Title: Need help with a model
Post by: Starman01 on December 02, 2006, 08:17:55 am
Hello,

I'm currently trying to find my way back into modelling, but something's fishy here.

I created this model here, but the right part (with the white circle around it) has no collission detection ingame and I can't figure out why. There seem to be no face flipped, and PCS doesn't complain. Besides that, I used that type of intersection pretty often, and never had problems

I seperated that part, and tried to convert it alone, and the same happens. Here is the part of the model,
can someone please help me to figure out the problem ?

Thanks in advance :)

First question - are you 100% certain that all the vertices are welded together and there's no holes leaking the "solid" out of it anywhere?

Actually that's my only question since it's the only possible thing I can think of. :-\

Yep, its closed. It consists out of many objects, all are solid. Just the top and the bottom part have that intersection I did with a truespace boolean operation. But normally, one single boolean per object is no problem.

Truespace usually starts to mess things up when you do more than one boolean to an object.

:bump:

No one here able to help me ? Please don't let this nice model die. Pretty please :)

Is it supposed to be one solid model? It's made of several subobjects glued together. The antennas(?), their bases, the upper and lower main sections, the thin block in the middle, the four large bumps and the small bump on the narrow side.

Hmmm, that's not good, I tried joining the three main chunks together and the geometry borked itself...

Solution, BEFORE joining the three big parts, select the middle thin bit, rightclick the Object Tool (white arrow) button to open the object properties panel and set its Z dimension to .800 Then it will boolean join cleanly with the upper and lower chunks.

If you intend to boolean this whole part together, all four antennas and the upper antenna bases need their positions adjusted so they actually intersect the other parts. After joining it all it would still Decompose (the disjointed figure button) into the main section, the upper antenna bases and all the antennas. So just adjust the Z position of those parts a bit.

I think I got it. ;)

It appears that the middle indention on the head was corrupted, so I had to take it out. I also "bridged" everything to together(Wings tool for connection). BTW, Wings owns TS. :D

Not that I want to be ungrateful :) But in the updated model the middle intake/intersection is missing.
This is how it is supposed to look like :

I think that this intersection is actually a part (or the main reason) of the problem, but it's supposed to be there.
I will miss something in the model when I have to do it without that. Can you try to use wings to take this feature over ?

And you are right, Truespace is a pain in the arse, but I'm just to lazy to learn another modelling program again :)

Yeah, thats what I said in my reply, see from your pics in TS it looks good, but in wings I could see that it was currupted. But, I can add it back very easily. I will warn you tho, that part will need retexturing.

EDIT, here you go :)

Also, if you know TS, then it will be very easy to learn Wings, since the concept is just about the same. However the differences is amazing, the "connect" and "bridge" tools own TS by themselves, and thats not counting the UV mapper and such.

Thanks. Now I just need to find a way to make it work in TS. I can texture it, but I can't see the textures :D

Stupid TS  :doubt:
