Honestly, Bush should use a threat of a veto to leverage support for amnesty and/or a guest worker program.

Mexico: "If you try to build that wall, we'll... we'll got the UN!"
US: ":o."
-
They have absolutly no standing in international court.
-
so wait, how is this a mistake?
-
I am not racist... i dont give a sh*t where anyone comes from... as long as its legal or they gotta good reason for it 2 b illegal.
I say open the floodgates on cuban refugees... theyre stuck under a dictator... florida is within eyesight and many are here illegally because the USA would ship them back to the damn tyrant...
-
Those that make it to shore are allowed to stay, IIRC. But if they are intercepted while on the ocean they are sent back.
-

Because he is not leveraging this to gain support for a guest worker program which he campaigned on. It is a basic negotiating tactic and that ****ing idiot can't see it.

I'm for the fence, personally. I'm not racist or anti-immigrant, but I am against dozens of undocumented people swarming into the country and sapping our already flimsy economy. Millions of American jobs are going overseas, we need what we have left kept to Americans who need them - that crap about Americans not working those jobs is just that - crap.
EDIT: And that's another thing. I hate how if you're anything but against the fence, you're branded a racist. Screw that, I'm about 20 different ethnicities, and I still think that if you come to America, you should be here legally. If you don't respect our laws, why should we want you here?
-
While I may agree with the sentiment, a fence isn't going to do one iota of good. You'd have to build something akin to the Berlin wall for a physical barrier to be at all effective. Is that truly a road we want to go down?

Apparently we are bad people for not supplying these law breakers water and rattlesnake anti-venom, on a side note.
-
heyyhyeyehey--key word: illegal
Or should we let these guys in, and release some serial murderers and rapists into the streets?
even though thats not quite the same. :nervous:

That seems a little harsh. I don't have a particularly strong stance on the immigration issue one way or the other, but saving people who are going to die hardly strikes me as tantamount to condoning their actions. I mean, if a burglar breaks his neck trying to get into a house, is he denied use of a hospital?
-
It's the ex post facto criticism he's referring to (I hope). Basically the fact we get blamed when they die, and we didn't know they were there, much less were in a posistion to do something about it. A few thousand die every year somewhere in the vastness of the American Southwest and the deaths are always layed on the doorstep of the US, but I don't really see how you can make that work. Regardless people try.

Apply for citizenship... if you wanna come her illegally, at least have the decency to knock on some law enforcement's office door, and tell em you're here! American labourers are laid off often in favour of illegal immigrants who use 000 00 0000 as their social security number! They're paid less then we are, don't pay taxes on income and property... and are just a strain because they're taking up valuable room in industral urban areas!
I hate people who try to parasite off of the USA... get to the shore from Cuba if you want to get away from the damn dictator... apply for citizenship if you want to come from Mexico... same with from anywhere else (ehem... CANADA)!!

The US was charged with not putting watering stations in the desert and rattlesnake anti venom. Frankly though. Establishing such stations would only encourage the behavior.

It doesn't help that the US-brokered North American Free Trade Agreement has decimated Mexican agriculture by dint of price-lowering large subsidies for US farmers (which combined with NAFTA weakening of trade unions has resulted in less wages and less jobs within Mexico), y'know.
-
I think it's stupid that people feel the need to mention as the first thing that they say in this discusion, is that they are not racist.
-
After all, you're only a racist if you're a white american. Nobody else can be, apparently.
-
Having known many "illegals" personally (I live in Fort Worth), I'd just like to say that they have much more of a right to live in this country than some of you assholes. They and their children have a better future in America than Mexico, period. People in Mexico know this, which is why nothing short of police state measures or improvement in Mexico is going to stop the flood. They are doing exactly what you or I would do under the same circumstances.
-
I don't blame them, your right, I would do the same, but still, we can't just absorb everybody. they need to fix there own problem, we _cannot_ handle all of Mexico moving to America. it's not so much a matter of right as it is simple reality, if this flood continues it's going to have major catastrophic problems for the country economic, social, political, then were both up a **** creek, and I'm sorry I'm not going to sacrifice my country for there short term gain. America is the way it is not by the grace of some magical god, but by our own work, 100 years ago the difference between our countries wasn't that big, same with Canada, now what? were doing great, Canada's doing fine, there ****ed. don't give me any of that "capitalistemperialist" bull****, if Canada was able to survive in the state it is then Mexico should be able to also, we shouldn't have to suffer due to there poor choices, there problems will not be solved by running away, only by standing up and fixing it themselves.
-
America is the way it is not by the grace of some magical god, but by our own work
Well, technically, America is the way it is because a lot of people came (or were forced) here from other countries to do our work and be treated like ****.
-
Well who do you think first kidnapped and whipped those slaves into working? It's harder than it looks, y'know!
-
I'm sure the slaves made such a huge increasable vast change in the future of the country that led to us being the dominant power in the world and Mexico being impoverished, not only that but our use of slaves 200 years ago is in fact the reason why Mexico ended up poor, because you know they did not use any slaves back then because they weren't allowed to and we were, so, yeah I guess that totally makes Mexico's situation totally our fault and we should just let everyone in Mexico move into the US and have our land take our jobs, use our schools, and hospitals, be rescued by our police and fire departments, vote in our elections, decide public policy, yes, lets let the Mexicans dictate our domestic policy, cause they sure did a better job in there country if it just wasn't for our damned slaves the roles would be reversed!

that would be Africans by the way.

I said nothing of the sort. You said that America got to be the way it is through its own hard work, and I'm saying that no society develops in a vacuum. America became powerful and prosperous through the exploitation and subjugation of other groups of people. I'm not trying to condemn the U.S.-- that's just a fact. We weren't the first and we won't be the last. We didn't "make our own way"-- that's a product of our mythology-- we were formed by the convergence of people, often in the context of cultural, political, and racial hegemony. Thus, citing our country as an example of "up-by-your-bootstraps" autonomy is inaccurate. America owes itself to fortunate circumstances and to the rest of the world. So on what grounds can we expect another country to fix itself purely by the virtue of hard work? Again, I'm taking no position regarding what should be done, only on what is. It doesn't matter to me what your views on the immigration issue are.
-
Now is the time I point out that I dont care. Every major power in history was built by taking advantage of slaves, or by taking advantage of the people that resided before them. Every single one.
EDIT: Blast! Instaposted!

Observation; America was founded by immigrants and has one of the lowest population densities of the the world.

mexicans have a serious work ethic when you think about it. theyl work their ass off to fead their families. the very fact that they will sneak across a border to find work in amazing. with a work ethic like that im suprised mexico isnt much richer, seriously whats holding them back?
