Title: Try this for a texture.
Post by: bizzybody on November 09, 2006, 04:12:34 am
I was looking around for things to scan for model textures when I picked up an oil filter and had an 'Ah-ha!' moment. Here's a small scan of the end of a Fram oil filter that screws to an engine. I selected and filled the hole in the center with black then selected around the outside and cut to a new layer, then copied that into the PSD for one of my fighters. With some scaling it became part of the texture for the gun and missile ports. :)

With some imagination it could also be an engine exhaust, a fuel hose connection, a power or data jack, or various other things.

Ingenious. Or as the Guiness guys say, "Brilliant!" XD
Seriously, awesome idea. Never would've thought of that one - although I'll bet wheel drums and other automotive parts could be cool too.

I decided to take it to a new level! Organic hand hulls!1! lol I scanned my hand and edited it just for the sake of doing it really.

Yup, I've been using tricks like this for a while, another good thing to cut stuff out of is images of circuitboards, if you do it right, it can save a lot of work for inset details etc ;)

someone more software proficient than I am should put those on, say, a Deimos, and post a pic. Anybody?

If it was me... organic Deimos lol! Well no, I'm not interested in doing this yet but it will certainly give 'photo realistic graphics' a new meaning.

I see maybe a logo for a 3rd party faction in that hand scan.  But that's just me...
