When rendering an object and putting it into a scene(ie: photograph) is there any way to accurately cast shadows of the object onto things that are in the scene, and if so, was the best/easiest method? Similarly, what's the best way to have parts of the scene reflect in/on the 3D object?
An example of this would be taking a picture of my house and then put a 3d model of a car/spaceship/washingmachine in the driveway. How would I make so that the car casts an accurate shadow?

by making a plane below the model itself, and doing approximations of its sorroundings so it gets proper shadowing. as for reflections and stuff, it gets more complicated, you could use various HDR's.... but, you could also use the picture into which you're compositing into. you create a box that encompasses your entire object, and put the said picture on it via cubic/UV mapping.
thats in short. if you need more accurate help, state your software, your experience in said software and such.
