And anyone know how to make beams w/o photoshop?
-
yes: either use two volumetric directional lights, either make a cylinder and apply a glow to it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
And theres probably loads of tutorials around on Google.com and so on...
-
Create a super spray Particle System.
Set the speed way up (150+).
The particle type i use is facing.
Make sure the particles doesn't grow or anything.
*Edit: you may want to play around with some of these settings too.*
Assign a Raytrace map to it.
Give it a material effects ID (say 1).
You may want to change Diffuse colour, luminosity and transparency.
Open Video-Post.
Add a scene event.
Add an image filter event -> choose lens effects glow.
Tweak. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Here's a quick one i made

Note: I use MAX 4

use the combustion environment effect with a sphere gizmo.
make sure the detail isnt too high
create an omni light and add a volume effect and set the attenuation parameters to the desired range.
create 6 spray particle systems and apply glow.
finally, use the particle array system to frag your object and use the visiblity track in trackview to make the origional geometry invisible.
voila.
a nice explosion with chunks.

have you ANY idea of how much trouble you're in?
assault on a police officer.
Theft of police property.
Illegal possesion of a firearm.
FIVE counts of attempted murder.
That comes to...
twenty-nine dollars and 14 cents.
cash, cheque or credit card?

man this shizat sounds easy in max

why 6 spray particles? why no just a single cloud one?

ermmm...
looks around,
There is a copy of that Illusion proggy floating about. Easy to make explosion with that particle ani proggy.
It saves alpha channels as well so easy to import as a background or foreground.

6 Spray systems will give you more control than the cloud system, which sucks (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
If you're after real volumic explosions, look at afterburn of pyrocluster but be prepared to spend alot of time away from your computer because they are very slow.
Almost all volumic renders are slow (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Ohh it is. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Even in old versions like R2.5.

Yeah, volumetrics can be nasty (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/redface.gif) But damn they look good if you do them right. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
-
Yeh.... shudder at raytraced pictures with lots of volumetrics.
-
actually, i think volumetric lights are set to ray tracing by default, you have no choice, that's why it's that slow (put a grid sphere around one, it looks sweet (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
They are set to whatever shadow algorythm the light uses.
Shadow maps work, but they're not much faster since by definition a volume effect is a voxel/raytrace entity.
Shadow maps are ugly.
Shadow maps give you cancer.
Shadow maps make your teeth fall out.
