Title: We have a problem...
Post by: Fineus on December 02, 2001, 11:00:00 am
It appears my recently aquired virus ripped out my guts when I took it out - evey single image I've ever collected from the internet is gone. This includes everyones renders, the hundreds of wallpapers and so on and so on that I had stored on the HD.

Obviously, I'm not happy.

However since their totally gone and so is the virus, I need to start rebuilding what I have. Some of it I can get back from backup CDs - but the last 4 months or so are completely gone (which is a hell of a lot for me).

If anyone knows any sites that have internet wallpaper, renders, anything that I might have had on the computer - I'd like to have the links please. Just post them up here and I can try and recover what I lost.

Noo!  Not your pr0n collection!!  (sorry dude, I know that's not what it was and I would be hella peeved if it happened to me, but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw 'images from the net')

Now that the inevitable is out of the way, everyone may proceed with the sympathy.

I dunno, this may be new to you, maybe not...

Maybe not pr0n Shrike (perhaps some wallpapers though....)

And thanks Thorn - and for everyone, assume I know nothing of any sites, that way you might remind me of something I missed...

I would give you some wallpapers, but a certain jackass deleted my upload folders and couldn't be bothered to tell me about it...   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/mad.gif)

Didn't see that coming Setekh  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Thanks everyone - I think before I start downloading everything again I'll backup what I've got and make the whole thing a bit more efficient. Keep those links coming though please  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm not being lazy - but I know that search engines can miss things or I can forget to search for something and miss it all together (like Relic pr0n for instance, I wouldn't have thought of that). So :P to you  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Btw, you do know that so long as you haven't fully written over all your stuff, you can probably recover any of the junk you had there before? Just get a data recovery program like RECON and follow the instructions... it's worth it if you value your collection that much.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I don't think that'll work - it all just seems totally wiped...

No, seriously, that's what data recovery means.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Data isn't lost til it's written over.....or the HD is screwed. Correct me if I'm wrong though

well, as windows keeps writing temp files, and loads of them when it starts, and as it writes it anywhere,w/o any hierarchy on what cluster it'll use... don't hold your breath.

 http://www.mdstudios.f2s.com/ ("http://www.mdstudios.f2s.com/")

Feel free to use anything you see there.  Just a fair warning, the freeyellow account is just a general crap account.  Its mostly old renderings and a few stupid pics people have asked me to host for them.  The f2s account is my main account and has all of my newer renderings.

And on this note, due to MS's really crappy coding, I lost my entire backup which included my ICQ contact list, every movie from spacebattles.com I had (which was most of them), and all of the models I did (including my Tigg model and that Cruiser model that I never was able to finish.), every 3dsmax scene and all renderings on my HD (which thankfully are still online), and a whole bunch of other stuff.  I've just spent the last 6 hours restoring what I could.  (needless to say I wasn't at all happy when I found out that nearly 3GB of hard work is gone for good)

Now, if you were on my contact list, please msg me.  I wasn't able to find an old version of ICQ (w/o the gay banner ads) so I was forced to d/l 2000b and try to find that page which tells how to...fix them.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (Yes, it is legal.  ICQ had instructions on their site for the longest time.  However, they...disappeared from their site so I'll have to look elsewhere.)

oh man - thats real bad news thunder. damn sorry.

was it VBS.Loveletter.CI by the way? cos my freind thought he lost every single jpg on his comp just 2 days back becos of it. i told him to quarantine the lot and i downloaded the fix for him and voila - he was back with his jpegs.

moral of the story - be sure u cant recover what u think uve lost. Setekh is probably right and u can recover ur collection , but u must act ASAP to save as much of it as u can

No problem, and thanks to everyone for the links/concern. The virus was called the Columbia virus - as far as I can tell it just targeted image files but obviously for me thats a serious thing (I lost more than 1500 images when it hit). RoachKoach, I did get your email but it's the morning just before college for me now so I'll reply to it when I get back later. And don't worry - I can help with your problem  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Until it's physically written over on the surface of the disk, possibly.... it's possibly only the HD catalogue (links to the files) thats been damaged. methinks.

Thunder: Sounds like now would be a good time for you and me to invest in a copy of Norton Ghost.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I hear that, I might just resort to the ultimate backup device and buy up four or 5 10Gb had disks and plug them in whenever I need to back stuff up... small, simple and ultimatly cheap (and large as well).

Yeah, I might pick up one or two at the next comp show.  Slap my backups on it and totally disconnect it from the system and store it someplace SAFE.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

HDs aren't a good idea. Get something you can chuck around and won't bash up. A HD is a precision piece of hardware - get something hardier like an Orb, a Peerless, a DVD-R.

What on earth do you think I'm going to do with these HDs? carry them around with me like a CD? hell no! I'd put them in a foam padded box of some type and store them safely. Personally - it's my choice, and it also has the advantage of being accepted by every system.

Good thing there's a comp show on the 15th.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)  Been meaning to get some more case fans anyways.  I'm gonna stick one next to my processor to blow air through the heatsink.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Whoa, okay there, stand down pilot, we're on your side here!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Seriously, in the interests of a better backup, that's what you'd go for. I mean, that's what backups are meant to be - sturdy  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Cos if your backup screws up, then... well... not much use having a backup.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Besides, I know the road down which you travel, because I chose it myself, as did my brother. He realised that it wasn't a very good one... and I'm sure as heck not going to argue with the mountainous stack of experience that my bro represents  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
