Title: How do I save Snipes?
Post by: Endomatic on September 13, 2006, 03:41:19 pm
How the hell do I find his ship in mission 25 or whatever?

I approach the first buoy, but nothing happens. How do I tell where it points to? If I go in ANY direction, I just get lost.

There's no blip that shows up (I read a FAQ that says this is supposed to happen) that leads me to the next point. I stop RIGHT next to the buoy, and all I see on radar is the 3 ships in my squad and the buoy beside me. Nothing else. So how the hell do I tell where to go?

You ought to see sort of greyish distortions in the radar. Head towards those. If they do not appear fly short distance away from the 1st buoy (IIRC nearly towards your original heading). The distortions caused by the next buoy ought to start appearing quite soon after passing the 'current' buoy.

Do they buoys point anywhere? Are they actually useful at all? It doesn't seem like it. Can I skip this mission? It's the stupidest mission in any game ever created.

Fly towards the first buy..keep hte big ligh-grey dot in the center of your radar. Once you flown past it it should move itself near the back of your radar, but a dark grey dot should appear ner the radar center. Follow that dot

rinse and repeat.

P.S. - a nice little tip - stop 100m (or closer - enough to see it visually, not only on the radar)  infront of each buy to kill off the shivan. Don't move from the spot, just rotate and shoot till you kill them. Once you killed them off locate the bouy again and continue.
That should help you to keep your barings...

I'm sorry to say you probably won't. In that mission Snipe's character shields are removed and fate determines it's his time to make way for Alpha 1...

This is one mission where, if you're using FSOpen, it might be a good idea to turn off 3-D Radar. This is one instance where the original 2-D radar is more readable.

Rumor has it, if you just fly straight the whole mission ignoring the shivans that you pass by, you'll run straight into the Grall.

Exactly what I was going to suggest.  The 3-D radar is great normally.  However, in places where it's hard to get a good radar lock, like in Asteroid fields, in the Nebula, especially this part of the Nebula, the 2-D radar is the way to go.

I find it easier. :nervous:

What I did was just go for the sporadic blips in that mission. First time I played i got all turned around, got frustrated, and quit. :D

Yeah, that mission was more frustruating than Bearbaiting (which is rather hard to do).

Agreed.

But the rumor is true. If you just keep flying in a straight line from the start, you will find Snipes. Now defending his transport in that mess is a whole 'nother story.

Open it in fred, You'll see a slight curve to the path.

But is it enough curve to deter you from triggering the event of Snipes' transmission and picking up the Grall on your radar?

I'm currently testing my FS2 prowess by completing the entire campaign on Insane mode...

So far, I'm on the Gamma Draconis mission... the destroyer and corvette jumped in, and the cain is in there now too... it is rather hard to do =P

I found that mission quite easy, but the only other thing i had trouble with was getting the freighters at the start and getting the bonus objectives. :D

(damn this word filter, i can't understand what i'm saying. XD)

That always takes me a couple of tries on insane. It's pretty easy if you make a run for where the Sobek jumps in, but if you want that Cain kill you need to take out it's weapons pretty quick and order one of your wings to defend you, and of course you'll probably die anyway.

I'd have to say King's Gambit I've never gotten through in insane... there's always that golden BB that does me in.

I'm still on that mission......

I'll go use the high-poly models and sit in the orion's fighterbay...

I usually get swamped one time or another... its hard to fight off 4 Mara with a Subach and Ahketon SDG, loaded with 25 rockeyes (surprizing good against the Rakshasa's fighterbeams, fast to fire, fast moving, and long range) and 80 hornets. I usually try to get some off me with the rockeyes in singlefire mode. Its hard to beat the mission... the Maras outnumber friendlies about 4-to-1 at times, if not more. The final fighter jumpin is the deadly one... you have to engage them because if you don't, they will all get on your tail with shivan swarms... a mix of luck and skill while flying an unmaneuverable heavy fighter... Its just like trying to take out Ulysses while in the original Herc... hard when theyre flying circles around you (literally).

But anyways, the bombers have to be taken out or the Orion will be destroyed... as you all know, Orions die against heavy bombers... when there are no AAAf beams on the sides, only on the top. You have to lean over the edge and fire about 2 salvos of doublefire against the dang bombers...

Insane is... well, insane. You die about three times on average, per mission. It will make you rethink Insane mode quickly...

I tested this the other day. If you just fly in a straight line from the start point, you won't hit the Grall exactly, but you will get close enough to trigger the events.

Whats the big deal w/ nav buoys? Just fly strait, wait a lil, and let your wingmen kill shivans...

someone should find out the exact distance between start and the transport, and see how hard or easy it is to get like 1km from the transport, get ur wings after you, then go in guns blazing

Lilith-class Cain?

Anyway, it is much better to get the Allied Defense Citation than killing a Cain, which you can do in many other missions in the campaign.

It says it's a Cain, but apparantly, it's actually a Lilith.  Not only does it have a Lilith textures in SCP, but you can tell by how long it takes both an Orion and a Sobek to kill it.

Pfft...nav bouy's. We don't need no stinking bouy's.

I prefer charging straight ahead in an EMP storm.

No, in a default mission it is definitely a Cain.

The Orion has had the BGreen removed, which is why it takes so long to take out a Cain

There, better encode, focus is solely to get to the Grall, just look at the radar and the gray dots basically.

If you still can't finish it after watching this video, god have mercy on your soul.

Something I found by accident about this mission is that if you turn up the time compression to about 4 or 8 then you no longer have any annoying EMP's  :p.  However fighting in this way may prove difficuly beyond medium difficulty.

Yeah, the quality couldn't suck because you needed to see the dots on the radar.

...and also it could be that I was too lazy to **** around with different types of codec's.

At any rate, if you can't download 100 megabytes, I pity you.

I can in 4 minutes flat at work, But i cant be doing with it snooping round cos of my dept using 8 times more bandwith than the rest of the floor. The typical transfer size is about 4 meg for a layered doc with interlaced images. If i DL a hundred meg video. They'll see a spike and kick my ass  :D
