Don't get me wrong - good on him for taking action and all - but the man drives 8 Hummers... he's hardly the world's greatest anti-greenhouse pundit now is he?

Supposedly he scrapped them.......  although I agree with this particular legislation*, it doesn't mean I think he isn't a bit of a twat anyways.

*assuming it doesn't have holes in it big enough to drive...well, drive a hummer through, of course

He was unpopular because he tried pushing a hard right republican agenda in california to appease his masters in washington. Obviously this was foolhardy.....

Eh, California has alot of wasteful spending. As far as I know cutting budgets is not a hard right agenda. Neither is cutting teacher insano tenure.

Cali also has the largest proportion of electric cars anywhere in the world. The lucky bastards.

you know i really dont think the humans have anything to say about what the earth decides to do. not saying that global warming is a myth but rather saying that humans play a nil or very miniscule at most role in it. there isnt suffitient fossil fuel remaining in the world to do any irreversable damage. save perhaps all out nuclear holocaust, we really cant do **** to make the world more or less habitable. atmospheric and geological processies are always in motion. they are infact what made the planet habitable in the first place. if the earth suddenly decides to be uninhabitable it will happen and we wont have a god damn thing to say about it. ice ages occure like clockwork, theyre probibly the equilibrium which keeps the planet from overly cooking itself. you cant fix a problem in a system if youre ignorant as to how that system works. i dont think the average politician or even scinetist understands all the factors involved.

Global warming could be cyclic (like ice-ages) and we'd never know....... :nervous:

In any case governer Schwarxzenegger will lead a revolt on mars by the time it goes tits-up, Releasing alien tech and making an atmosphere for all of us :)

Permanently irreversable no but irreversible for the next few hundred or thousand years, definitely.

I dunno... Schwartzenegger as politician is essentially a populist, and populists usually say things that get them the most votes.

I think it's a continuously rising trend to criticize Bush and his government, so perhaps Governator just jumped into that train. Of course it could be genuine, but I have very little trust on most politicians on this kind of matters.

Not to say that "voluntary emission cuts" didn't suck. They should be mandatory for them to have any real effect in anything. What do they think, that a business company cuts down emissions voluntarily, which obviously always results at least in temporary reduce of income or increased expenditure (results being the same in both cases).

There's not much companies around that would do the right thing voluntarily, if it doesn't profit them. Most of them walk on the verge of legality as far as minimum wages and stuff like that are concerned - including emission regulations. :blah:

Couldn't Arnold Schwarzenegger just defeat global warming with a machine gun? Then, when he's finished, he can say something clever like, "Guess you couldn't take the heat."

Thing is...global warming can be damned...the real problem with car emissions in places like California and here in Southern Ontario is that many of those cars toss out so much garbage that durning humid days in the summer you can't breath. I've stopped my running routines on some days purely because the air is so filled with smog that breathing the stuff is both difficult (when you're trying to get a decent run in) and probably bad for my health.

Even if reducing emissions does nothing to the effect of global warming...it sure has a bunch of other things that are quite obviously important.  And if you live in an area that isn't affected by the nasty smog filled summers I've seen over the last 5-6 years...enjoy it!

Oh and I'm a car affictionado...so don't get me wrong here either.  Love the things.  Fantastic pieces of engineering and design...nice to finally see some efforts to take those engineering and design folks and put them into making the cars work better.  I can't wait for high performance (insane torque plus fuel economy) hybrids using ethanol or hydrogen or whatever works best with the lowest set of emissions.

I'm waiting for turbine driven hybrids.

Turbines are theoretically much more efficient than traditional combustion engines. They have smaller power/weight ratio and they are very well suited for producing energy for long times at static rpm, but they are not as good in fast acceleration, so driving a turbine car in urban area is a little frustrating if it's hooked directly into transmission.

That's why in urban area, the turbine charges batteries and produces also directly power for electric motors. In highway driving, the turbine will be hooked directly into transmission to avoid energy conversion losses - static speed is not a problem for a turbine, and highways consist quite much of static speed.

Every time the speed gets below certain point, the turbine is deattached from transmission and electric motors move the car again. Electric engines also provide fast acceleration, whenever it is needed.

We'll just see how much the Finnish government keeps the insane taxes on anything used to drive a car that is not gasoline. Because that's what they are doing here. Reason to that I can only guess.

Cutting spending, raising the minimum wage, pushing for stem cell research, and otherwise being a social liberal a hard right agenda does not make.  Being a Republican does not automatically mean that a politician will follow the Washington neoconservatives on every issue or not listen to liberals.
