Title: Official HLP IRC-channel on Trial
Post by: Fury on November 22, 2006, 09:15:19 am
We're well aware that it has been suggested many times in the past, but it was again suggested after the recent server move. Since the admins are in the groove and we're quite confident the frequent server issues are now a thing of the past (*crosses fingers*), we fired up an official IRC-channel for Hard Light Productions. There's a catch however, the channel is only on trial. Depending on how it works out, it may stay or it may be terminated.

What is IRC? (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html) Click on the link to find out and how to use IRC, but in short it is a medium of real-time internet chat. Since it is a real-time chat, definition of "spam" is much more loose there than it is on these discussion forums. We do not intend to tolerate just anything however, rules as laid out in the Guidelines For Forum Conduct (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,37583.0.html) applies to our IRC-channel as well, although moderation will not be as strict.

To use an IRC-network, you need an IRC-client. If you prefer a client that supports multiple protocols including but not limited to ICQ and MSN, good choices are Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) (Windows) or Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) (cross-platform). If you like dedicated IRC-clients, mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/) (Windows) or XChat (http://www.xchat.org/) (cross-platform) are good choices.

We chose the EsperNet (http://www.esper.net/) as the IRC-network where our IRC-channel is hosted. (Kudos to Turnsky for suggesting this one) Choose your favorite IRC-client, connect to one of the EsperNet's IRC-servers, and join to channel #hard-light!

If this is the first time you connect to one of the EsperNet's servers, pay attention to the message of the day (MotD) which is displayed in your status window. EsperNet seemed like a good choice because it is not a big IRC-network, so it should be less vulnerable to abuse such as denial of service attacks and malware and it has less nicknames registered. Remember to use common sense when it comes to security, don't accept incoming file transfers or commands from unknown people, or an0n.

Don't forget to read this tutorial (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html) if you're new to IRC, the client you chose will also have its own set of help files or pages and maybe tutorials.

Because not all admins will maintain their presence on IRC and the admins that may do, cannot be on the channel 24/7, which is why we would like to have some assistance from you in order to maintain decent moderation on the channel when it is required. If you're interested, post in this topic or send a message to an admin if there's one online at the time. Only those who have at least decent reputation on these forums will be qualified. If you're accepted as a channel operator (IRC equivalent of a moderator), abusing your powers can get you banned both on IRC and on these forums.

Remember that continuously violating the rules as laid out in the Guidelines For Forum Conduct will get you banned on IRC and depending on your behaviour, possibly also on these forums.

Title: Re: Official HLP IRC-channel on Trial
Post by: Fury on November 23, 2006, 10:04:16 am
Trillian Preferences > Identities and Connections > Add new connection > IRC.
- EsperNET (or whatever you like to name your connection)
- chocobo.esper.net or whichever server is the closest to your location. http://www.esper.net/servers.html
- Bob-san
- Bob or whatever you like to put here.
- Bob or whatever you like to put here.
Select Change > Miscalleneous > tick Always show status window on connect creation > Save settings > Connect.

Once connected, type /j #hard-light and press enter.

It has been a slow start but today there has been about half-a-dozen people online at all times. Still, could be a bit more lively methinks. ;)

Definitely seems like it has a chance to catch on. It's nice to be able to chat in real-time once in a while, and there's already been a couple of nice discussions. It's pretty dead sometimes too, but that's to be expected when one part of the world goes to dinner and the other is still at work or sleeping ;) I plan to hang out in it whenever I'm online at least, even if there isn't always something going on.

I don't see the point in a HLP IRC.

All the half-decent HLPers inclined to IRC used to hang on #nodewar and have since migrated to #warpstorm.

This new place is just gonna fill up with n00bs and tards.

It says HLP is online but my button won't turn blue and entering the channel does nothing. I used espernet first then changed to dream as I am in PA...

Ok I'm new to IRC, having trouble figuring out how to get to the hard light channel... I got xchat, and I'm trying to figure out how to connect to the EsperNet network. What do I type in "Network" area? I went to the esper site and they had their servers listed (i.e. cosmos.esper.net) and I tried typing that it but it didn't work. Also, doesn't it matter which one I join?

Umm I should check out Xchat client again in order to provide more proper help, but all in all it shouldn't really matter which EsperNet server you join in. Since I can't remember how the interface on the Xchat was I'll provide you two simple but important commands which should get you started.

When you open Xchat... it most likely opens up an empty server windows which might have a typing area at the bottom of it.
Into that type and enter:

/server cosmos.esper.net

That should connect you to the EsperNet server, or one of them anyway. After some messages of the day etc. stuff type the next command:

/j #hard-light (or /join #hard-light)

And that should take you to the channel.

