This crazy idea recently popped into my head and wouldn't go away. :wtf: Soo I had to post it.
Make ships with characteristics of the various World War 2 aircraft, like a B-17G (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-17_Flying_Fortress) spaceship would have four engines, a two gun chin turret, a two gun dorsal turret, a two gun tail turret, a two gun ventral turret and a single gun turret on each side. It would, of course, be a bomber.
A P-51D (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-51_Mustang) fighter ship would have a single, very powerful engine, six guns and a limited missile capacity.
Including the advanced aircraft Germany was able to design but not produce in large numbers, and the advanced Japanese aircraft which were produced in fairly large numbers, but they had no skilled pilots to fly, would be a nice addition. See The History Channel's 'Secret WW2 Aircraft' documentaries for these. Japan had a couple thousand jet and rocket planes built, many in deep bunkers that probably would've withstood a Fat-man or Little-boy sized atomic bomb. Unfortunately for history buffs, most of those Japanese aircraft were destroyed, while a few examples of Germany's still exist.
'Course the engines would have to point towards the rear, most fighters would have a single engine, centrally located in the back.
Major sites that were attacked (like Pearl Harbor, Berlin, London, Verdun) could be really huge capital ships or installations/stations. Important targets like bridges and dams, shipyards etc could be smaller capital ships.
World War 2 Aircraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:World_War_II_aircraft) (Not quite an all inclusive list, I put a link to the P-61 on the discussion page.)
Some of my favorites are the P-38 Lightning, P-61 Black Widow, and the Douglas B-26 or A-26 Invader; a twin engine light bomber that in some configurations had up to 14 forward firing guns, plus two in a dorsal turret.
I bet y'all think I'm crazy. ;) Fighter combat and bombing missions in WW2 are the inspiration for games like Freespace! Think there'd be games like this otherwise?
-
Interesting, not crazy!

I had a similar idea some time ago. In the first place, I thought of WWII planes-like spaceships, but then I decided that would be better spaceships based on modern planes (if only I could find the sketches I made some time ago...). I tried to make a Typhoon-like model with trueSpace, but that model really sucks...
EDIT: it would be quite good to have spaceships based on these planes: http://www.luft46.com/

Idea's not so crazy, it struck me many times but I never thought much of it.

If I only were able to mod, I'd have already started. Unfortunatley, I'm not good in anything... :doubt: (for Steadfast, I only wrote the storyline, the fiction, and I made the logo, so I don't think I could be that useful...).
However, I know that Blender can import X-Plane's models, so I could try something...
-
you know, this actually sounds really familiar
i wonder why
hmmm
-
Could it have something to do with the two-mission Battle of Endor-style campaign 'Battle of Midway'? That was based on WWII.
-
Oooh. Triebflugel.... :eek2:
-
I'd be very happy to help in this mod, even if I don't know how. Maybe tomorrow I'll start making an (extremely low-poly) model of the V1 (IMHO it's the simplest model... :D) to make a cruise missile (that would be good in FreeSpace!).
BTW, if you need some infos on a plane, just ask: in my library I should have something about every airplane of WWII.
-
The library in your head...?
-
.....and the advanced Japanese aircraft which were produced in fairly large numbers, but they had no skilled pilots to fly, would be a nice addition.
Actually, it was more a case of the Allies having dated airecraft but they eventually superceeded the japs with the likes of the Mustang, Thunderbolt, Hellcat etc etc. The best Jap pilots were more than a match for the Allies but were they eventually forced to put poorly trained inexperienced pilots into service when things became desperate towards the end of the war.

