Title: What do you want in a campaign?
Post by: Polpolion on September 03, 2006, 02:06:04 pm
What kind of features are you excpecting/do you guys like/want from the "average" campaign? (things like how long it is, additions to weapons, edited tables)

My campaign ( FreeSpace 2: Distorted Reality (http://www.freewebs.com/fs2dr/) ) will have a fair amount of small additions such as: more weapons, possibly a massive fighter sized heavy missle, and more player-flyable shivan craft (there is more, but I don't want to spoil it).

In short, if you could choose one feature to add to this campaign, what would you add?

PLEASE HALP ME HALP YOO!!!

Me, I just like campaigns with a good story. Take Technological Superiority for instance. It had great potential, but it seemed... thrown together. There were several glaring plotholes, the coding was poor, and I had to seriously tweak a few missions to get them to work, since the guy failed to properly input some new textures.

So, just make sure that it works, before releasing it. I get really really tired of fixing mistakes I find in campaigns.... :blah:

I'll settle for coherent story, as long as it's fun to play.

As long as I can play through it without experiencing too many bugs, I'll be happy. The story should make some sort of sense as well. As long as you get that down, then I'll gladly play it.

Just one big release...like me.

Good history(but I prefer something original rather than cool stuff I have seen and re-seen before).
New ships and weapons,as well as changes on already present stuff are ok.
A different storyline to the one we saw before.Something like "What could happen if...".

I actually had grand plans for mycampaign... but they dwindled.

Jsut chapter 1 was supposed to have more ships (like hte NTCv Echelon - the tragedy is that the ship is done, but hte missions with it have been throw out) and more missions - but lack of help caused tthis plan to be cut to size.
I even planned a branching storyline with 4 endings.

Guess I'll have to leave that for Chapter 3 :D

The only thing I ever want for a campaign is for the creator to write the story first, then decide what mods they need.

It's not exactly a principle I've been good at following in the past.......

I'd like to see some sort of... explosion... like... thingy.

If you can build a story around a new ship, it has to be a good one (I don't mean it's automatically good, I mean it must be made well). Building a story around a group of new ships would be harder. Especially if your ships suck. But that's a modding issue, not a Missions and Campaigns issue.

I mainly like to have fun gameplay with a balanced difficulty and minimal mission bugs. A believable story (doesn't necessarily have to be epic or original, but something well thought out that gives the missions some context) helps a lot and mods can also be good if used correctly, but the gameplay comes first as far as I'm concerned.

And the Shivan homeworld. You can't omit that. It's about the only thing I remember from Plasma's old RAMALAMADINGDONG Campaign thread. :D

That should be an HLP law; if you're going to make a campaign, it is mandatory to include at least one obscure mentioning of Bosch Beer somewhere in your campaign. So say we all.

Back OT: Regarding what I want in a campaign; just good characters. I just want characters that are fun to hear about, to fly with, and that you actually feel something should they die. Homesick is really one of the only campaigns that have really done it for me, I mean, who didn't love token Vasudan?

Thank you for helping, most of the useful ideas here will be taken and used in my campiagn. Please keep posting what you would like in it, though. These ideas not only help my project, but will probably help some other persons project, too!

P.S. Nuclear1, did you receive the e-mail I sent you about  my project? :nervous: I sent it to your Yahoo! account. :nervous:
C'mon! I need you. (It seems as though one of my other testers has deserted me, but I'm still bugging him with e-mails too).

Things I expect from campaigns:

1. Playability, balanced or rather easy difficulty Many campaigns I have played just lacked any playability because of the difficulty.
2. A plot that makes sense. It should also be close to reality and should never exaggerate. No two fleets of dozens of juggernauts facing off each other. No resurrected war heroes.
3. Thorough FREDding: no overlapping messages, immediately accomplished mission goals/directives. Using the Escort List, Initial Orders, disabling Player Orders for critical mission craft and any kind of transports, freighters, and cruisers.

I agree entirely. This is the reason I liked Sync, and to some extent, Transcend.

Ransom Arceihn takes care of similar stuff...

Anyway most players would like a good ending, not 100% good(major losses)but not completely unhappy.

