i just joined and need some help. my "campaign" i'm making is doing good, finally figured out mostly how the first mission's gonna work out:
Big shivan incursion a week before campaign starts, i haven't chose which system so send ideas! The last line of defence in that system has been established at a jump node to another allied system. The defence consist of: A MODIFIED deimos class corvette. thats it, save the two wings of fighters you lead in. the shivans are trying to dogpile two liliths, a rakshasa and a bunch of fighters onto the deimos, the GTCv Serene. about a minute into the mission a vasudan cruiser (aten class) will jump in and try and help. It is supposed to either get in the Serene's way, or draw the shivans fire for a minute beacause it warps in right inbetween the serene and the cruisers. The Serene's captain yells at the vasudans to bug out VIA either the jump node or just plain warp out. At best the blast from the cruiser blowing up wont hurt the Serene. I'm kinda stuck on what should happen for the next two minutes, but once shivan forces are destroyed at the end you and the Serene will get a bit of respite. then it ends with a Argo and a Orion jumping in to hold down the fort, with the Argo going in to repair the Serene.
Any feedback on that would be good, also do you think i should add a small convoy of fleeing ships in? Right now its kinda easy because the Serene's Vasudan slash beam cannons rip throught the shivan cruisers while its turrets (armed with both standard and long range flak, morning stars and Prometheus S's) tear apart the fighters. the only things i got done is put in the ships up to the part were the Aten gets destroyed. only event is the beam free stuff.

Edit: oh, i almost forgot, at the start of the mission you're right underneath the Rakshasa, and it's AAA rips apart a couple of your wingman before they get it together.... I'm kinda gonna leave out the Rakshasa from the briefing, so you really are clueless the first time you play and WHAM.... ;7 ;7 ;7 ;7 its cool yet depressing to watch 3 of your wingmen get blow apart as then race past you to join the battle.....

GTCv Serene... rather ironic name for a warship don't you think? :p
It sounds good. Especially the "Rakshasa blasts everything right at the start" idea. Kinda reminiscient of the "DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!" scene we all know and love. Might add some bombers for good measure, they'd pose a greater threat to the Serene than fighters anyway, if you want to make it tougher. The small convoy is a good idea, but I suggest doing it for atmosphere's sake, and not have any Shivans attack them. Too hard for the player to split his attention between two objectives on opposite sides of the battlespace... especially with the Alpha wingmen down right at the start.
Systems: you might try having the Shivans come in from the "southern" end of the nodemap, like around Bernard's Star and Dubhe. Or from the opposite side, in Kaus Borealis or Mirfak. Not much has been done in those systems so it might be fun.

thanks! i really was torn between having it in one of the rim systems or in a populated place... you know how i mentioned that there was a jump node in the area? i think i might turn the system beyond that into one big military base as the campaign goes on.... sorta like England was in the year leading up the D-day.
Also, i'm kinda making this mission around some holes (best way i could put it) the Deimos and the fighters are gonna be replaced by ships i'm gonna make (i'm trying to start modding, dont even have programs yet ;) ;) ;) )
The fighters are gonna be replaced with the GTF Eagle (unofficial name) a multi-role fighter that's model is literally gonna be a (attempted) copy of the Valkyrie from freespace1... The Deimos is gonna be replaced be this sorta "heavy Cruiser" i'm gonna make.... thinking its gonna sorta have some traits similar to an Aeolus that's been up-gunned in the anti-cap ship department..... however it will *try* to keep the Aeolus class' great anti-fighter record. i'm gonna try and give it the Deimos's can-do-everything-except-destroy-a-sathanas attitude..... What do you think about giving it a pair of super big engines that are both connected by that.... uhhh..... whatever that thing is that covers the rearward-most engines on the Deimos..... its sorta like a shield..... bear with me, i'm 11!!!!!

the Rakshasa i actually gave initial to attack beta wing (there's two wings of fighters) i'm not very good with SEXPs in some departments..... not quite good at doin' the dynamic goals or whatever....
anyway, i just added that if the Serene gets to about half damage (it kinda will automatically no matter what you do, dont worry it steadies once one or two of the cruisers have been knocked out... or at least their beam cannons...) the Serene's EXPERIENCED captian will send a message... a the small ensuing conversation goes like this, with Alpha two playing the same role as he did in the mission that you had to stop *cough*ya right... *cough* the Iceni from escaping deneb.... dont we all remember that moment were he starts shouting at command.. "What the hell is going on here?!?!?" and command replies calmly "You're outta line pilot." Well, its one of those moments..... :drevil:
Serene: Pilots, PLEASE help! we are sustaining critical damage!!
Alpha 2: Hang tight, Serene!! We're doing the best we can!!!!!
Beta 3 then pipes up:Can't we get some more cap ships in here? (doesn't yell.. kinda weakly inquires command)
Alpha 2: Fighters, cruisers, anything!! I DONT CARE!!!!
Alpha 2 then screams: ARE YOU LISTENING COMMAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Command: Don't worry pilots.
Command: we are deploying the GVD Nukami to help...
That Orion i was gonna have jump in will be changed to a Typhon.... in the start of the campaign the only up-to-date stuff should be the handful of Deimos' and the Eagle class fighters.... kinda wanna give the feel that the fleet here was kinda sidelined because there was nothing really there....
Edit: errr... did i say Deimos? i mean that heavy cruiser i'm creating... call it a corvette if you like, i just like cruisers because they tend to be faster then the destroyers.... not a fan of "the bigger the more beam turrets you can slap on" philosiphy....

