Better hide the fishies, Im making an under water mod, this is mostly supported by FRED2ers, Im making this myself(with a little help from Venom for the terrain model (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) )so Im not asking for staff and Iv alredy made a few effects for it like water bubbles and stuff floating around, I'll fix the whole explosion concept and shockwave appeal, but unfortantly Im olny going to put realistic weapons and stuff, so that means no shields, but it pays off since you get a minigun that fires very rapidly and you can hardly see them since they are flying around so fast and far, also you'll have other weapons that they use under water
Well Im tired (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

How you gonna get bubles rising from a torpedo trail???
-
If we can get an ani on the trail of the missile (possible, but tricky), then all we need to do is create an ani of a bubble rising and disappearing, somewhat like the damage gas ani. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

No shields, realistic weaponry, and...
(http://www.jskgames.homestead.com/files/gatling.jpg) ("http://www.jskgames.homestead.com/files/home.html")
miniguns?
Now where have I heard of a MOD like this one before... hmmmmm... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) (the picture above just doesn't do justice to the sound that a 30 round per second cannon makes (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))
Seriously, the underwater aspect sounds like an interesting twist on things. One question, how are you going to do the "ceiling" of your water world? Subs generally don't fly through the air after all (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) Is this going to have an X-COM 2 theme to it? I can't say I've ever heard of anyone else doing such a conversion. Might be kind of cool.

I told you that It ("http://www.jskgames.homestead.com/files/home.html") would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

hey! you didn't tell me it was underwater mod! i'm definitively with yo on that! (I had a similar idea, but hey, I can't do everything can I?)
For buble trails: change the particle effect, and give all your weapons the spawn particle effects (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Nifty! I assume that means using the nebula?
You could probably give it a really neat underwater look by giving a top and bottom to the background bitmap. Sandbar on the bottom, looking at the suface on the top.

nope: the nebula tiles are rotating on themselve. but you can make the tile nice enough o have that underwater blur effect I suppose.

Does someone have Archimedean Dynasty? the maps would be handfull.

Thats the thing, there is no ceiling, its suspost to be real deep under water (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

New ships?

Hey, I like it! I've always thought that FS felt more like flying underwater than in space. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I loved that game (the underwater one) it had cool music 4 subs and underwater turrets! (torpedo turrets are so horrible)
Ha the FAT MOMMA thing HA!
I used the green weapon!
My CD is scrathed! Where do they come from???
-
Actually, I think this MOD should be quite interesting. But without shields and the introduction of miniguns designed for underwater usage, mini submarines or one man submarines are going to die very fast.

Beleive me Neo, no shields, mini-guns and one-hit-one-kill missiles makes the game all that more interesting.
The stress and fear of knowing that any moment could be your last, the split-second descisions, running a razor's edge between success and disaster, knowing a single mistake WILL be your last, really get's the blood moving quite nicely (double all effects for multiplay (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif))

The one quieston right now is that, should I have little fishies floating around that you can shoot and could blow up (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Youbetcha!
BTW Zero, I'm working on something for you. Hopefully I'll have it done by wednsday or thursday (if it works right that is (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)) I think you'll like it.
If this is going to be based on either X-COM2 -or- Subwar 2050 then I'm on your design team, THIS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
then again, you can probably count me in anyways (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)

i wonder if you play about with the lighting effects to get a dappled effect on the ships.... you'd probably need new sounds as well, though.

New sounds! are you crazy!! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/eek.gif)
Then the mod would be over 100 mb!

dude, making a submarine mod, it's a TC. You do it at 100%, or not at all, coz otherwise itwill be bad.
-
I don't think adding new FX sound files will push the size of the file up too much. It's voice files that really add up fast (they're longer).

Mmmm, sounds would be cool. But where are you going to get them? Artbeats or something? (The stuff there is ridiculously expensive...)
-
I'm just idly speculating, but you'd prob need;
6-10 new smaller fighter equivalent subs
4-10 large subs & bases
New torpedos, minigun effect pofs and possibly new-look lasers
New sounds for engines & weapons
(maybe from other games)
Altered trails, particles and maybe thruster animations for submarine effects.
Ocean floor model/s.
New nebula files (flythrough)
Maybe (not really needed)
New lighting effects for ambient light (dappled)
HUD ('sonar')
cahnge the mainhall to look underwater (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Should keep it FS2 set, though, have some missions around a sunken Hecate or Typhon, etc

a submarine war in he fs2 universe? I doubt vasudan have subs, shivans don't, the NTF probably didn't bother, and, well...
plus hecates or typhon don't usually crash in seas lol (mmh, russian typhoons does tho (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif) )
-
I don't think you can fire lasers underwater, can you? In air or space, sure. In water? Hard to imagine.

yes you can, for exemple the US army serached for a very powerful laser that would turn the water into gas in a fraction of secs, allowing bullets to go though this "hole in the water". The laser isn't actually the weapon, but at least, that means it was supposed to work (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
efficient submarine weaponary in the future is rather sonic based weapons I think, anyway ( think alien weapons in Xcom Terror from the deep).

A secret war between black ops teams from the Vasudans & Terrans on/around an aquatic research base? Not all battles are fought in space....
-
the sea quest has lasers (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
And they had some cool Fighter Subs. Take a few lessons from the designs on that show.

I'd be content to believe that FS2 ships all functioned underwater. Maybe give them slightly different thruster glows (distorted ones?) to accentuate the fact that some hardware had to be adapted and I think it should be fine. Weapons should probably have a decent rethink, though. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Well, Fs ships are vacumn sealed and have life support....
I'd replace thuster glows & flames with rotating sub-objetcs & scaled trails, and redo the (semi-transparent) thruster.ani to look like the beam off of a searchlight, for added atmosphere.

are you crazy? ut the space shuttle in water to see what happens... basically, it's designed to resist to a pression from inside to outside ( pressurized air inside, air or vacuuml outside ). so put it it deep water: "crunch".
ok, let's forget about that. Put your sapce shuttle in the water. Now, gentlemen, start your engines!
What? it doesn't work? comne, it's not because there's hundered of litres of water coming right into the engine they shouldn't star! Oh, it does? sorry sorry sorry
oh, and i'd like to see how an ursa would handle under water (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif). Aerodynmics not important in space, but hydraudynamics, it's another mater (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
Plus, in fact the most important: I want to pilot submarines, not submarine herc2!!!
-
Venom, the FS2 underwater ships probably had some modifications done to them to get them to work. Maybe a turbine instead of fusion drive. And they can withstand the pressure of water, since anything that can take a direct hit from a 14 kt bomb and keep flying should have no problem with water pressure.
And some of the ships were aerodynamic. Not the ursa, but definately the pegasus.

put a small bomb outside of one of those US submarines. it will do crap. put it inside...
And do you really think they would use a spaceship as submarine?
If people want to do that, it's just a cheap way to make a false campaign.
My point.

Rember, this is not based off of FS/2, anyway about those fishies idea, Im thinkingov making asteroides that you cant collide into and make them look like little floating fishies (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

If you are going to make some huge submarines and have submarine battles, make sure they have something like Sea Quest: Interceptors. Or else submarine warfare will start and end real fast.

something like archimedean dynasty or subwar 2050 is the best way to go IMHO (btw, the sequel to AD is due for soon I think).