The 2nd or 3rd ship I even made was a Spitfire......
-
The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ky%C5%ABsh%C5%AB_J7W) "Magnificent Lightning" wouldn't need much in the way of Freespacifying. ;) The Nakajima Kikka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakajima_Kikka) "Orange Blossom" seems to be a poor imitation of the ME 262. I recorded the two documentaries from The History Channel then put them on Super Video CD. Now... where have I put those CDs...
DVD versions are supposedly available here http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml%3fid=72620 and here http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml%3fid=71150

And also the Mitsubishi J8M1 Shusui (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_J8M) (basically a license-built Me 163).
Also, on an historical aircraft magazine I found some infos on the Kayaba Katsuodori, a manga-like design based on the Heinkel P1078C (of which you can see a section drawing below the Katsuodori, since there aren't any section drawing of the Katsuodori). Since I couldn't find anything on the net, I'll post an image scanned from that magazine:
(http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8886/kayabakatsuodoriyx1.th.jpg) (http://img222.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kayabakatsuodoriyx1.jpg)
Also, I'll try to translate for you some infos about this plane:
This project started when the Kayaba built a ramjet engine in 1937. To use this engine, the Kayaba built a relatively simple airframe, with a wing sweep of 35,5°, fairly long wings and tailless.[...] Since the ramjet starts working only at a speed of 400 kph, on the sides of the fuselage there should have been 4 solid-fuel JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) engines.[...] With those JATO engines, the Katsuodori should have reached 10000 meters of altitude in 3 minutes.[...] It was designed for a (quite optimistic) endurance of 30 minutes. It should have attacked enemy aircrafts with 2 Ho.105 cannons (30 mm caliber).

This would be quite good to add!
EDIT: I forgot the Yokosuka MXY-7 Ohka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohka) ("goose", in Italian :wtf:), that could be another cruise missile just removing the cockpit.

According to those A&E/THC documentaries, Germany and Japan had designs for jet fighters that would've at least been the equal of the North American F-86 Sabre.
Sorta gives a clue or two as to where the ideas came from that went into the F-86 and MiG-15...
So sad for them that Hitler was a schizoid who kept changing his mind about what weapons programs to put resources behind (and the totally defekt decision that the ME-262 should be used as a light bomber and the Arado AR-234 light bomber was to be used as an anti-bomber fighter) while for Japan it was supply problems and a Navy and Army that insisted on not using common aircraft that could serve the same role for both services.

other than the Lightening in the Max7 tuts, a Hawker Typhoon. ;)

During WWII, there has been a joint-venture between 2 Italian aeronautical industries, the Caproni and the Reggiane, that led to the design of the Ca/Re-2007/2008, a jet fighter very similar to the F-86, but it was never built. I found only an image of the model of the Ca/Re-2007 at http://modelingmadness.com/reviews/axis/ity/wanta2007.htm. The 2008 is very similar. I found an image of the 2008 on a magazine, but it's between the 2 pages, so I can't scan it properly.
Also, the Focke-Wulf Ta 183 (http://www.luft46.com/fw/ta183-i.html) is somewhat similar to the MiG-15...

i don't know
maybe it has something to do with big-ass ships circling each other and launching salvoes of doom
and agile small fighters engaging in gun combat
torpedo bombers making daring raids on ships sprawling with turrets
like in ww2, but i think i have seen this somewhere, quite often actually
-
did the scp peeps ever get a convincing gravity system worked out ?
-
Ca/Re-2007
Yesssss. A fighter with four big cannon around the nose! :)
-
Wasn't the whole idea of FS2 "WWII in space?" I remember something at the end of the trailer for it (or maybe in the demo) that said "WWII style combat."
-
Yup. Complete with simulations of how pilots parked their Messerschmidts and Mustangs and Zeros in midair while waiting for the ammo reloading blimp. ;)
-
I made the V1 model. Here is the trueSpace screenshot:
(http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7113/v1tq4.th.jpg) (http://img72.imageshack.us/my.php?image=v1tq4.jpg)
This is actually my first model I've ever made! Infact this is very clear: that thing looks like everything but a V1!
Well, to make this model, I cheated a bit... :nervous:
I firstly made the model with X-Plane's Plane Maker, and then imported it into Blender and then trueSpace using some plugins that Herra told me to use.
What do you think of it?

Hilarious!
Well, I'm actually trying to do something similar based on the XP-55 (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/URG/xp55ascender.html) and on the Hs P.75 (http://www.luft46.com/henschel/hsp75.html) :nervous:
