Title: FS is kidding me
Post by: Superdreadnought on October 18, 2006, 12:14:39 pm
every time i finish the 1st "incoming transmission"-mission by me warping out within the last 15 seconds (yes, im inside the jump node) the mission just quits without a debriefing. when entering ready room afterwars it gives me the same incoming transmission stuff and i have to redo the mission ...

am i doing sth wrong or is this a bug (using 3.6.9 rc7)?

You have the avi cutscenes I take it?

Check that you have endprt2a.avi and endprt2b.avi NOT endpart2a.avi and endpart2b.avi If you have the wrong ones simply rename them.

If you don't have them check here (http://fsfiles.nukelol.com/FS2_Cutscenes.rar)

i got all the cutscenes, but they seem to be placed in the wrong folder (was in the upper "data/movies", not the mediavps one's ...

so this is the end of my life ... how sad ...

gotta thank all of u for this great work, guys (and of course to volutions as well).

are u planning to make a continuative campaign?

You don't have to die you know. That's why there are two endpart2 movies :)

Up to you to figure out how to survive :)

As for a continuation. The community aren't making an official one cause pretty much any of the campaigns you can pick are continuations of the story and we don't want to pick one as being official when instead we can give people a wide choice as to what to play next.

Although story-wise, the death ending works much better than the one in which Alpha 1 survives. That's obviously my opinion, though.

Robert Loggia does such a great performance as Admiral Petrarch that both ending cutscenes are excellent, but still the "grim" version of the ending works much better IMHO.

Obviously I died when I first time played the mission, I was toasted by the supernova about two klicks from the node... but despite that, I didn't feel like I had "lost" the game, I didn't feel disappointment in that regard, although I later played the game and beat the final mission. The happier ending just doesn't carry the same emotional load as the other one does.

if u had read my post properly ud know that i survived ... (to be honest i had a little conversion from a human fighting a space ship to some stellar dust when i fought the mission for the 1st time)

ne continuative campaigns u can recommend (actually i dont know where to get even 1)?

He meant HLP is where you can get campaigns (Hard Light Productions) take a look in this thread, any that say released and are stickied are usually where you can find new campaigns.  - Link (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=124.0)

 Of course Skippy's (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,20956.0.html) list is the best

Your best bet would be to read Karajorma's FAQ (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html)

If you have any more trouble come back here and we'll help as best we can. :)

Much more direct link. (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/installingmods.html)
This is the relevant section of the FAQ. Follow instructions to the letter.

it isnt working.

ive created a new folder (TecSup) with the TechSup-Ep1.vp file in it and added a mod.ini containing this:
Code: [Select]
[launcher]

image255x112 = FS2.bmp;

infotext     = Freespace II. No mods. No new effects. No new graphics. Freespace II Classic if you will. Select mediavps as your mod to activate the new graphics. Select fs1port mod to play FS1 or Silent Threat with SCP enhancements. DerelictSCP and Transcend are also mods, this incluides others Missions, also uses SCP enhancements. Warning: Remember to change your campaing in the campaing room to the correspoding one, if you going to run any mods, Like fs1port, Derelict or Transcend, none of those have support for the Retail FS2 campaing. See Readme First for more info. ;

website      = http://www.hard-light.net/;

forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums;

[multimod]

primarylist  = ;

secondrylist = ,mediavps;

im starting fs with these parameters then:
Code: [Select]
./fs2_open_r -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -missile_lighting -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -env -alpha_env -mod TecSup

when started i cannot select ne new campaigns and when starting the original fs2 cmpgn its just that.

Hmmm.

1) Damn that page needed some updating. The stuff on there should all work still but it's ugly as hell compared with how a modern mod.ini should look. I've done a quick update but I'll have to remember to give it a good going over soon.

2) Are you actually running on Windows? Cause mod.ini files are completely useless on Linux or MacOS X. The underlying feature they use (multimod) does work however so it's just a convenience thing.

3) I know you're not running FS2_Open 3.6.9 cause the file name is wrong so which build are you running?

4) I can't actually see anything wrong with that mod.ini so if you are running on windows and with a modern build you might as well try mine instead. Replace all the text in yours with this

Code: [Select]
[launcher]
image255x112 = FS2.bmp;
infotext     = Technological Superiority. ;
website      = http://lore.maxgaming.net/~scp/mantis/main_page.php;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=50.0;

[multimod]
secondarylist = mediavps;

5) I'm not familiar with technological superiority so I can't be 100% certain that your problems aren't simply due to you not having an actual campaign file in the VP you've gotten hold of.

im using 3.6.9rc7 on linux.

so, what is the difference between linux and windos version of fs2_open and how can i make my cmpgn work?
Title: Re: FS is kidding me
Post by: karajorma on October 20, 2006, 10:37:28 am
The differences aren't that large. Lack of a working launcher is probably the biggest one but seeing as all the launcher does is configure the command line that's not really a huge problem. In fact I should be able to figure out what's gone wrong even though I don't personally use linux.

The biggest problem is that I don't have the campaign you've chosen to install is one I don't have. So if you don't have the right version or something I wouldn't know.

What you should have is something like this

Freespace 2 Folder
-FS2_Open 3.6.9 RC 7 or above. (I can't help you much there but I suspect you've compiled from the less stable HEAD branch. This (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42218.msg862069.html#msg862069) should help you compile the right one)
-The standard FS2 .VP files (these all end in _fs2.vp)

-mediavps folder
--the mediavps (start with mv_ and end with .vp)
--the 710 patches (all of which are found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html))

-modfolder
--All VP files that came with the mod

--Data folder
---Anything that the mod tells you to stick in Data goes in here or a subfolder rather than Freespace2/data

Now change your -mod option to read -mod modfolder,mediavps and everything should work. If it doesn't double check your folder names and if that still doesn't work try it with another mod as you may have picked an incomplete one that doesn't have a campaign file. While you're at it check in the flight simulator to see if you can find any missions from this campaign as that will confirm the lack or presence of a campaign file.

Just Another Day: Special Edition 2 (http://www.game-warden.com/narfin/campaigns/axm_JAD_SE2.rar).

First campaign I found which is in a VP, doesn't require anthing else and will work perfectly with the mediavps. Perfect for testing :D

I suppose I should warn you that it's not an entirely serious campaign though :D

It's Axem's campaign but yeah. It's great :)

There's a sequel too :)

I like the sequel better!  :lol:

Favorite part of that entire campaign:

YMCA!  :D

I looked at the events for it and I still have no idea how he coded that... :doubt:
But then, my education on coding things is pretty spotty.

I've not looked at his code but I suspect it's one of the better uses of the cutscene SEXPs we've seen yet.

Indeed it is, set camera pos, and from what i see, over strenuous timing of the said positional switches :)