*Alpha 1 limps off in his damaged Herc II into the distant glow of the Capellan Supernova, The piano theme music from the original Hulk series plays in the background. The camera pans back to the debris of his wingmates, the shot widens and you see a derelict Sathanas and derelict Deimos class cruisers, a sobek or two and an Arcadia station, the evidence of a huge battle taking place. A Mara drifts in to view, apparently dead in space, its engines flicker, then burst back into life. The piano music fades out, dramatic music fades in as the Mara turns to follow Alpha 1, as it pulls away we see that it is followed by its three wingmates. Fade out....................*

meh, both happy and unhappy endings are overrated. They just need to balance out. Like in the main campaign, you lose the Colossus, but you destroy the....Sathanas. That balances out. The best ending I have ever read is in the Hand of Thrawn duology. Anyone read it? No, you should....

Lots of extra st00f :)

K fine, a good plotline, a couple extra ships for variety, (can be from other mods), a few big, big, big fights (capship battles, couple 100 fighters (in waves)), like the one in derelict where you bring in the lucy to the station.

Make it like derelict, but with a different plot. And warn us if we need any mods, cause it's really hard to defend an unshielded, suicidal ulysses from seraphim launching harpoons.

A good campaign designer should include whatever mods are needed with the release. That's just common sense. (ie, NOT Tech Superiority. The two major modded ships were missing completely, and I had to hunt them down myself. )

In addition to most of the stuff posted already, I have a few more things to add.                                                    1. Give the campaign characters and not just random people who die all the time. Examples of campaigns that have this are Derelict, Sync, Homesick, Revenge, and Transcend.
2. Give the player a character that is not a mute. Examples Transcend, Revenge.
3. Add some creepy stuff to some of the missions like in Transcend. I loved the spooky nebula missions.
4. An origional plotline.

Well Snail for example doesn't like player/speaking characters.Sometimes the player has a role,of course an NTF pilot would be pleased to destroy a civilian transport ecc. but you see the messages an dthink that they come from another source.
I can't believe that many people want tragedy like endings for campaigns.Well,I would like such an ending in FEP,but in general I prefer cool endings. The final "mission" in Sync is a typical example of bad ending, but I think it's minimalistic and strange, with the player sorrounded by Shivans while they take care of the other Allied ships...

One of the things I'm toying with is to give the actual feel of being a squadron commander by having various additions to the command briefs; people in the squadron sending him mails about various things, talking to the destroyer captain and the aerospace group commander, stuff like that.

The problem is I have to make all the player's decisions in that respect for him.

Regarding defeats, I think the thing is that the official FS campaigns are two-for-four in Pyhrric fashion. Operation Templar and Silent Threat were decisive victories, but the FS1 and FS2 campaigns were victories with heavy cost.

I tried such kind of interaction, but for different purposes.

You're right,a campaign needs some defeats in the plot, making Alpha 1 unable to interfere with the Fate.

I like great storylines. Even moreso than heavy action shootem up. For me, A lot of the fun playing fs campiagns isn't for the action but for the storyline of it. To see where it all ends.

Why I loved Transcend so much. Such detail into the plot. I noticed a lot of people complained about the copycat missions It and sync had. For me, Those copycat missions played into the atmosphere and storyline and thus made me enjoy it more.

I've played some campaigns where it was heavy action with just tons of fighters and caps ships shooting beams at each other and some of the most random
Those were the ones I never finished :/

You don't need to just toss in the shivans at random just because they are "there" and you need something more to shoot at so they just randomly show up and for no reason have a luicifer with them. Thats one thing that a lot of people need to learn to do right. Adding shivans to their campaigns just to have a new bad guy where they show up out of nowhere with a whole fleet for no reason..

I know what thing I never want to see in a campaign again. I no longer remember what the name of it was but it had a mission where it made you be a slow bomber to well... bomb a ship then it had you turn around and guard some transports against fast fighters.

Thus, You had two wings of bombers with about half of them gone or hurt badly trying to fight off faster normal fighters from unloading hornets at your escort.

it was the single most retarded thing ever trying to stop and dogfight in that piss poor bomber with mostly heavy missiles and he had us outnumbered.

Worst mission ever.

Well,on the other side ITDoH missions have potential vut lack on design... RTB directives, for example, are not correct...
