made it sound like even using them was a complete no-no :)

"Qwer - Unknown - permission isn't required if you use public-released models. You just have to put author name in credits."

My response got lost just before posting yesterday so I'm late comming back to this.

It's just very good manners and shows you respect authors.  Most FS2 content here has been made with implied consent for others to take it apart and make stuff with , as long as proper credits are maintained.
Showing you are a stand up type person from day 1 will get you farther in the community, than having to deal with a situation later on that taking the time to send a note would avoid.

All MODS are publicly released, the difference if it is considered Public Domain. This community really doesn't (and hasn't) dealt with that issue, yet. A lot of other communities do NOT consider the mods they release to be Public Domain. So I think it's good to break in new modders from the start about modding etiquette.

If there is a "read me" with the file, then looking at that first also tells you initially the author's attitude.
Statements like:

"Do what you want" - Just crediting is required...

"Fine, but ask me first" - Use their email or forum PM

"I will hunt you down with wolves" - Definately need to ask, but get prepaered for a probable rejection.

There are FEW instances (unless you do like me and get sources from outside the community) of mods being "exclusive", meaning they were intended for that mod only. Just something you might need to be aware of.

l8tr!

Qwer  I can lend you some of my 'no longer used' models. They're skinned and rigged and your free to use them. Chances are you'll need to reskin them because their paint is so un-FS2ish and sticks out like... well you name it. Just say so if you want them.

Vengence you got unused models you've abandoned? If that's the case how about doing what Aldo and Raven has done and make a "Model Dump Pack"

It's been years and I'm still digging through them for inspiration/kitbashing on occasion (my biggest hurdle with them though the .max format :P, use .3ds people!!! Kidding)

Everything I alter is done with Milkshake, Truespace 3.2,  and 3DExploration 1.5.5 (so the 4 main formats I can open are .cob, .lwo, .3ds, and .obj and about 12 other lesser used formats.)

there has been incedents with permisions, one situation that comes to mind was the whole thing with the SAaB mod were they used models made by someone else (outside the comunity) without geting there permision and converted them for use in FS2, when the creators found out it was like they had raped there child or something.
(NOTE: there is no SAaB mod anymore.)

if you use something you should notify the origonal creator, if it was a stand alone mod you can think of it more along the lines of giveing them the good news that the model they spent all that time working on is actualy going to be used, I remember my early years, I would just churn out all kinds of stuff , trying to think up what would be useful hopeing someone would pick it up.

Well we're not yet sure which models we'll use and we don't want to yet ask for permissions which we won't need. :p After we'll finish completing our mod plan, we'll ask for it.

Bob not to bring back bad memories, but that was a crock of ****...

THOSE models were made by Borg124 and I have HIS permission to use them (belatedly)...

There is a SAAB mod on my PC (Tiny though it is)...

Next time someone wants to cry theft they need to do some damn research first before claiming models that actually belong to someone else..

The ONLY model that ever belonged to them was POSSIBLY the Saratoga.. I do remember I sent DG a Hw1 file BUT I also sent him the One from Borg's pack so it could have been either one. I never knew which one DG used for sure.  Reacting on the moment I did a Me Culpa on behalf of the mod and look at what happened anway (piss poor attitudes and DG left Modling for over a year). I never got the whole story till long after the incident and could really care less from their behavior.

I'm only speaking up because now that we have the facts of what actually happened as it's better to crush misinformation about past events then to restate it over and over...

Regardless they claimed the models displayed on DG's page were theirs. They were wrong PERIOD.

There my rant is done...

Is that from the golden age of Diamond Geezer?
Any chance of releasing the SAAB ships, ? I would happily make a mini camp.............

Honestly, haven't done squat with them since. But I have been waiting since the SFC3 team also got them (I showed them around and got them permission from Borg124) and we got dibbs if they ever finish re-working them (adding polys, ect)...  I do lots of things like that behind the scenes, merge talent A with Resource B so we can get access to better model C...  In theory.

My question is: Who is going to host it? I have nobody to host the file even if I do post it and I have a 512kb upload limit here.

EDIT: Hey Qwer, would you be interested in my new Juggernaut I just posted a while ago? Its a sweet ride ;).

1. You can host it on Hades-Combine. http://hades-combine.com/web/index.php?ind=downloads&op=section_view&idev=1
2. Unfortunelly your models don't fit Phoenix due to some reasons I can't tell. :p

There's a ton of file host sites now, but most of them have time limits that delete if it no one DL's it within 2 weeks to 30 days...

Man all this talk about the Hades is making me wonder where Raptor is at with his HERA!!!

What has been happening with that sweet high polygon insanity?

And Qwer, you COULD tell him (and then kill him!)   (or just PM him the reason if he can keep a secret)...

In this moment it doesn't matter anymore as Vengence is in the team for few days. :p
