I'm running freespace open on a P4, 1gb, geforce fx 5200, XP pro machine. I've been playing freespace for a while now, and all out of the blue, I start up the launcher, and when it get to the select player screen, I hit my player, and it makes the little bzoink noise a few times, and then it crashes and gives me that microsoft error found message. I started in opengl, switched to direct3d, and so on, but it still doesn't work. I was just playing it this morning, so I don't know what could possibly have gone wring.

what version of FreeSpace open are you using? MediaVPs? patches? Launcher?
however, since it WAS working, try one of these:
1. No mod.
2. New pilot.
3. System Restore to yesterday.

I think I used this here:

I'll try the system restore, though.

Also you could try running it in window mode (launchers features tab -> dev tools -> ). Also running the debug wouldnt probably hurt either.
Try this build too http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/rc7dot9.rar

before the system restore, try the new pilot.
I know those instructions work, (I wrote them myself) but Wanderer is right, download those files and use them.

The new pilot works, but I was so close to finishing derelict, I want to get into my old pilot.
By the way, I attached the debug dump, and I got a load of messages saying something about ballistic missiles on about ten deifferent ships.

Well for a start you haven't installed derelict properly. The way you should have it is Derelict in its own folder. Then open the mod.ini file and change it so that the secondarylist entry reads like this.
secondarylist = mediavps;
Then rename your media_VPs folder to mediavps and run the derelict mod using the launcher.

I did that, but it didn't work.
