I've had the original FS demo for year and I only recently obtained a copy of FS2. I got fs2_open to work and I have most of the standard MediaVPs installed, but I'm still not getting the same graphical results that I see in so many screenshots. I got Lightspeed's thruster effects installed and explosion upgrades and shinemaps (but I still cant tell if the explosions or shinemaps are working), but I believe that there are other upgrades out there. Can anyone direct me to other upgrades?

Welcome to the HLP. Keep all your fingers and toes inside the installation at all times! Exits are located near the "rear" of the station, however, due to the fact that the airlocks are broken... well let's just say we're not going anywhere . Flamethrowers are located beneath seats, but due to the stupid 1984 governments, GodTM, the extent of freedom of speech, ect. the napalm has been replaced with holy-water. Plasma rifles and shotguns are located in the weapons lockers, however, only the admins, :v:, and the hyperintellegent shade of blue have keys. At no point should you combine the symbols F S and 3, as you will be drowned in holy-water. If you should meet a Shivan in the air ducts, give him your lunch and back away slowly. Strawmen may be constructed at any time in the galley.
If you have any further questions go to Karajorma's Freespace FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html)
Checklist for Freespace 2 Open on Windows:
- The Zeta Media VPs, available here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html)
- A 3.6.9 RC, or CVS build like this one (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,41891.0.html)
- The mp-710 patches, get both files here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_models.rar) and here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_effects.rar) and if you use the advanced effects VP, here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavp/mp-710_adveffects.rar)
- For the sake of convenience the newest launcher (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/Launcher.rar)
Also, make sure you have the following:
- Recent OpenAL release, available here (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/OpenALwEAX.exe)
- An okay graphics card, available at your local computer store, also available at Newegg (http://www.newegg.com)

The most important thing to do is to open the Launcher and check the features tab to see if you have actually turned on specular lighting etc.
Next tell us where you got FS2_Open and the media VPs from. I suspect you're running 3.6.7 Official. Most people are now using 3.6.9 RC 7 in preperation for the Official release of 3.6.9 and thus have much better graphics than people still using the official builds.
One of the major omissions people make is to not add -ambient_factor 75 to the custom flags section of the launcher. This tones down the ambient lighting. Feel free to fiddle with the number to your hearts content. Most people like a number somewhere between 65-85.

Looks like Im out of date....Im running 3.6.7 stable release and it's mediaVPs.
I'll try to reinstall.

Target locked..............FIRE ON SAM !!!!!!!!!!!
:welcome:
Welcome to the HLP Station, All references to FS and the number 3 must be removed from your person to prevent accidental :snipe:. Do not feed the redident Shivan Carl as he will become voracious and chew your leg off. Flamethrowers can be found under your seat but due to financial constraints have been re-filled with holy water, Phased Plasma rifles (40 watt range of course) can be found in storage lockers. To prevent act of n00b however, These can only be opened by Moderators, :v: or a hyperintelligent shade of BluE. In the event of catastrophioc hull failure please board the nearest lifeboat which is pre-programmed for autonymous flight to our sister station the Game-Warden outpost.

My first post also, but i was just wondering what the mp-710 patches were for?
I've got the full install from the freespace 2 download links thread. Am I set?

Basically they patch the Zeta media VPs.
Without them you get black boxes around many of the textures used by the game.
If you've upgraded to the latest version of the full download (1.9c I believe) then you're all set.

ok I launch 3.6.9-RC7 and it complains that it can't understand my video card and Open GL then it asks if I would like to use the launcher but the link is bad for the launcher, I have the launcher on my desktop so what feature am I searching for with the launcher to resolve this issue?

Grab this 3.6.9 RC7 (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/rc7dot8.rar) from Taylor (it's RC7.8, it's a bit updated RC7 specially for multiplayer stuff). The rar file has the latest version of launcher (v 5.5).
Put the launcher in the same folder as exe (although you can put a direct link in desktop if you want). Run the launcher and:
- In welcome be sure you've select the 3.6.9. RC7.8 exe
- In MOD select mediavps (PLEASE READ Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html) about mediavps and mod installation).
- In audio/joystick select Generic Software under OpenAL sound device (You have to install Open AL drivers or whatever first).
- In Video select NEARLY ALWAYS OpenGL, NEARLY NEVER DirectX. For resolution 1028x768 is usually fine with 32 bits. Select trilinear filtering and 16x Anisotropic Filter if your GPU is good enough.
- Press run.

What ARSPR said, but with this build (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/rc7dot9.rar) instead (RC 7.9, just released this morning).

Make sure to download the updated RC7dot9. It should fix AI issues in the original release :)
