Can FS2 Retail use anything other than 8bit PCX for textures?

Well, it can use 8-Bit ANI files for some things too, but I think "No", is sill the correct answer here.

If you mean only 8-bit (as opposed to other bit-depths) then I'm not sure, but if you're referring to other formats, I'm pretty sure it also support DDS.  JPG and TGA are there too, if discouraged?

FS2_Open supports them. With retail you've got PCX and ANI at best.

256 colors. No the retail vesion has only PCX and ANI, but why would you want to stick to retail?