Update on mission progress....
1. put in a wing of Nahema's armed with rebel bombs A.K.A. the Tsunami bomb from FS1 to attack the Serene
2. Changed 2 of the 3 wings of fighters that were attacking the serene into Mara's, gave them orders to defend the nahema's... its a real pain in the neck trying to hunt down those 4 nahemas when a bunch of maras are trying to break a record for how many hornets can be put in your fighter.... makes it kinda challenging.... :D :D :D
3. The other thing that makes it hard to get the Nahemas is that the Vslash's coming from the Serene (i put 6-odd on there :P ) tend to rip up your wingmen... im thinking about switching out those with Ultra anti-fighter beams cause those do decent damage because of there fire rate (every 2 seconds)... that also means that they can tear apart fighters which is our job..... ;)
4. That stupid Rakshasa isn't doing it's job!!!!!! I think i did a sloppy job on the AI for it (what did you expect, im 11) but for good measure i'm gonna add a couple of SAAA to it....
that's it. if anyone wants to help me with this campaign (or tell me how to attach the mission file) please tell me.... half the time i can't understand what im doing..... :sigh: :sigh:
Edit: one test later.... i'm gonna have to take out the "Aten jumping in, getting blow apart by shivans but it distracts shivan fire" idea.... im gonna keep the cruiser jumping in, Serene tells them to scat idea, im also gonna keep the shivans attacking the new cruiser idea, but im gonna have it try to be helpful.... also can someone please help me find a beam that will suit my needs until i make my super cruiser thing? ultra anti fighter beams did pretty much zilch against the cruisers, one of the reasons the Serene almost got destroyed.... man! its a long way to go, i haven't even put in the convoy, jump node, anything really.....
Edit2: Bahhh.... im gonna have to partially gut this mission... its not doin to good..... delete the cruisers except the Rakshasa, start from scratch on those.... gonna have do redo the Serene (still need help on the beams)....take out the Yakiki for now....

mission update on progress
ummm..... well... i defaulted the Serene's weapons... worked like a charm, better than my configuration:eek2:
took out the two liliths.... replaced them with a moloch... added a little convoy... added the jump node... put in some waypoints for the two ships to follow then warp out VIA the jump node.... had the moloch try and run the 'blockade' and warp out through the jumpnode...... gonna add in a cruiser warp in about a minute into the mission and whoop the moloch's butt, ease up the Serene's job..... then im gonna add in some fighters.... work on the events (my mission currently consist of almost zilch)..... how do you think this sounds: the shivans are gonna send a message that temporally shows up on all of Serene's computer screens. later analysis reaveals it's in ancient text, no idea what it might say.

Couple of points
1) No need to update us every time you change the mission
2) You might want to keep what happens in the mission a little closer to your chest so that you don't spoil things when you release the mission. :)
Oh and while I'm at it, don't double (or in this case quadruple) post if you can help it. You can edit the previous post quite easily :)

thing is, i can't even read my own post then..... and i keep telling you about it because i keep getting little problems that i cant even explain.... (except one were the moloch got to about half health the went boom.... one of those feels good moments.... except that it was also one of those WTF moments ;) )
errrr..... edit.... well.... i just got another :eek2: moment..... the Serene suddenly just departed at the beginning of the test.... slapped the moloch so hard it blew apart...... :jaw:

There are only two reasons a ship will depart. You've given it the ai-warpout order in an event or the departure cue you gave it in the ships editor has come true.
It's your responsibility as a FREDder to make sure that there is nothing in the way when either of those two things happen :)

thing is, the Serene isn't supposed to warp out. period.
i found it just before i went to bed..... accidently told the serene to warp out when another ship should have.....
i like this mission.... its the kind that if you get you butt kicked, lose most your wingmen, the few surviving friendly cap ships are critically damaged if they aren't dead.... kind of a sacrifice situation..... :D

All I can say about this site, Mcafee likes it, I haven't seen any stalkers, and the only weird part about it is the red background.

Sure, just post the finished mission in the Missions & Campaigns forum.
To put stuff up, see the little plus sign on the post screen, says "Additional Options" next to it? Hit it and use the "Attach" option. You can then attach the .FS2 file.
Screenshots: I use Fraps, but if you don't want to download it, then the Print Screen button works too.

I think im almost done.... just gotta do briefing and that stuff then its done.... might release it, but dont expect much because im only 11.... plus i couldn't get a lot to work.... who am i trying to fool its essentially a scaled down BOE mission..... its ok but it seriously lacks..... :hammer: hee-hee....

Actually, I started FREDding FS1 when I was eight or nine... although I didn't discover 3D ship placement for a couple years. :p

started fredding when i was ten... in a couple days it'll be the 1st anniversery of my getting freespace.... i got the demo 3 years ago with a joystick.... when i played freespace with the joystick it slowed the game to about .2 frames per second, and then it would get so bad i couldn't quit and i had to kill my computer's power.... :mad:
