I decided to install FS1 the other day (right before my old comp died) and play around after feeling nostalgic for the 640x480 goodness. Anyway, I'm in the asteroid mission with the Vasudan wings and Ace. I get to the Ace and the bastard kills me every time I encounter him. I must suck without shields, man.

I know the feeling. You get so used to being able to take a stray shot or two without it doing anything, and all of a sudden you're dead from a bunch of scratches.
-
Thats just the way I like it.
Getting killed ina few shots is the way to go - you have to FEAR your enemy.
As for how to deal with it - just unload the MX-50's at it. While it's busy evading those, you can close the distance, get either above or below it and let it rip. One dead Ace.
-
That's strange... when I first played FS1 I didn't noticed the Ace, I noticed him only when I installed FSPort 2.3... (so... I took 8 years to realize that there was an Ace in that mission :D)
-
I like having no shields and untargettable Shivans. That really gave you the we're f00ked feeling. Oh, and so do the beams on Shivvies in FSFreak's mod. ;)
-
I'm not too bad with unshielded craft in a gun fight; That mission in TIE Fighter where you have to clear a turret-mine-field in a 3-hit-death TIE Interceptor really hammered in the looping style I tend to use ;)
The problem is homing missiles - Only a small handful of ships in freespace can take a double-load of harpoons/hornets when unshielded, and even if you can evade them, the splash damage is often still enough to hurt you pretty bad...

That´s the mission where the traitor-bastard Harkov want´s to get rid of you, isn´t it?? But Vader gives him the ultimate price... ;7

what scares me is that I can see the logic behind your statement. :shaking:

This is what I always did. I would go to each area where an enemy wing is located, and make sure I have my wingmates with me, and eliminate them all one by one. Then I'd make sure they're all with me (not getting reloaded or something) and slowly go for the ace. When he's targetable, I have my wingmates attack him, unload a few MX-50's and then dodge and weave like crazy. After a few seconds, he'll be too worried about all your team mates attacking him then he will about attacking you. Then you just help your teammates polish him off and you're done.
-
Am I the only one who's found dogfighting Vasudans to be much harder than dogfighting Shivans (exception: SF Dragons)? They always seem to be hellishly fast compared to Shivans, and really good at dodging, something that Shivans (exception: SF Dragon) seem to be deficient in....
Also their capships have always seemed more accurate...
-
As much as I love FS, and I enjoyed FS1 I always thought the GTA got shields far too quickly. It made it more interesting trying to avoid being tailed in a dogfight.

I always just shot him down.......

was it always on easy? :P

No, it's more like I drug my wingmen with me :p

I played it on another PC, and I couldn't hear sounds because the sound card was broken... ::)
Then I bought FS2 and stopped playing FS1 until I found this forum when I changed the PC. Now I can't find anymore FS1 in my CDs...
-
Meh.
Anyway, this is hilarious. I just played FSPort. I got to the Ace part, fired off my MX-50's, dodged the enemy MX-50's, and I never got a shot at him after that. My wingmen took him out so fast I didn't know what happened. :wtf:
-
Yep, that's the way to do it. If you try on Insane and do the same without the wingmen, he'll take you out so fast you also won't even what happened, again.
-

In FS1 I was playing on medium.

Which is why those wingmen are Very Necessary. If anything to distract the Ace while you kill it.
-
I find the Ace is easier without wingmen, with one bank of MX-50s and another of Furies.
Launch all of your MX-50's while the Ace is not quite in sensor range while after burning, dodge the incoming Avenger shots and get behind the Ace, you'll need most of your power to your engines, which is fine cause your using ML-16s, keep behind the Ace and when you can get a shot in go at it with everything, quad lasers and Furies. This should get the Ace down in almost every difficulty level.
-
Um, why would the Vasudan ace be using Avengers at that stage of the game?
-
I don't know... but it is.
My guess would be balancing.
-
[Conspirisy thoery/] vasudans had already gotten their hands on a prototype and given it to the ace. When he died they lost their prototype and needed another[\Conspirisy thoery]

Conspiracy!! God damnit, you make all us theorists look bad when you cock up the spelling so bloody badly. :doubt:

The ace only shows up in that missions if you fulfilled all primary/secondary/bonus goals in the previous mission. I' can't remember exactly what it was, but I think it involved destroying a couple of Vasudan freighters.

