Yeah, so I recently downloaded the freespace 2 game via the Underdogs download. I'm interested in making missions, and I know where to put the files. However, when I run freespace 2 and ask to play the mission, it says I need disk 2. What should I do?
Side note: how do you get user-made Campaigns into freespace 2?

:welcome:
Welcome to the HLP!
Exits are located in all the usual places (left right, up down, 5th-dimensionally, etc.), but most are blocked so don't go trying to use them! Emergency flamethrowers filled with holy water (don't ask) are located under all seats. The secure lockers hold plasma rifles and shotguns, but only admins, :v:, or Hooloovoos (hyperintelligent shades of blue) may open them. Do not go vent-crawling, unless you want to die. For our resident Shivan, Carl, lives in there. If you meet him, try throwing him your lunch. Carl likes lunch. Thank you and enjoy your stay!!!
For your questions: read this (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/intro.html), the ultimate compendium of Freespace-related knowledge. It will likely answer 99.9% of questions.

The HOTU build should have been hacked to not ask for that. But this EXE will fix it for you. Unfortunately, it won't display the cutscenes...

You could also use FreeSpace Open, which has slightly higher system requirements but will play the cutscenes.

Save your missions and campaigns in FreeSpace2/data/missions. Then they'll appear in the campaign room and the tech room.

Oh, I can play the normal campiagn well enough, it's custom missions that I have this problem with.

Ah, okay. That means the HOTU build was only halfway hacked. :)
-
Yeah. I'm starting to suspect that now. Odd. I used the exe I've had on my site for years and I never heard this complaint until about 2 months ago.
If someone can find me a hacked exe that will allow you to play campaigns and online I'll happily swap it for the one on my FAQ.
-
Huh. Custom campaigns won't wok either. i tired playing the Dues Ex Machina user-campaign, but it won't work Same error as before.
In addition, I didn't get the download from HoTU site directly. I got it from here: http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/pc/arcade_action/games_f/freespace_2.html
-
Oh. That's the old version of the HotU download. If you must get HotU, get the new version instead. That one is a complete ***** to use.

Where can I get the new version? I can't seem to acess the HotU site.
In addition, how would I save my charactors? I have 300+ kills, ya know. ;)

If you can handle it, grab the full version. Links can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_Freespace) and here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/general.html#WhereGetFS).
If you can't handle it, the second link has a link to the HotU download. Try it and see if it works.
As a side note, If you're into making missions, you'll want to upgrade to FreeSpace Open, as it offers many upgrades to FRED. A guide on how to get FreeSpace Open can be found here (http://tinyurl.com/owsu9/nooblist.html).

So... they both take me to a wiki page. I'm guessing the first option is to use the using Virtual Clone Drive, the second is to just get it off HotU?

I guess I should have asked this earlier, but...
is the FS Open mod going to be much mroe of a strain then the original?

not really a mod, but it depends.
If you install minimum needed, it should have a negligible effect on performance. If you install the MediaVPs or turn on some of the advanced graphical options, you may need to turn down your detail to compensate.

Everything is fixed!
Little off topic, but i'm working though the walk though, can I can't seem to find the event "has-arrvied delay"... where is it?
-
You mean SEXP...
Are you using FRED2 or FRED2 Open?
Contact me via pm and I will help you.
(or you this thread,so my numbr of posts will increase  )
-
It's in the same place on both IIRC. It's in the objectives submenu when you rightmouse click on a SEXP.
-
Thanks!
I'm using open.
-
If you ever can't find a SEXP simply run the launcher, go to the dev section and choose the output SEXPs option. When you run the game it won't actually run so turn that right back off again afterwards. In your main folder you will now find a HTML file explaining what SEXPs are present in the build of FSO you are using. That should be really helpful to you :)

Is there anything you can't answer? ;)

A few things. I assassinate people who ask me those questions in order to look all knowing though so watch out :D
