Check this (//"http://www.theproduct.de/").
Unbelievable, as one person said, it's 'code poetry'.
-
That is what game producers should be doing, none of this 1.2 gig install stuff, get computers to render the textures themselves - this is incredible!
-
WOW!

That is trippy...
-
damn, that's an impressive 3D engine and 3D generator. The demomakers have always been the pinacle of coding skills. mmh... It's reminds me of Into the shadows... That game was announced 4 years before tomb raider, and actually looked better. Too bad it was concelled. It was being made by demomakers, of course.
Oh, and I'm so glad the party still exists after all those years (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

That thing is on the same level as the Mad Onion demos, except better, 'cause they made the engine themselves...

and it's a lot smaller (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'm downloading DirectX 8, I haven't needed it so I guess I should do it now.
-
Schoveet.

Actually, to give a rebuttal to all you people who are praising the 3D engine in te Product, it isn't all that great - at least, it isn't as long as you ignore the filesize. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
The amazing thing about it is definetly the texture generation - very sweet, and very efficient.

Yeah man, it's not that this is superultrabetter than anything, but it's a 64k demo! That's the best thing about it. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

What would FreeSpace look like with that engine........hmmmmm

Not very good.
"We need that dark, grim-looking cathedral thing DOWN, pilots!"
"AAAGH! These little squares of light are all over me!"
...you get the idea. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

wow! what a cool idea coded textures! why hasn't anyone thought of this yet?!
to tell the truth, i had. but i never thought it would actually work. Kudos to them!!

Why don't you join them then? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

that would not make modding easy, isn't it?

Compression ratio................
-
I cant watch it on this machine but i assume they are using procedural textures, which have been around for almost 25 years now.
It has been done before (on the demo scene) -the unreal engine uses procedurals to a degree but most people find them too computationally expensive to make a game out of.

Oh yeah, this thing...
Mayhap I sould send this Relic's way..
Homeworld 2 could be rather large...
-
If ever it comes.
-
It'd better come - I loved Homeworld but it's looking dated now.

I thought i was doing good at under 20 megs for the whole thing.
Nice.
Procedurally generated textures is something that gets done now and again.
Look it up on www.gamasutra.com ("http://www.gamasutra.com")
-
procedurals are not effective for high definition virtual environments.
when you add in overheads like AI, network code, terrain generation it all gets very slow.
maybe when everyone is running hammer64s and IA-64 processors at 3ghz, maybe. but not yet.
also procedurals are damned hard to get looking good. That shivan destroyer im working on took a while to get to that point with the textures.
As far as game design goes they're a nightmare because you cant easily control exactly where they will appear on your geometry.
nuff said.

have you ANY idea of how much trouble you're in?
assault on a police officer.
Theft of police property.
Illegal possesion of a firearm.
FIVE counts of attempted murder.
That comes to...
twenty-nine dollars and 14 cents.
cash, cheque or credit card?

Yeah, you're right. But it's just cool to marvel at, that's all. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
