Another NFS Sequel. Ridge Racing, more customizing, and apparently you can warp the shape of car parts. sweetness.
I really want this one!
http://pc.ign.com/objects/837/837025.html
-
i'll steal it, because none of them are worth buying anymore.
-
Oh snap.
-
i'm also stealing jackass 2, just to prevent my suitemates from paying money to see it. those people do not deserve money.
-
I might get this. I had a lot of fun with NFS:MW. It looks like they still have that annoying motion blur in the screenshots though. They should make it easier to disable that.
-
Bangwal
When will it end... I just wish I could make my own racing game. :sigh:
Yeah I hated the motion blur. Lagged my system; I had to use a hack tool to switch it off. :blah:
-
It ran okay for me, but you could hardly see anything when going at a decent speed. It might look okay if they tone it down (a lot).
-
Custom Car gams FTW,
Auto Modellista was my fave PS2 racing game and you had so many options it made me smile every time i made a car. :D
-
Well it does have a degree of realism, the motion blur, cause if you've ever rode or been lucky enough to drive a car that can top 200mph, your vision will become slightly distorted once you hit about 180. It depends on the person, but people who haven't been conditioned to that kind of visual stress will probabably start seeing everything as a blur at that speed.
-
The blur is key to that "sense of speed" :)

This game isn't exactly realistic anyway. :D I just found it impossible to see the civilian cars on the highways with it turned on. It may look better if it's toned down.

MW doesn't have that great a sense of speed (and the way the gameplay and track layouts are designed, you rarely want to be going very fast in any case). For that you need to play Ballistics. :D
-
honestly, how fast do the guys at EA work!?!?! :sigh:
-
the same speed as everyone else. EA just makes them release their products before theyre properly finished.
-
I dunno, I liked the PS1 games, personally, NFS: High Stakes was my fav....
-
you rarely want to be going very fast in any case
Says you ;)
-
It looks very samey... I just wish there was a greater selection of cars and music. If they pushed it slightly in the direction of GT4 then there'd be massive depth - there just isn't right now.
-
Heh, I solve the music problem by playing my iPod through the Xbox, it replaces any ingame music with my own playlists :)
-
playing an ipod through an xbox? thats like having coldplay at a rap concert. for some reason, i cant imagine that working properly.

DUDE! IBOX! (http://www.uk.playright.dk/raretitel.php?id=14335)
-
Maybe I'll just wait for the arcade simulator to come out... :sigh:

It works flawlessly. And, it plays it thru the USB link, so its doing a real digital feed, rather than the analog feed most iPode stereo integrations work with.
There's a free AAC compatibility plugin on XBL Marketplace as well, though all my iPod music is MP3.
Its an amazing integration.

