Title: FS1-GeForce2 problems
Post by: Ace on December 12, 2001, 05:25:00 pm
Well after putting in a GeForce 2 card, guess what? Capital ships (Destroyer class) and Installations have the textures facing the player as you gain distance from the ship disappear.

This problem occurs with and without the D3D tweaks on, and I have the latest drivers.

Any clue?

That is sort of strange, since FS1 looks and plays great on my overclocked Geforce3. (which is quite similar to the GF2 in its core structure) From the nature of the problem though, it sounds like it may have comething to do with the antialiasing options. I have a strange problem in FS2 which causes the text the blurry in certain parts of the screen and seems to "cut" the image in certain places on the screen; forcing the video card to antialias all images seems to help. (although not alleviate the problem altogether) Try playing around with the AA settings in the video card control panel and see if that helps any; I'm not sure if that will do anything, but I guess it is worth a try. With all those sensors, you need a more powerful display card Setekh  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I'm getting a GeForce 2 with my new Pc tomoro.... looks like i may have to nick my bruv's Voodoo 3 as a backup (for Glide  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) )... he's getting my Voodoo 4, anyway.

It works fine on my GF2.

If your card has the option, try turning on DX5 emulation and see what happens.

LOL it isn't the Ti500 one - just a "plain vanilla" GF3 - but I got it to run significantly faster than the Ti500. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (250/575MHz, 25% overclock) The Voodoo3 3000 in the other computer is overclocked to the even higher percentage of 37%. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (227MHz)

Guess I'm just an overclocking nut, but those cases are much noisier than an average one with 10 or 11 fans per case... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Not sure where to find the options, I'm pretty sure DX5 emulation would be perfect if I could find it...

(checked control panels, checked program files, I can't find any programs or tools even after I managed to download all of the drivers from Nvidia...)

Heheh  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) Make no mistake, I would never get a GF3, no way - at least not while it's on the bleeding edge of technology. I will only under very select circumstances buy something that is new. This Kyro2 I'm proud of... I picked it up for less than $110, which is about a sixth the price of a comparable-performance GF2/GTS. So I'm happy with the buy.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Before I forget, Ace what ver of DirectX do you have?  If its 8.1, I'm going to slap you VERY hard.... (DX 8.1 is riddled with bugs...lots of D3D reliant games won't even run because of it.)

Really? that might explain a few things... how can you downgrade (and where can you get 8.0 from?)

I know, MD. Congrats to you too.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Tumbler: kill DX8.1, and then get DX8.0 off an old cover CD somewhere. It'll be there for at least a good month or two after the release of the newest version.

Gotcha - but how do you remove DirectX? I can't find a command for it anywhere...

Edit: I really should look before saying things like that.
www.directxbuster.de ("http://www.directxbuster.de")  has a comprehensive DX remover, seems to work as well  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

LOL I actually thought the purchase of my computer was quite a deal. $2500 for the following: 1400MHz Athlon TB, 512MB DDR RAM (266MHz), ASUS A7M266 motherboard (AMD-761), 75GB IBM 7200rpm ATA/100 HDD, 52X CD drive (Samsung), 16/10/40X CD-RW unit (Plextor), GF3 video card (which happens to overclock well too), SBLive X-Gamer soundcard, cooling: "Arctic Silver" thermal grease and ten fans (two Deltas), Koss R-200 headphones (got these instead of speakers), NEC/Mitsubishi Multisync 950+ monitor (21", 1920x1440), MS Intellimouse Explorer + standard MS keyboard, 3Com/USR hardware modem and ethernet card, and of course the good old 3.5" floppy drive. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

All of the components were retail rather than OEM, so I recieved the accompanying software too. (the SBLive included 3 very good games (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif))

So he should indeed hate me, because I know where to find the good deals and he does not! j/k (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (this one was from a small company called Hypersonic)

I have only had this machine for 4 months though and already it is somewhat outdated. Guess that's just life in the computer industry... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Dude, if I were you I'd try that out on a machine you don't care about first.  The last time I used that utility it screwed up windows so bad that I had to use a bootdisk just to recover my data and bomb the drive.

Heh, I'm just joking. But seriously, a GF3 is a lotta power, y'know?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
