"Just because you buy a DVD to watch at home doesn't give you the right to invite friends over to watch it too. That's a violation of copyright and denies us the revenue that would be generated from DVD sales to your friends," said Glickman. "Ideally we expect each viewer to have their own copy of the DVD, but we realize that isn't always feasible. The registration fee is a fair compromise.
****ers.

Crikes. What a bunch of ****ish twatwits.
-
Let's drag them at the back of the sauna and give them a proper headshot... as we would say here.
-
[Edited out for great humour!!!]
;) @ Vyper ;7
-
<snip>
Shh, this is comic.
-
Funny part is, I wouldn't put it past them.
-
Why not. They've got the ball well and truly rolling now. Why not see how far they can push it?
-
"You can't watch TV at home, says MY PA!"
is what I thought this thread said at first!
-

The scary thing is, I had no trouble believing it. Er, until I read it again.
In my defense, I was getting ready for 5s. :)

In the future everyone will have a DRM chip embedded in their brain. If you so much as look at copyrighted material your brain will contact a media industry database and an appropriate sum will be deducted from your bank account. Should your bank account not hold sufficient funds the offending senses will be temporarily blocked to protect copyright holders from copyright infringement.
-
That future is one where I start beating everything I see with a baseball bat.

For some reason I'm reminded of the Syndicate Wars intro film. The civilians had chips in them...

there's still enough room there

The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29" with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon
how do you legally define "comfy" ? :doubt:
-
I typically support the MPAA in most aspects, but even this is a step too far.
And yes, before you get me on it, I know it's a joke. I never take anything slashdot has to say being worth beans unless there's a link involved.
-
Pay royalties to me, I'll get them to the MPAA! I'll even pay shipping and handling!
;7
-
If they manage to turn this into a law, ten the US is truely doomed.
-
This seems just waaaaay too far fetched... This is probably an idiotic question, but are slashdot.com and BBspot.com legitimate news sites? I'm having trouble believing this...
-
I would not put it past them either. Sounds typical of an American agency...living here, i know the type.
I thought this quote would be appropriate
"The state is the organization which, though it does small things badly, does large things badly as well."
-
So if you don't have any comfy chairs, it's not a home theater? And since comfy chairs are a matter of opinion, than I can honestly say that no chair/couch/futon is comfy. Yay!! Thesizzler saves the day!! :p
Seriously, I am moving to the UK. Or that one place that you can get 2mbps internet for a sandwich a month.
-
Go to a univ. and stay there forever, as a grad student, TA, teacher, then professor w/tenure.
as long as you dont show softcore porn in class and ask for donations to your church during a lecture, then youre good.
yes a teacher actually did that here.
-
I forgot that BBSpot is a satire site........
It's a joke guys.....
-
I'm still moving to that one place that you can get 2mbps internet for a sandwich a month.
-
I still think they would do that.
What place is that again?
-
I think its a load of crap.. :wtf:
-
It's totally fake, another pretty good joke from the guys at BBSpot. I remember an old joke from there where the guy wanted to overclock his outlets to get more power out of them. (Cause power sources in the US are rated at 60hz)
-
dont worry one day large groups of heroic people will stop the mpaa and the riaa.
people who drink rum and say argh! :D
-
The scarey part of this is, MPAA just might go for that!
-
If it's fake, stop giving them ideas for gods sake!
-
as long as you dont show softcore porn in class and ask for donations to your church during a lecture, then youre good.
It's my understanding that you may do one or the other in class but not both :p
-
as long as you dont show softcore porn in class and ask for donations to your church during a lecture, then youre good.
Yes. Softcore isn't even educational.

hardcore porn on the other hand, well a little more educational, at least goatse man gives you a lesson in rectal anatomy :D
-
Can we stay on topic please, or I'll have to lock it.
-
Is it sad that a fair number of you are willing to believe it?
Not sure what that says about the state of the state...
-

No! They can't shut down the net! Crap. I have to get downloading porn. Fast!
-

don't know what planet you live on but slashdot is one of the oldest tech news sites around, however this article was tagged "Satire"
-
Whew...So then this isn't real. Although we had better hope that the MPAA doesn't read that. They might get an idea... :nervous:
-
They already tried this, remember? It was in response to this thing called the "VCR".
-
Is it sad that a fair number of you are willing to believe it?
Not sure what that says about the state of the state...
Oh the state of the state is baaaad. Thats why i want to do my grad school out of the US.
They would try it. Lets disable their sensors.
-
I still can't believe people think this was a true topic. BBSpot is purely fictional.
What I can't believe either is the shock factor the MPAA and RIAA have given people these days. The reactions in this thread show the actual power those groups have over everyone now. Look at the paranoia flying in this thread, then take a look at the casual computer user. Many of them would be afraid to type the word "bittorrent" into google. If it's one thing they've done right, it's to put fear into the hearts of computer users world wide.
-
i think anger would be a more appropriate word than fear
-
It says as much about any power they have as it does about the willingness of a mob to follow the scent of blood ;)

Quite true, but fear also motivates people to get off their asses and do ****.