I realise my earlier post looks kinda negative, but I'm going to go and be a bit more positive about NFS:C now.
I just read an interview with the game producers and it turns out that my personal hate of NFS:MW - catchup - has been significantly reduced in favour of real-world performance of cars. No longer will you be overtaken by a car that was miles behind you and couldn't possibly match your car. Gone are the days of the Pug 205 overtaking a DB9 on a straight. They're angling back towards proper performance values and that means a lot to me as I was continually frustrated by the above.
I'm looking forward to this now.
-
Demo is up on XBLM. It's a bit crap IMHO.
-
That makes me sad, I'll downlaod it tonight and look.
-
Isn't that the XBox360 demo though, not the PC varient?
-
I wouldn't expect the PC version to be much different knowing EA...
The Cliff races are a ton of fun, but the rest is pretty meh. The worst part is the framerate. The game looks no better than NFS:MW but chugs like an alchoholic. I would certainly hope for more after the likes of PGR3 and even RR6. This is just pathetic on EA's part IMHO.
-
It might not be much different, but I'd at least be happier seeing how it ran on my system than on a console variation, you know? :)
Any idea what's causing the frame rate problems? A lot of people have real issues with the motion blur they seem to like plastering on in more-than-healthy doses. I usually turn that off as soon as there's a program or setting out there that can do it.
-
Its a little prettier than MW, more variety in colour, the night time neon is back, whether its back for the whole game is another question.
The straight up racing is more of the same, I am ok with that, and the addition of your "crew" to help you win the race is interesting, we'll see how that pans out in the full game, having them qall drive the same car is a bit goofy....
The car visual customization is kinda neat, autosculpt could be alot of fun to create unique rides out on Xbox Live.
Drift racing is back, but it seemed to kinda suck. They also brought back the exotics (Gallardo, etc) so its not just a tuner game (I know MW did this too).
I dunno, I kinda liked the demo.
-
I enjoy almost all of the Need for Speed franchise. However, there's only one MAJOR problem with NFS:
Damage Modeling.
Honestly, if you run into a wall at 150 mph, your car wouldn't be able to be towed to the finish line. And, you'd be dead.
That said, video games aren't always about realism, but still, your car only loses a bit of torque and a bit of speed when you constantly hit the walls at 150. What's up with that?
Other than that quarrel, the NFS series is fun with it's kinda lame storylines, but excellent edge-of-your-seat racing....
-
You mean you want a damaged looking model or a damaged handling model? Or both?
-
both, plus cars that actually move like they're damaged (not serverely though, that'd be ridiculous)
-
The game would be extremely hard/impossible to beat if damage models and effects were realistic. The whole point of Most Wanted is that everyone else sans the cars you're racing against is more or less realistically destructable. It's what allows you to flip over and destroy 50 police cars in one milestone setting. The police would **** you in the ass past condition three if the damage to you was equal to how they are damaged.
Nonsense.
-
I like Burnout 3's method. Doors, hoods, etc fall off, lots of eye candy damage, explosions, and breakage... but you're still able to drive, lol. Not realistic by any means, but quite enjoyable and fun.
-
Gents, the main reason there are no damage dynamics is that the Brand owners would never allow unrealistic representations of damage made to their cars; Either in showing a car being weaker than it really is or stronger than it could possibly be. No damage at all is the only solution.
-
The most recent NFS game I played (although, if I'm getting it right, I played the PC version):
Probably will be the last one too :p

Actually, they don't want severe damage at all, even if it is realistic. Which is why Forza 2 won't have wheels popping off unfortunately.
-
Kind of sad really... shows a sort of paranoia that indicates they think people can't tell the difference between real life and computer game worlds.
If I drive a Lambo in a game and pile it into a wall at 200mph then of course the car is going to be ruined. That's not bad advertising for Lambo, it's common sense.
-
actually, I'll have to side with Kalfireth. The physics on NFS are rather stupid. I have High Stakes for PS1, and when you hit a police interceptor, your car flips in the air? I don't think so. if you hit one of those, your car is going to flip through the air, total the interceptor, and kill you in the process. At the very least they should end the race right there. Or make the physics enough to where you hit an interceptor going 60 mph while you're doing 120 mph, the cars should bounce off of each other and hit walls and all kinds of things ... rather annoying that the physics is wrong.
There is one cure for this. A cheat code. On the PS1 version, hold down d-pad up, square, and circle, and your car becomes heavier. The physics are more realistic that way....
-
All this talk about damage reminds me of a particular racing game that has utterly no damage model or code at all... but I don't mind having no damage, because these days, everyone plays rough. With possibly good reason, due to the way catch up works in that game... hitting and blocking becomes a necessity. ><
For me, I'll either have no damage, or visual damage at the most. No actual coded damage... sometimes it's just fun when someone sends you flying sky-high into the air, only to see you catch him off-guard and steal his victory at the finish line... XD
Obviously real life is a different story with real damage, so I'll go to games if I want fun without the dangers XD
-
But if you had damage it'd add a whole new dimension to gameplay - having to have your car towed if you really badly crash it. Having to get the parts in and get mechanics to look at it etc. Or you could go the way of Carmageddon and say your car loses performance if you crash - but you can fix it mid-race by pressing a key.
-
That's true, but I think it'll be harder to win if there was damage, especially when one goes against the pros who do have tactics in cripping the rival and ending all chances of winning (they don't just play rough with skills/tactics, they can run really fast in timed laps too).
It's an arcade game btw... and nowadays, it's already very difficult to win if one doesn't play rough at all (Not impossible, just very difficult). With damage, methinks the newbies (as well as the more experienced players who still play "fair" to a certain extent) will just get cheesed off... To compensate for some of the cars being too weak (as well as some of the really brutal attacks that sends the opponent airborne), there was a patch that made the cars behind catch up really fast... and then players had to train their blocking skills so that they wouldn't lose the pole position just because someone overtook them while being only 5-10 metres away from the goal.
Besides, there's always the occasional "fun game" where every race becomes a slam fest... LOL...
Well, just my opinions on it... :)