Really? I actually never recall the Ace ever not showing up.
-
YA RLY!
-
I guess it's because I'm always so bloodthirsty that I always kill everything in sight if I can. I guess that's why the command brief says "unconfirmed reports." Hmmm, now that I think about it, I've passed the mission without actually encountering the Ace. I guess I just assumed my wingmen got him when I was doing something else.
-
Killing the ace is easy even on Insane. On Insane, you wingmen are a lot smarter and will kill the enemy easy. The key to winning before you have shields is to lob all your missiles at the enemy and keep calling the support ship. The AI sucks at dodging missiles so you shouldn't have a hard time killing the Ace (I completed the mission this way loosing only one wingmen).
The ace only shows up when, 1, you win the first mission (Eve of Destruction, guard the Orff, super-easy), and 2, two out of the three other enemy wings have been destroyed. So you have to pay attention.
-
The AI are flying Anubii, which = < shoebox strength.
The Seth is nearly as bad though....

Get Firefox 2.0 :yes2::yes:
It avoids "conspirisies"

I always found that the so-called Ace just ran away really fast, on pretty much any difficulty, and the main challenge was to chase after him.
-
That's what I've found.
The hardest part is your first approach though, when your coming up to the Ace... cause your unshielded Apollo will go down in a couple of Avenger hits.
-

That's why I have my wingies with me. I dodge and weave as I approach, merely firing off MX-50s until I pass him then maneuver behind him.
-
I would to the mission alone, the Ace wasn't so bad so long as you sent off some missiles to make him evade just prior to the attack then it's just stay on his behind and kill him.
my assumtion is that the Vasudans were prototyping the avenger prior to the Shivans arrival or during and were using the region of space to do a practical test deployment of th e weapon. :hopping:
-
I always sent my wingmen home after taking out the four wings and fought the ace myselft.
It was like that episode of Space: Above and Beyond.

Your hull integrity must be above a certain limit. Look at the SEXPs in the mission.

Maybe, but if McCarthy was still planning to sell the blueprints, maybe not.
-
at the end of WWII during the Korean conflict Russian Mig's fought against U.S. F86 sabres and U.S. pilots were initially shocked at the likeness of the Russian aircraft.
both Russia and the U.S. were working from German designs...... that said the Russians still wanted the blueprints for the F-86 to check for any improvments or weakness.
Vasudans initially stole or developed the Avenger, terrans initially stole or developed the Avenger, the storyline is from a human perspective.

laallalalllalalalalyou sixk qwhere's mt kebaba?

:eek2: DG is a little squiffy, .............. :shaking:
-
I always went after the Ace. Drug my wingmen along because my Hull would be halfway or more damaged by the time i got to him. He was tougf but not tougf enough. Didnt have too much of a problem takeing him out..
-
This is insane though, I used to be able to play the campaign from start to finish on Insane mode. Jesus, what happened to my non-shield skill? :(
-
Flying the Herc II in FS2 killed it...
don't worry... you'll improve.
-
I feel the same way, I remember finnishing FS2 on very hard including refusing to finnish the Sathana's battle without destroying all of the beam turrets before it warped and destroying the later arriving Demon's engines and eventually it......but now I'm struggling to destroy 2 Sathana's cannons and get away on very hard..... I still trash the Demon though.... hehe they should have given it more than 1 engine..... I've tried saving the Renenet a number of times by destroying the Demons primary cannon but it will leave if I don't trash the engines and the dam bomber is to slow to get to the other side and take out the other cannon..... or the Renenet is to stupid to stay on the safe side.... you choose.
-
Hercs kill you no-shield skillz... its so hard to fly without shields now... but anyways its still fun!
-
What really turned me on to FS1 is that you start the game without shields and find the technology later. It set the game apart from all the other mindless Star-Trek-clone games.
I know it sounds stupid, but for some reason I just like playing without shields. Maybe it's that high weapons damage and low armor make the fighting more intense and force you to be a little more careful.
-
it really added to the game, I started the Freespace series with FS2 and going to FS1 really made me change my tactics, being all brave and doing strafing runs that cost you your shields that you recharge following the run weren't an option.
if you started getting hit you had to address the situation immediately and didn't have the luxury of relying on a simple recharge for the next battle.
