Title: need a model
Post by: Bobboau on December 02, 2006, 03:51:21 pm
to test some code changes I have in the works, I am going to need a fighter model with the following requierments:

it must have at least one subobject setup (in terms of it's point of rotation) to rotate about at least one axis
this subobject must be an engine

more subobjects are welcome, but I need at least one that can rotate about either the x or y axis, if you want to setup additional subobjects so there is like a moveable pylon that allows both rotations that would be nice, but not needed.

you have untill I get done with school and get my power back to get this done, I promise your model will be something that gains you a lot of fame if you get it done, because it will be linked to every time someone wants to explain how this new code feature works, and that is likely to happen a lot giveing the neatness of this new feature.

look in the hard light forum for the topic titled 'Ice' if you want to know why I haven't answered any of your questions.

Are we talking something like a propeller or helicopter rotor?

Since you were sorta vague, here's a crappy helicopter.

Link to POF. (http://www.game-warden.com/narfin/models/helo.pof) I just saved it after I converted it, so you'd need to fill in any special properties and whatnot.
Link to COB. (http://www.game-warden.com/narfin/models/helo.cob) And here's the cob if you want it for some reason.

no, like an engine pod that would pivot to direct thrust in a particular direction, although an inclusion of rotars inside would be acceptable.

I had a feeling this would have one post from someone who didn't understand what I needed, realy people this will make it a lot easier for me to make something very cool for you that extends well beond the obvius implementation I have here, this is simply one application for a totaly diferent form of submodel animation.

Something akin to a Firefly's engines then?

yes, that would be a good example.
if you want to do something more elaborate than that go ahead, but, that's all I need, well, and I need it to look decent so it's not such a pain to debug. :)

are you talking trust gimballs?

if so i might have an old low-poly model i made for descent 2 awhile back, it has four 1 axis nozzels, which can rotate on the x axis so that they can rotate back or down. not the 2 axis gimbal which i hope youre developing. but it can give you a 1 axis test if thats what you need.

i converted this puppy for you. i used the max plugin, but i didnt set up any guns or engines or anything. not sure how you want them set up anyway. the engine submodels are all set up, theres a couple gatling sub-models too (only because i didnt feel like attaching them). this is one of the seldom seen few descent models ive made. anyway i havent tested it, so let me know if it dont work.

I'm not developing anything specific to thrusters, it's just the easiest thing to test it on.

I'm finaly getting around to implementing that "would be easy if we had a scripting system" animation system, sence we have a scripting system now.
WMC has made huge changes to the scripting system, I hope he adds them back in soonish.

I was thinking "What can I make, what can I make like this???" Then *WHAM!* I remembered this thing I did in November, 2001... :)

The engine gimbals on a horizontal axis and the ends of the rearward pointing arms with the fins are meant to rotate around their longitudal axis a bit.

The reason it's named Squeeze is because I modeled it on the twist off top of a bottle of Squeezit brand fruit-ish flavored drink.  :D
Never got around to fixing the axes for the swivelling end/fin things but the engine axis is in place. 'Course it'll need turned the left way for use with FS, UV mapped etc...

Whatever und vichever... I give it to the FS modding community to whatever with!