The demo is out!
That's right guys.. the PC demo is out. Check out the list of mirrors here: http://www.nfsunlimited.net/carbon/demo
Be warned that a lot of people are interested in this one, so the servers are fairly full. I'm getting mine from the EA FTP but a lot of people have complained about the speed there (I'm getting between 10 and 50kbps, estimated time is around 9 to 4 hours).
Anyways... get get 'em.
-
Wow, that took a while.
So yeah, to reiterate:
circuit racing: meh-cool
drift-racing: masochists unite!
canyon-racing: exciting premise, but too easy to stay on the road.
-
Yeah, got it and played through it.
Funny how I got INSTANT WIN the first time out, then I couldn't repeat it... (http://209.85.12.236/5024/118/emo/bangwall.gif)
Grrr, why are the muscle and exotic classes so annoying to use in the drift and canyon races... (http://209.85.12.236/5024/118/emo/bangwall.gif)
-
Sorry to bump but I just got hold of it myself.
A few things to note:
1. I like the intro to the storyline this time around. The tutorials for wingmen and the new/different features work very nicely. I didn't feel bored doing those and very quickly learnt how they all work.
2. The graphics are very nice, though I do wish they'd optimise them a bit more. They still feel somewhat jerky in high detail and I don't think they should.
3. Which leads me onto 3. The game crashes, just like it used to in Most Wanted. I got around this by dropping the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1024x768 but I really don't like having to do that. I know my system can run it at the higher resolution so why the game feels the need to crash to desktop is beyond me. I gather other people are experiencing the same thing... EA should know better by now?
4. Overall I think it's a nice addition, but they seem to be holding off from going "all the way". There's no good reason not to have full day and night cycles and so on. Also it'd be nice to see some more obvious additions like in-game MP3 support (rather than having to run Winamp in the background).
-
Carbon was the easiest NFS game ever, the last NFS game I actually finished before getting bored was Hot Pursuit (NFS3). I never finished Undergrounds or Most Wanted because they just had silly amount of races, so I got bored before the final races.
Carbon favors tuning class rides though, I first picked RX-8, then RX-7 and finally Skyline GT-R (all tunings) and with Skyline I overtook the last boss with ease. :p
Looks like EA learned the lesson from Most Wanted and kept the number of required races humane this time. Decent game and the canyon races were a nice touch, still overall an average game.
-
It's a short, easy game.
I started out using exotics, but when tier 3 became available I got myself a lancer. hardly surprising if you knew me - in racing games where there's a lan-evo available, I drive it. It runs circles against the opponents in the last (4 races in a row) battle.
now, I could go back and finish the few races I skipped (can only stand so much drifting in one session), and the challenge series, but that sure ain't gonna happen.
-
MMm, I'm already 10% in and I only got the game yesterday. Not enough races perhaps?
Oh, and drifting is a piece of piss. It's so rediculously easy I don't even know where to start.
-

:wtf:
Odd. I think it's hard to drift in the exotic or the muscle cars. Or maybe that's because the cars lack power in the demo (I'm not buying the full game until I can upgrade this sad old comp, unless EA rushes NFS Island out the door before then).
Though I have one question to those who cleared the game: Is the Koenigsegg available in the "regular" version of the game, or is it a Collector's Edition-only car?
Crap, now I wish I had some cash; head over to the arcade and play some Maximum Tune. Authentic JDM cars for the win! :) ;) :D
-
I found that NOS makes a huge difference in drifting. If you find you're getting a bit slow or too close to a corner then NOS will save you. I'm not sure what constitutes a "good" score on a drift race but I think my highest was over 200,000 points in a Lotus Elise. That said, tuning and parts do make a big difference to your car so perhaps that's why you're having trouble - the demo really is stripped down.
Also, the Koenigsegg is collectors-edition only. I imagine someone, somewhere will put it up for download though (not that I encourage such things, but I'm frankly irritated at EA producing a collectors edition at the same time as the regular version with a few more features that they could've been nice and put into the regular version, but chose to squeeze some cash out of people instead).
-
Drifting annoys the heck out of me on Underground, Does Carbon still have the best mode, Drag?
-

