Title: Book advice wanted
Post by: Sandwich on November 19, 2001, 06:14:00 pm
Hey all, I'll be going on a short-ish jaunt to the states to visit relatives (Florida and NY, if you must know..  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ), and my dad already has plans to hit the bookstores in the area.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I like sci-fi, so far the best I've read has been Timothy Zahn and Peter David (of course, Tolkein also rules, but that's another genre...). I'm looking to enlarge my David Weber collection from one measly book, and to start an Iain M. Banks collection, but I was wondering if you had any other "highly recommended" books...?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

If you like Weber, you'll like Drake.  Get the Hammer's Slammers books.  Get them now.

Edit:  David Drake.

Oh, spare me!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif) We've had higher security checks for decades then the US has ever seen... Does the US have male and female soldiers armed with assault rifles patrolling the streets of her cities, to a frequency of one per 20 square yards downtown? Does the US have armed guards with walk-through metal detectors at the entrances to her malls? Does the US have bomb-squads running around the country for at least one real bomb scare per day? Does the US have armed guards at the entrances to her coffee shops!?

Didn't think so.

BTW, I know that seems harsh - it was meant to be. But it's not directed at Raa Tor'h or anyone else on these boards - it was simply to get a point across.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Try Harry Turtledove. Really good Alternative History author, lots of fun to read his books. If you want something epic, try Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Verrrrrry nice.

I'm not sure if youre into this kind of stuff, but a book that I really enjoyed was Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy (no not the computer game damnit!).
If you havent heard of either, its about a covert multinational counter-terrorist team called Rainbow (Six means head guy, leader, CO). Thats about all I can say without revealing too much of the book.

It was an OK book. When it comes to miltary fiction, though, I'm starting to like Patrick Robinson. He wrote Nimitz Class, Kilo Class, and somethingelse class and is writing more, they're all really quite good.

If you're into some fantasy, you might want to try reading Mercedes Lackey's books. I suggest the SERRAted Edge series. Elves in modern day US.

I really like Stephen Baxter ("http://www.fireandwater.com/Authors/interview.asp?interviewid=89"), a hard sf author. His ideas are great, I read his Manifold Sequence (three medium-sized paperbacks) in a little under a week, could'nt put 'em down.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Tom Clancy's okay, though it's been a while since I read one of his ones. (R6 comes highly recommended from me, too!) I'm a hard sf'er, now.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I like the Rama series of books, they're really very good.

However my favourite book of all time would have to be Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Not a fan of his work then? I love all the Diskworld books, they're excellent.

And as a rapid introduction:

Good Omens features a demon and an angel who are sent to earth to bring about armageddon but as it turns out they like eachother and earth, soon they join together to try and prevent judgement day from happening.

Thats just a quick overview - it's very funny and I haven't even mentioned the Anti-Christ or his Hell Hound, go read it to find out  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Ditto. (also Moonseed and The Light of Other Days).

Also:
"The Past Through Tomorrow" by Robert A. Heinlein (old stuff, back when they didn't know what Venus is really like, but good stuff).
"Earthclan" by David Brin (I haven't read the sequels yet, but this one was good).
"Starfarers" by Poul Anderson (people go on an exploration at near light speeds which will get them back to Earth 120,000 years later, langer than humans have been on Earth)
"Steel Beach" by John Varley (interesting view of a society living in the moon after being kicked off the Earth)
"Far Futures" by various, ed. by Gregory Benford (really far out stuff in far away futures we can barely imagine).

Those are just some of my recent favorites.

Joe.

Which Weber book do you have?

I'd suggest something, but all of the good Scifi books that I've read in a long time have been already mentioned.  But I would suggest "Lord of the Flies" for a regular fiction book.

That's a pretty good one but the storyline doesn't take off until later.  I really liked "Honor of the Queen," "Honor Among Enemies," "In Enemy Hands," and "Echoes of Honor."
Ashes of Victory was also good, but it concerned politics more than combat, so if you read them for the combat, stick with the ones I mentioned.

I hate to break it to you, but the US has been positively humane in their treatment of the Afghans, compared to almost any other nation in history.  If stuff like that had happened a century or two ago, there would be a lot more than a 'few' civilian deaths.  Not that I mean to highjack this thread, but don't harp on the US when they've showed admirable restraint in the face of such obvious provocation.  Or should I remind you of what they could do?

I'd love to have something to recommend, but sci-fi books are really hard to find here in Brazil. I only read the Dune series, some Culture books (had to get them from the US), Contact (really good), and some books by Stanislaw Lem (old books, but extremely well written, and the guy had incredible imagination).

By the way, If anyone wants to send me sci-fi books, I'll be glad to send postcards back.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

On novels I'd recommend the Dune series, (the ones Herbert wrote) Foundation, and the Lensmen series, (dirigible planets baby!) Ringworld's also pretty good. (Puppeteers rule the universe!)

Seroiusly Read a book about terrorist phsycology or, if you have already got one of them get Icewind dale or the other 1 million books like it. (i purposly suggested non-sci-fi books cos you need a break man! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))

Shrike: I was working of some millitary cou (whatever) theries and their very itersting - mainly its impossible in a domocracy! unless you steal tanks, chopers etc from countrys own millitary bases! That is so unfair! in Afganistan you can just buy loads of old russian tanks from a country that suports your action and all you have to do is foot the bill and win! In UK you carn't even get a handgun! what sort of chance to Cous have? eh? Its better in 12th century when you could kill loads of poeple justly! AND you can wear that nice shiny armour AND no bombs fell on you.

Got them, plus all the rest of the SW continuation books (well, almost all... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ). Actually I think that that series (with the Yuzang Vong (sp?) is one of the weaker of the books - the ones by Timothy Zahn or Kathy Tyers (sp?) are excellet.

One another note, I'm here in Florida (Raa, where r u?!?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) ) and I've picked up the first Ender book - almost finished it in an afternoon sitting.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) I'm hoping to pick up the rest of the series in a used bookstore.

Can anyone (Shirke...?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif) ) give me a rundown on the order I should read the Culture series? I can't find most of them, and I don't want to start reading in the middle.

Btw, another old, old time fave Sci-Fi of mine is "Jumper" by Steven C. Gould. It's not super sci-fi (just about a kid who can teleport), but for those of us who always wanted to escape our normal teen years, this was a good book.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Don't tell me, your going to get mad at people spelling your name properly now, right?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

On another note, I had a laptop once... it was perfectly capable of playing... Descent.

Still, great fun  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Oh and dad had one that was more than happy to play Descent II and Wing Commander Prophecy, kept me occupied for ages when I was in hospital  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Heh, nah, that Perl script in your sig is really cool. Impressed me quite a bit.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
