I did a search on this, and nothing turned up. I'm working on an FS1 campaign (no mods, just pure FS 1.06) and want to know if anyone would bother to play it or if I'm just wasting my time.
-
Yah. I play it occasionally. :)
-
option 3 for me, although now I have NO idea where I put them CD's... Mine was a cheap bundle pack actually.
If only the FSPort used the classic ending to the FS1 campaign. IMO the... "impact"... was better, at one time I actually got nightmares after constantly seeing the Luci getting stuck halfway during the jump and then detonating...
-
Have it, don't play it :)
-
Same as above.
-
I play it for nostalgia ;)
-
have it. would play if i had time. love the game.
-
I play the FSPort from beginning to end then Freespace 2, rinse and repeat. :shaking:
I can't get enough.
-
Occasionally, it's fun to enjoy not getting torn up by beams.
-
I have it, play it, and am developing a campaign for it... :nervous:

/me stands amidst a large blue swirling plume of dust.

So long as you have the FS1 movies in your Port mod folder, you'll still see the "classic" ending in its proper place, along with every other cutscene from the campaign. If you're referring to the bonus mission after "Good Luck," one of the main reasons for that being there is to allow said ending cutscene to be shown; due to a certain hard-coded function in the FS2 source, the only cutscenes you're able to play at the true end of a campaign are the FS2 ending movies. Plus, it makes for a cool flyable credits sequence. :)
To answer the original question, I still fire up a game of FS1 from time to time to play missions/campaigns that haven't been Ported. However, due to the 640x480 resolution, I'm always overwhelmed by TEH GREEN!!1 of the HUD whenever I first start to play. :p

Have it, play it about once a year for nostalgia and to keep my Voodoo2 in the old gaming rig busy.
I loved "Awakenings", so I would play a new FS1 campaign (if it's good that is)
-
I'm currently playing the port. If I had to play the original game, I'd surely suffer from eye cancer right now. :/
A resolution of 1280*1024 plus AA & AF makes even FS1 look good....despite the missing beams.

Well, don't forget you also have TEH BLUE!!1 and TEH AMBER!!1. ;)
-
I prefer it to FS2 and still play it more often

I remember first buying FreeSpace: The Great War at my neighborhood Costco because it bore the name "Descent." Back then, I was insanely attached to Descent. Never have shaken it off.
-
I've been playing it quite a bit, lately. Specifically, i've played 'First Strike' over three dozen times for... certain reasons. :nervous:
-
Why? That's the one where you capture the Taranis, right?
-
I never actually finished FS1 but have started replaying it with FS1 port and I'm almost at the end now. that's the only way I'll still play FS1.
-
The port != FS1. If you think it does, than you must think that volvo's and subaru's are the same because they end in vowels.
-
The port != FS1.
Well, the story's the same, so what?
-
LOL Don't worry, Hippos a die-hard FS1 fan ;) There's an atmosphere about FS1 that really is one of those 'you had to be there' type things ;)
I played FS1 once, I borrowed it from a friend, gawked at the Glide accelerated graphics, completed it and had to give it back. In fact, when I bought Freespace 2 a couple of years later, I thought it WAS Freespace 1, imagine my surprise when I saw the Bellesarius get lanced.

FreeSpace 1 is better than the Port. The nebula's looked stupid, but they gave you this really cool atmosphere... The FS2 nebulae were okay, but they were a bit too cartoony for my taste (the Subach HL-7 was also a bit funny, I mean, pink guns that turn blue?*). Some of the FS1 musiuc had really nice 'spooky' themes that were very effective during Pandora's Box. But I can't remember hearing Darkside or Monoliths for some reason. Which mission were they used in?
I like Ambient factor as well. It gives you a spooky feeling when playing something. My desktop is currently a picture that DaBrain (IIRC) posted of an EA Titus freighter... Super spooky. ;)
Anyway, back on the topic of FS1, I was making an FS1 campaign that was completely canonically wrong, as it has the Shivans returning in Altair and all this stuff that would never work in FS2's timeline. I gave up on it, as I did many other campaigns. ;)

LOL?! you dint see the cutscenes or briefing or command briefings, no nothing? XD!

I haven't played it in a quite a while, I'm sorry to say. :sigh: I still love that game, but I just haven't had any incentive to play it lately.