Yup, my friend who knows squat about EA's current policies screwed himself by purchasing the standard edition. Probably doesn't matter much to him though, since he's not an enthusiast like I am... plus he still factors in the extra cost of the CE over the regular edition (which is a valid point that I agree with). I wouldn't even think twice - I'd get the CE straight away.
I ended up ranting and cursing and swearing and whatnot (not at him though) half the time in an MSN conversation with him... Of all cars, the Koenigsegg... (http://209.85.12.236/5024/118/emo/bangwall.gif) :sigh:
As for nitrous, no argument there. It does help in drifting, but again, the demo's nitrous shots were too short. It did save me on a few occasions though. :) Maybe they should've reused UG1/UG2's drift physics or something, I heard those were more realistic? But you couldn't use any nitrous in UG drift events... At least I think so.
-
Err.
What's so hard about drifting?
They've made it REALLY easy to win.
Just..... make sure you're in a proper car, that you're exiting the corners with as much speed as possible, and that you're close to a wall when you drift. You should also attempt to chain them, which is easily possible seeing how the tracks were made for it.
I won them with huge point differences every time.
-
Drifting annoys the heck out of me on Underground, Does Carbon still have the best mode, Drag?
Drag is out of the picture in Carbon, and I like it that way as I never liked drags.
-
Drifting annoys the heck out of me on Underground, Does Carbon still have the best mode, Drag?
as said before, it's not. and the muscle cars would pwn there, mostly, since there's not much turning involved. what always annoyed me about drag was that it was never a proper quarter mile.
they remade drift for carbon, too. it's a bit better now, tbh. I just get frustrated since I always hit the damn walls when I shouldn't (like when I've got the multiplier to 15 and would rake in a couple of hundred thousand points if I hadn't hit a wall). I set my cars for drífting in normal races, and of course that means there's no grip what so ever on drift courses.
-
Trouble is I don't think the main courses were really made for drift. There's a good number of switch-back turns but there are also plenty of long straights and shallow corners that you want the car to really hug the road for.
-
I thought UG's drift physics was better, especially UG2's.
No way can you drift an E8 GSR right in Career mode without setting up the suspension first... Some realism for the win... O_o
Might be just me though. But I'm surprised that Carbon has no drag. Makes me feel bad for the muscle cars, even though I'm not a fan of them myself.
-

