Title: Battlestar Whatever
Post by: DaBrain on October 25, 2006, 05:56:34 pm
A ship I'm working on for fun. I hope it will match the BtRL quality standards when it's done.
It's actually not a battlestar, but a way smaller ship.

looks like an aeolius in High Def lol

It does, actually. An Aeolus MkII, i'm afraid. I take it you went with the Pegasus as a base for the aesthetic design?

I have to admit not seeing too much BSG in it, except the very roughest similarity in engine and nose shape.  Which is maybe what you were aiming for (truth be told, if you'd not mentioned 'Battlestar' people might see more similarity :D).

I see the Raynor in it.

I only really see the Aeolus, and possible one other ship who's name I cant remember, but has split engines like that, in it.

After my first attempt to make a BSG-like ship. I ended up with a model that looked like a mini battlestar.
It is supposed different from the battlestars. I'm working on the BSG-ish look though.

Any better now?

Now it definitely looks more BSG-ish when the hull is not as smooth as before.

Perhaps the hull plating would fit better into BSG engineering style if the armour plates in the front section were rectanguar instead of what they now are. Now the frontal hull plating seems to be consisting of seemingly random polygonal plates. Which makes it look like the armour was cast one piece and then someone cut lines into it, dividing it into these polygonal parts... or alternatively it looks like it was manufactured from complicatedly shaped parts, which isn't really probable (or sensible), since the more complicated parts the ship uses, the more expensive and slow it is to manufacture them.

It obviously looks very good, whatever it ends up being.

That bit about the armor being square was exactly what I said on the internals. Although that really looks kickass now :D

I'm really having fun with all this stuff. ;)

Yeah, I'll work on the front a bit tomorrow. Maybe I can complete the model tomorrow.

thats a sweet looking ship.  It would be nice to see a non-battlestar warship...i mean, the US Navy is sailing around in a bunch of aircraft carriers...they have frigates, destroyers, subs....a whole battle group...I wonder what battlestar's battle group would look like...in battle... :nervous:

It's amazing how much those 'tubes' add to the model.  Before I reckoned it was maybe a bit plain and undetailed, but now it's loverly.

I think there'd be demand for this ship as a Freespace universe ship.  I suggest re-texturing it to FS and reconfiguring the weapons to match.  I'd say either a heavy cruiser based on the Aeolus, or a light corvette of the same lineage.

With the new stuff being worked on for FS, those angled turrets on the sides can be made functional. :)

I've put this model on hold, cause I've no idea for the engines. Hopefully StarSlayer will help me out with this too.

For now, I'm working on one of his concepts, but I still plan on completing my own ship. ;)

Love the off-centre railguns. Tough little boat you've got there.

Thanks, this motivated me enough to work on it a bit again, even though I didn't have much time.

Do those turrets elevate or just rotate? Can't elevate much unless the barrel pivots are right at the back end of the turret.

Post by: DaBrain on December 14, 2006, 02:16:55 am
The barrels are subobjects. They're more flexible. And base of the turret just rotates.

Porbably... I'm not sure about this yet.

everything is well balanced in that model, the turrets are in correct place. can't see anything wrong with it actually :)

Indeed. I'm always impressed at a model that can look so damn fine without texturing. Love to see it with a skin on, although I'll bet it must be a ***** to map... @.@;

I wasn't able to work on the model for a while, but I'll continue the day after tomorrow. I plan on completing the ship this year. Maybe because I'll enter a very small rendering contest with it. ;)

BTW don't forget that StarSlayer made the concept for this.
Without his concept the ship would be way more boring.

I've already posted it on scifimeshes.com.

Polycount... not sure. 30k something I guess.

I didn't have the time to work on it for it... again. :(
Once I'm done with the MV pack stuff, I might feel better about working on something else. ;)

I'd prefer Zoic. ^^

Zoic...That's familiar for some reason...

Didn't they do the special effects for the LotR movies...?

Firefly, Serenity, and BSG are the ones I know.

That was Weta (WetaWorks?) in NZ.  Zoic did/do, as mentioned, Firefly/Serenity, BSG and also CSI, Prison Break, Day After Tomorrow (movie) and Van Helsing (movie).

Rainmaker, as an aside, are the company that do Stargate CGI amongst other things.
