Ever since around the beginning of August, FRED puts the following in the fs2 files in the background section:

This seems to break the background loading in the game, taking the line out restores backgrounds again. A 31/07 CVS build I have doesn't to this, so it looks like it's a recent thing. I would put this in Mantis, but it hasn't sent me my password yet :(
