Breaking with the longstanding tradition of using mythological names, GTVA command officially inaugurated the Gateway Portal Project in Delta Serpentis on April 24th, 2371. This project's goal was to build a subspace portal, based on the theories and technologies developed from sensor scan data gained from the Knossos Portal in the Gamma Draconis system. The first trial test of the subspace field generators was on September 18th, 2373, and as of May 19th, 2374, the entire system was deemed ready for full scale operational testing.
This picture was taken mere minutes before the first full trial run on May 19th, after all traffic had been cleared from the immediate area. Visible is the main support ring which houses the superconducting power transfer systems and supports the subspace field emitters. There are four primary emitters and six secondary ones, counterotating relative to each other. Also visible outside the main ring are the four power generators, needed to supply the voracious energy demands of the first generation node stabilization fields.
As completed, the Gateway Portal has an internal diameter of roughly 1,850 meters, more than sufficient to allow node access to the largest GTVA capital ships and civilian transports.
Silly me, forgot to bump map it. Whoops. And yes, as you can tell by the visible polys, this is a model for FS. Why'd I do it? Cause I was bored mostly..... I felt we needed a real Terran Knossos.

man, thats sweet...

very nice

hmmm.... First impressions are that it looks kinda "plain", but I guess that improves drastically when it rotates.
Second, those power generators seem a little boxy/plain from this viewpoint, although I can see what looks to be like more modeled detail in the outer face of the upper-left one.
Third, the ring looks a bit plain too - some low-poly shapes here and there to break up the consistency would be cool. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Last, Having the generators free-floating just doesn't sit right with me... When I was considering how to shape the Knossos extension to the Acadia (GTExK? xP? - Wahh!! XP!!!! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) ), I thought about having the counter-rotating parts spinning inside a stationary rail of sorts. Anywaay, justr having them float there looks to me a bit... off... :-/
Nitpicking aside, it has a nice Terran look, and I like the shape of those emitters. The texturing on the outside face of the upper-left one is amazing - it's hard to tell whether it's a texture or if there are modeled pipes there. Lucky for me I recognize the texture you used, though... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) Good job, dude. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, I wanted to strike a balance between detail and polyon count.... The generators are basically boxed fusion generators, and the main ring is just that, a support ring.
I thought about putting a little control cabin on somewhere, but decided against it.

Hmmm, I might want to work on the GTEx* for the Knosos...

Very nice Shrike! Very nice!
If we didn't have Charon, I'd ask for it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Lol (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
One more terran knossos (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Nice one, but I think Aldo's one rules (even more than the charon in fact)

Very impressive model (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
The backstory seems a bit unrealistic, though. There is no way the GTVA would have been able to come up with the money or resources to finance such a project, and complete the construction in 7 years.
Especially not with a thoroughly weakened economy and military, not to mention 200 million or so Capellan refugees to deal with. I'd put the timetable a bit farther ahead, maybe 2377 or '78.
Otherwise, it's great (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Really nice model there, but you could start to use some of that free time o' yours to work on some of the stuff you have to do for MT... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
-
Nice model.
Can it be used for FS2? And if so where can I download it (if its available).

That reminds me... if anyone's looking for Terran Portal names that are not "Charon", I've thought of two: Bifrost (the Viking rainbow bridge that provided access to Asgard), or James Whiteside (the discoverer of subspace).
As for Shrike's portal... I also think it looks cool (the texturing is great (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)), but a little on the skimpy side, the ring holding the stuff looks thin... although at the size it is, in-game it probably looks huge and not skinny. Methinks it's a bit small (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) , but a very nice model (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

As long as nobody knows what it is, what it looks like sor what it's for, I think you're ok (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That looks quite realistic; fits nicely with the Terran ship styles. I do agree with Mad Bomber though in that the Knossos could not possibly have been completed in 7 years; 20 or so years sounds a bit more reasonable IMHO. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Still, that can be changed very easily; good model overall. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
Need I remind you you how fast GTVA R&D is? Plus this thing is about two kilometers across....still smaller than a destroyer. And the GTVA has well over a hundred destroyers. 7 years is reasonable IMO.
In fact, I purposely designed it to be a 'lead up' to the Charon portal in general looks. Plus I did in yesterday afternoon in an hour or so... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)
-
You could have some neat defense missions defending a smaller Knossos from attack during an evacuation, methinks.
-
I could see the GTVI fielding some of these in ummm... unique locations...
Like some crazy old guy said: "Why have one when you can have two for twice the price!"

How'd you do the background? Glitterato?
It reminds me of IW2 backgrounds..great stuff that.
-
Completely off topic, but since IW2 was mentioned: does space in IW2 seem too... bright to anyone? It doesn't feel like the cold and inky black. It feels more like flying in endless evening sky.

Nah, noise map starfield with a gradient ramp nebula. Simple MAX trick.

Yep... but it changes in other systems...
