Title: Off for three months
Post by: Black Wolf on November 29, 2006, 01:27:13 am
Some of you will probably already know, but I've got vac work up north for the next three months. 'Twill be sweet - $200 a day, 9 on five off, accomodation, flights and meals paid, a week off for christmas and getting a tonne of useful geological field experience and, if I don't completely screw it up, I'll get a job with the company when I graduate. Which will be good, because these guys are going to be the biggest gold producer in Australia in ten years. They've got a crapload of land which is sitting on masses of ore with the kind of grades you just shouldn't be finding in Australia any more (one of the drill holes pulled up 800+ g/tonne - in  context, other companies regularly work open cut mines at 2 g/tonne).

So, net result is I'll probably have no or very limited net access for quite some time (There's satellite internet and wireless up in the camp, but I don't have a laptop and I'm not taking up my entire luggage weight dragging a massive great big tower and CRT monitor up there). As I said, I will get a week off for Christmas, so I'll post some pictures or whatever if anybody's interested - It's apparently amazing country up there. Anyway, I'll see all you guys in a few weeks, and then a few months (for the record btw the company I'm working for is GBS gold (http://www.gbsgold.ca), at the Union Reefs site).

I'd be damned interested in whatever you can post, as i'm aiming for the same line of work once i've finished uni. Might I ask; how'd you get the job lined up in the first place?

*Ghetto Wolf in that house*

But anyway best of luck to you, and don't try to smuggle some of that gold with you. ;)

Good catch BW, and Good luck :)

Just don't get pissed and fall down a mineshaft or anything, though I suppose a passing kangaroo might let the authorities know ;)

Kangaroos are like Dolphins. They'll eat you if they think no one is looking.

As long as you avoid this situation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1TmeBd9338&mode=related&search=), you should do just fine. ;)

And... now they're messing with me. Delayed me by 5 days so I don't leave til the 4th. But they've paid $1400 for the ticket (non-transferrable and all that jazz), so I strongly suspect I wont be delayed again...

Aaanyway...

Mef: Your uni, if it's any good, will be doing its damndest to set you up with vac work, so talk to your lecturers, check the noticeboards in your department etc. etc. (Noticeboard was how I got mine - the company e-mailed the geology department) Also go to career days, but you probably wont get anywhere with any of the big companies (BHP, Rio, Newmont etc.) unless your marks are top notch, and, to be frank, you probably don't want to.

Unless you get into a graduate program (which are good in terms of diversity of experience and ****, but with less than brilliant pay), any experience gained with a small company is going to be of a higher calibre than at a big company because there're fewer geos and you're generally doing more interesting, diverse work. Moreover, smalll companies mean you can access the upper echelons easier, both in terms of talking to them and getting promoted (eventually). Basically, I've heard only bad things about most of the bigger miners. As for finding work after Uni, beleive me - If you graduate within the next... five or so years, and get some kind of field experience through vac. work, you'll not have any trouble. The guy who interviewed me reckons that GBS could put on a dozen geos tomorrow if they could find them, and the situation is the same all over australia (and likely to stay that way for quite some time).

As for nuggets and the like, well, I doubt it. There's a little bit of quartz vein deposit, but it's mostly distributed sulphide stuff. Basically, it looks like a very boring, very heavy black rock. But you can make gold out of it.

Hey everybody, I'm sitting here, in the doorway of my room, letting the air conditioned air out and the multitude of bugs in so I can post this (the crappy camp wireless doesn't penetrate rooms built to be essentially big fridges)... so, yeah, um, savour the moment people.

Tis awesome up here - anyone who gets the chance to come to Australia should ignore Sydney and do the whole North west thing - start from Darwin and head for perth. Seriously, it's fanfriggentastic up here. The weather's brilliant all year round, which attracts backpackers all year round, which keep the pubs open til 2 AM all week long. Good little town.

I've got to ask; what is it exactly you do while you're up there?

Well, I've been put into ResDef (resource definition)so far I've mostly done two things - sitting on the RC Rig IDing the rock chips as they come up (the idea being I can spot ore and tell them when it's safe to stop drilling), and logging the backlog of diamond core. So far, the majority of the core logging has been structural, which basically involves counting and measuring fractures and bedding angles, which is boring as all hell, but as of today I'm starting lithological logging, which is proper core logging (i.e. looking at the geology, identifying the units etc. etc.).

However, well before I'm finished up here (I fly back to Perth on the 23rd of February) we'll have run out of core and stopped the RC drilling for awhile, so hopefully I'll be getting put into exploration, which they're forming as a new, separate department, which'll mean getting out into the field properly and doing some mapping.