I've tried to connect to the IRC, but whichever program I use (I tried mIRC, Trillian and ChatZilla), it always refuses my connection.
For example, using ChatZilla I get:

[INFO]   Network view for “cosmos.esper.net” opened.
[INFO]   Attempting to connect to “cosmos.esper.net”. Use /cancel to abort.
[INFO]   Connecting to irc://cosmos.esper.net/ (irc://cosmos.esper.net/)...
[ERROR]   Connection to irc://cosmos.esper.net/ (irc://cosmos.esper.net/) refused. Reconnecting in 15 seconds.

When it reconnects, it disconnects again and so on.
What can I do?

If someone has any other suggestions go ahead, but for now I might even concider the problem being on the ISP end. Firewall for example.

Hmm you could try to connect on to some other most likely working IRC server... Quakenet could be a good one to test. Try connecting on to irc.quakenet.org
Title: Re: Official HLP IRC-channel on Trial
Post by: Dysko on January 04, 2007, 05:44:33 am
.... neither Quakenet works. :nervous:
I don't know what could be the cause of the problem. Surely it isn't the firewall: I have deactivated it.

At this point, my problem doesn't belong anymore to the "News & Announcements" board.
@Mods: would be possible to move this part of the thread to the general off-topic section?

I have no problem having your problem being discussed here either.

Now I must say that at this point I would suspect the ISP itself, even if it wouldn't be the case.

<chief1983>   the Media VPs take advantage of the changes that have been made to the game's graphics engine by the Source Code team.
<Thomas_>   does this work on linux? It says .exe
   <chief1983>   get the .jar
   <Thomas_>   i don't have java :(
<chief1983>   and run it with java -jar whatever.jar
   <chief1983>   or maybe --jar
   <chief1983>   oh
   <chief1983>   wine?
   -->|   RK_Lurks ([email protected]) has joined #hard-light
   <Thomas_>   i don't have wine either. :(
<chief1983>   Well, there's currently no easy way to get the files besides one of those, for linux
   <Thomas_>   oh.
   <Thomas_>   ok.
<chief1983>   You can manually figure out all the files to get
   <chief1983>   or install java first
   <chief1983>   I'd do the latter
   <Thomas_>   ok.
<chief1983>   What linux are you using that didn't come with Java?
   <chief1983>   Gentoo?
   <Thomas_>   idk
<Thomas_>   does FC 6 have Java installed?
   <chief1983>   It should
   <Thomas_>   oh
   <chief1983>   I'm pretty sure it's a default option
<chief1983>   you have access to a terminal?
   <chief1983>   run 'java --version'
<chief1983>   and see what it says
   <chief1983>   or 'which java'
<Thomas_>   it wants me to open it with the archive manager.
   <chief1983>   don't open it
<chief1983>   you need to just run it
   <chief1983>   it is an archive
<chief1983>   but you need to run it by hand in the console
   <Thomas_>   oh
   <Thomas_>   ok
<chief1983>   opening it will just show you the source code files
   <chief1983>   won't do you much good :)
<chief1983>   one more thing, I think you need to have the directory already existing before you run the installer
<chief1983>   wherever you're going to install it to
<Thomas_>   Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar
<chief1983>   so make a /usr/games/FreeSpace2 or whatever first and you should be good to go
   <chief1983>   hmm
   <chief1983>   agaffney
   <chief1983>   ping

<chief1983>   sorry working in the lab
   <Thomas_>   can i put it in home/Thomas/?
<chief1983>   you're the only other person in here I know knows more linux/java than me at the moment
   <chief1983>   yeah wherever should work
<chief1983>   Did you get it workin?
   <Thomas_>   no
   <chief1983>   ok
   <Thomas_>   java -jar FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar, right?
   <chief1983>   I believe so, yes
<chief1983>   make sure the console's directory is the directory it's in too
   <Thomas_>   hey!
   <chief1983>   if it's in /home/Thomas/Desktop or whatever, make sure you've cd'd to /home/Thomas/Desktop first
   <Thomas_>   it's working

Warpstorm IRC is a natural extension of the Rift, expect to get banned for no reason whatsoever, or because the op is bored, basically, when dealing with WS, expect the unexpected ;)

Mine blocks it too, so I VNC to my home computer.  Before that I set up an SSH tunnel to my home computer and set up a proxy in Chatzilla running on an XUL-Runner standalone.  I think X-Chat could do that too but Chatzilla seemed slightly less conspicuous.