meh. I named the profile "Takumi", so he ought to drift.
-

Oh yeah, I've been re-watching Initial D lately. Only 12 episodes from 4th stage left. Damn, it takes way too long for 5th stage to air. :( Still, I wish Takumi would lose to something else than engine blow and to Impreza driven by his dad for a chance.
-
Some people who I know, and were once strong ID supporters have since stopped watching the series, and cut the number of times they went out to play Arcade Stage (they just play to keep their skills in check).
They all claim the series is too long and some even complained that Takumi is just too uber. He really does need to lose a bit more for realism's sake. I'm not surprised that Wangan Midnight's regaining its popularity after over a decade of obscurity... but IMO the arcade games mostly played a role in that series' reprise... most of the ID players moved on to the Maximum Tune arcade games, seeking something different from ID I guess... :nervous:
I just hope WM doesn't follow the same fate as ID when it comes to series length. WM has a fair chance of following the same fate (i.e. too long)...
4th stage is already done with over here. No clue as to when the next stage is coming out, but I've lost track. I boycotted the series after reading the 14th volume of the translated comic books anyway... :nervous:
-
The series is otherwise good but Takumi, and now Project D are just too good, or über as you put it.
-
me, I don't really care about that stuff, tbh. nicely directed racing scenes + eurobeat, however. and damn those cliffhangers! first time through I ended up watching the three first stages almost without breaks.
-
One of the things I didn't like about ID was the eurobeat soundtrack. I guess I'm more pro-Maximum Tune, which uses techno/trance tracks.
Really. A few years ago, when I was still an Arcade Stage player, all my game cards had the music turned off in the options menu. The only song I like in the entire ID series... is Gamble Rumble. And it wasn't in Version 2 or 3... I started from Arcade Stage version 2. :nervous:
:sigh:, I've got to stop going off-topic... but frankly, I'm cheesed off with the way EA does their games nowadays. $50 just doesn't buy a long-lasting and enjoyable game like it used to... :sigh:
sorry... (http://209.85.12.236/5024/118/emo/bangwall.gif) :shaking: :(
-
I like the ID eurobeat music. :p
-
So whats hte final verdict on this, I haven't QUITE finished MW yet, and while Test Drive still does most of what I want in a driving game, I am pretty sure I will start feeling the itch for some good cop chases.
-
It's more of the same. A bit prettier and they've sorted out the annoying rubber-banding whereby the AI could completely obliterate you even if you were a good driver in a superior car.
That said it's prone to crashes for some people (myself included) - so be warned of that.
I suppose it comes down to "if you've money to spare then it's good fun, especially if you enjoyed MW".
-
Cops in Carbon does not have a big role unlike in MW, in fact cops in Carbon are in easymode unless you get your heat to level 5 at which point they roll Corvettes up your arse. The first time through I did not get arrested even once and my heat was at level 4 at best. Second time through I used one car longer and got arrested twice or so because of Corvettes. What's funny, at least once I've evaded cops while one of my front tires was busted by a spike strip.
-

<--console player here
Its on my Amazon wish list, I suppose I will just wait and see if anyone gets it for me next month.

I had all four tires bust and still evaded at heat level 4.

Heh, sorry to bump an older thread, but I got this the other day. It's not actually a bad a game, but I think Drift is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. Personally, I just don't get on with it.
I think you'll find those that have the biggest problem are those whose idea of going round a corner is to use the wall to bounce off of, done that a few times myself, you can actually get round some corners faster by using traffic or walls to bounce.
The thing that annoys me about drifting is that when I finished with 30K points, my opponent finished with 48K points, when I finished with 64K points, my opponent finished with 70K points. That annoyed me just a bit. Still the other race type are great fun, and theres nothing like racing a Silver Aston Martin with a big Union Jack vinyl on the hood ;)
-
I just got NFS:UG2, looking for something to use with my new force feedback stick.
Now, this game is a few years old. But with my new machine (Athlon 64 x2 3800+, Radeon x700, 2GB RAM) I can't get the graphics anywhere NEAR highest quality settings. WTF? Is this normal, or were they that far ahead of their time? Or is the Radeon x700 a dog?
-
Borrowed it off a friend.
Looking at some areas of the game, it was obviously rushed... the Undercover Corvettes don't appear to be used at all, but they're in the game. Not to mention that Cross' Corvette in a x5 pursuit is EXACTLY the same as the one in MW (if you can get close enough to him)... still the regular C6 without the rear over fenders, and with "RPD" instead of "PPD". The Cross Z06 that you get through the reward card is just the regular Z06, but with a special vinyl on it, and it's nowhere to be seen in any pursuit level. :wtf:
Then there's the baaaad clipping issue with spoilers (whose pylons are more uniform compared to the previous game) when you have an aero kit on the Carrera GT. At least the missing left air vent behind the door on Body 2 was fixed. Carrera GT isn't my favourite car anymore, now it's the Murciélago. Not forgetting the 997-gen 911 Turbo that was locked by mistake...
I don't like the drift (physics is unpredictable), and MW's pursuit is much harder in my opinion. NFSC doesn't have the helicopter. I've never been able to escape a pursuit with borked tyres before (I usually play at max heat), so I'm more interested in beating the crap out of Cross. I also don't like playing Canyon duels on Hard - I can never seem to win... ::)
Don't know if I can live with the vehicle tiers or not. I still believe that, if you have the financial backing, you can tune up a weaker car high enough to defeat something better. Like how a properly-tuned R32 GT-R can defeat a McLaren F1 at Tsukuba Circuit... :wtf:
Just my comments on NFSC. :) I hope no-one minds me posting this... :nervous:
