Oh the pain...
I was just sitting here, innocently, minding my own business. Well, actually, I was sitting here working out the textures needed for a ship mod for Iwar2. Suddenly, a thought struck me and I felt the urge to ask my wife a question... I should have known this would be a mistake.
"Hey, babe? Do you think I could ever get a job doing this stuff [ie, 3d modelling] for a game company?"
Not a moment's hesitation: "No."
If you'll excuse me, I'll be over there in the corner weeping. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
(I should point out that my wife was kidding, but let me tell you: that caught me completely off gaurd! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))

Actually I've not posted much of anything here. Um.... Look at these I guess. They go from oldest to newest, hitting some highlights or something:
Ancient Stuff
1. (my first space ship) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/old/brute.jpg")
2. (a logo I did for unit in the US Navy) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/old/cpw1.jpg")
3. (my second, third and fourth spaceships) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/old/wasptrio.jpg")
4. (squad of fighters leaving the remains of an illegal arms factory) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/disk3a.jpg")
Recent Stuff
5. (an armed tug) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/molly04.jpg")
6. (medium fighter) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/jaycy05.jpg")
7. (heavy torpedo bomber) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/kierra07.jpg")
8. (advanced interceptor) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/Misato03.jpg")
9. (fighter carrier) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/nate05.jpg")
10. (system patrol vessel) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/roon12.jpg")
11. (patrol in an asteroid belt) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/Misato04.jpg")
12. (fleet repair facility and shipyard) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/raindance06.jpg")
13. (a fast missile frigate) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/alec7.jpg")
Very Recent Stuff
14. (a beyer's scarab beetle) ("http://404error.com/mikhael/3dart/beetle.jpg")
15. (an alien in lightwave) ("http://404error.com/unsorted/jan04.jpg")
16. (cheezy fighter design) ("http://404error.com/unsorted/lwship03.jpg")
17. (a dragon I'm working on) ("http://404error.com/unsorted/drake06.jpg")
That's mostly in order. Its a big mess, and it leaves out a lot of really, truly bad stuff.

I was referring to my wife's comment. Not my actual talent. About three quarters of that is TS2 or TS3 and the most recent stuff (the dragon and the beetle and the cheezy fighter) are all Lightwave.

Sorry, I'm going blind again, I thought you said that stuff was bad.. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Are those for FS or what? I mean some of them that are models

Look at the first one Thorn; that is bad and not in the good way.
I will admit, the system patrol boat, the advanced interceptor, the shipyard, and the bomber all have special places in my heart. The escape from the arms facility is actually hanging on my wall (my wife surprised me and printed it poster size on the digital press where she worked).
Night Hammer, those are... um... for nothing. I model stuff in 3d for fun, with the hope, one day, of landing a gig with a game design company (Particle Systems and Volition pay attention. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)). I've started working on modding Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos. That armed tug listed up there was my first ship (it still needs textures). I wouldn't mind giving modding Freespace a shot, but I think that most of you lot have that gig pretty well sewn up (and quite well, I might add. Venom2506 and aldo_14 come to mind immediately. I look forward to both Over The Top and Reciprocity).

*peers at Thorn* *takes Thorn's temp*
You're running a high fever! It's affecting your brain. That first one (the Brute) causes me pain to look at.
The Wasp, Dark Wasp and Hornet are probably my favorites from the ancient history section... in fact... let me go edit again...

You should really apply for a job at a gaming company! Where do you live? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Bah, leave me alone - it's 9am and I have college in an hour. I got home at 4am after a night out wandering the hills around my house drinking with some mates... I feel like
monkey and spelling isn't my priority (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Theres only one way to get a job in the CG field.
2 words-
HARD
WORK
generally its almost a requirement to be a good traditional illustrator/animator, as most of the basic rules of thumb are the same.
You will have to spend a good year obsessively learning your software of choice as well.
Most universities offer decent courses, but you m ay be better advised going on a corporate-certified course as they tend to be better organised and funded.
Do some research, if ya think yer good enough, punk!
.
ok..jk.
If its a field you're really interested in, you'll find a way to get into it.
------------------
have you ANY idea of how much trouble you're in?
assault on a police officer.
Theft of police property.
Illegal possesion of a firearm.
FIVE counts of attempted murder.
That comes to...
twenty-nine dollars and 14 cents.
cash, cheque or credit card?

East coast of the US right now. The company that runs Anarchy Online (and did the Longest Journey *sniff* *bliss* has a tech office up the road here. Redhat (the Linux OS vendor) is around the corner too. Its a tech region really, but not much in the way of game companies.
This will, however, change in a couple of years. My wife and I will be moving back to Adelaide, or perhaps even Sydney (but only for a little while).

Sorry about that. My webserver is hosted at three desks over from mine where I work (there are advantages to working for a hosting company. Dedicated servers rock). We were having some serious issues with our internal network today because one of the network admins put a test router on the live network. Now all the internal routers have crazy routing tables, and their arp caches are completely nuts.
