I guess it goes to show: don't piss off the Motherland. The Georgians have my sympathy, if only for the fact that they are the clear underdogs in the Russia-Georgia dispute. With that said however, I predict that every Western media outlet will be crying "Stalin" (can anyone spot the irony?) within an hour, which is clearly absurd.

Whatever else Stalin may have been, he was a Russian nationalist of the first order...regardless of his birthplace.
Putin hasn't been handling this entirely fairly I think...

Georgians are the biggest pricks the area has seen in a milenia.
They were always in a more or less privilaged position in the Soviet Union - in other words, they had it pretty easy compared to their neighbours. Furthermore before Russian annexation, Georgia was forever the unlucky middleground that everyone conquered, but no one could hold.
The Russians did and brought peace to the region, the Georgians....were upset. Instead being almost slaughtered to extinction, now they had to contend with the idea of being part of an empire.
Their current endevaur is nothing more than another delusional grandiour to "remove their shackels", when in fact, unless they emigrate en-masse into America, their economic dependance ....no more like inevitable entanglement (huge market, huge industry in the Russian neighbourhood) is a given fact of geographic position.
As for political pressure: Russia doesn't like to be ****ed over.
Georgia is flirting with the one country, that beside being a long term more or less hostile member of the exclusive super heavy league, has manged to squash too many Russian toes in the recent pass to be to friendly with.
In other words: Georgia expected Russia to lend them all their economic support and concede all their natural advantages while they were selling out wholesale to the very people Russians concieve as the foreign invaders.
