Title: Need some feedback (Medusas)
Post by: Singh on September 19, 2006, 11:16:34 am
Got to renderin' again to practise my lighting/color a wee bit. In any case, some medusas in an asteroid field. Ive got three versions of the image in various color combinations; some feedback on which version you like best would be really appreciated, since I'll be showing that one to my lighting lecturer in college later on. As always, credits to Freespace and Volition for the models, and whomever did the HTL Medusa and released it, along with the hi-poly 'roids. Lighting, scene setup and conversions done by me. :)

Green is too bright, red is too dark, mix is just right.

It'll be my next desktop when I get tired of the current one. (http://downloads.studiotrophis.com/WC-Desktop.jpg)

Thanks. I kinda liked the mix best myself, and decided to work on it a bit more. The latest result is below.

Oh, and no replies? Does it suck that bad? :(

It doesn't suck at all.  It's just that no one used to FS renders any more (hint hint, make MORE).

I don't know about the redo.  The increased nebula is interesting, but I prefer black space myself.  Less would be more.  You changed the lighting on the bombers making the lead one greener than it needs to be.  I would scale it back a bit.  Of course, it might be because of the brighter background.

It is otherwise so good-looking that the HTL models start looking low-poly. ::)

...if the slight softness of the image is not intentional, that is.

Here's what I would do:

-almost completely dark sky would float my boat better - just a bit of nebulae colour here and there; not too much. I much prefer dark space bakcgrounds myself.

- put more contrast to objects lightened by local light sources. Almost completely black shadow sides FTW (IMO). And if you want to have ambient light illuminating the shadow sides of the objects, please make that light the same tone that the background average value is - ie. if you have that much red nebulae, the ambient should be red.

My comment is physically oriented; I'm a realism whore, what can you do. Aesthetically, I would also perhaps group the Medusae a little differently, but that's your choice obviously. I would put them first in classic FS diamond formation, then alter the directions of them a little bit (if, for example, one of them needed to evade an asteroid) and shake the formation a bit loose. Now, it looks a bit too loose formation to me; it would be better suired if they were fighters or assault fighters instead of bombers. Bombers should give an impression of steady progress to target, while fighters could be expected to maneuver more like the Medusae in the render.

The amount of asteroids could also be either reduced, OR alternatively alter the background to give impression of being inside a gas giant's rim or something like that... because that's the only place in space that can be even scarcely imagined to be that dense in amount of stones.

It doesn't suck. :D

And, as is obvious, these are my opinions of these pictures as just pictures. I don't know anything about rendering as a technique to make pictures.

Begging works.

Well, I'm seeing this on a CRT monitor, which is dark anyway, but I would say you need to bring up the contrast a little bit, you actually have to look quite closely to make out 2 of the ships. Maybe you need something high contrast in the background, like a planet, or a dense patch of stars that will sillhouette the other Medusas?

Thats the best of all four IMO, could use a bit of contrast but i'm no expert........ :)

Looks great :D The problem with the medusas is they don't seem to have any specular on them :) That might make the image have some contrast. Maybe try making the shadows really dark and the lights really bright as well?
