That's a pity. It was always a risk with his job, I think he accepted that, but I still feel sorry for those who knew him.

Nooooooo!!! :( :(
I loved the crocodile hunter.
His show was the only educational thing I ever watched.

Wow :( But I don't understand, how did a stingray barb go through his chest? I've swam with stingray's before, they don't seem like they could do that.
Title: Re: Steve Irwin Dead
Post by: Flipside on September 04, 2006, 12:09:16 am
A big one might, but I think the report more likely means that he got stung in the Chest by a Stingray, wounds in the foot etc are dangerous enough, but a Stingray sting to the chest can be fatal, since the poison attacks the lungs and heart, and can get into major arteries. :(

Apparently there are something like three recorded fatalities from stingrays according to what I just heard on the news. Kinda ironic that after all the dangerous animals he's tangled with he gets taken out by something that kills less people than bees do.

I feel sorry for his family and friends.

aparrently the barb got Steve right in the heart.

What a tragedy.

I've seen his kids on TV - cute little devils. It's horrifying that they will grow up without a father.
Yes, Steve could be a bit anyoing from time to time, but I loved to watch his show :(

2 things.

1) :(

2)  A stringray?  Seriously, I expected it to be in a blaze of glory wrestling 2 crocs whilst using a stick held in his teeth to pick up a deadly king cobra.
Title: Re: Steve Irwin Dead
Post by: Stealth on September 04, 2006, 03:03:43 am
lol yeah.

but on a more serious note; anyone ever swum with a stingray?  if they get agitated, they'll suddenly (and sharply) turn directions and swim the other way.  when they do that, their tail slices through the water, cutting anything in the way.

that said, i can easily see how it got him.  guess it just got him at a really, really, really really really bad angle :-/

To be fair, these are the sort of convict sentenced for transportation for such heinous crimes as stealing a book.

What would be cool is if they named a zoo or something after him. Or a national park with lots of crocs and stuff.

Also, I read that in an interview with Conan O'Brein, Steve Erwin said that his death would come at the hands of a croc, and that before be died he would pop open the croc's mouth and yell "Crikey". That's just class man, rare indeed.

Although when watching his how, it was only a manner of time. Wouldn't have bet on a stingray though.

Man, this really hit me hard and was totally unexpected  :sigh:   I really liked this guy.  And his death was some sort of irony of fate. With all the dangerous things he was doing who would have thought that a rather calm stingray laid so hard on him  :(

I will truly miss him. My sympathies go along with his family and friends.

Crocodile Dundee is not a movie! It is a documentary film, the finest in a generation, about rugged Australians from the outback adapting to life in civilized society. And even though, yes, you are all a bunch of convicts, I don't see why that should lead to a particular affinity for crocodiles. Unless doing dangerous **** with large reptiles was a punishable offense back in Ye Olde Britain, and that's what your forefathers got exiled for

edit: Why not choose to frolick about with some of Australia's other exotic species? Imagine it: The Koala Hunter. Or, The Kangaroo Hunter. Though I guess hanging around in trees all day eating eucalyptus isn't as cool as ripping small-to-medium mammals apart with your collosal jaws of death.

Whilst the timing could have been better, I was oddly enough having a discussion earlier about how much our own Media's need for 'reality TV' had contributed to this. Steve Irwin made the choice himself, theres' no doubt about that, but he made the choice to pander to the public love of 'Thrill TV', and that kind of media has led to people's death on more than one occasion.
