Title: Concept: beam Turret
Post by: Turnsky on December 03, 2006, 01:43:53 am
we've all seen them, especially on the refitted orion class ships, where the beam cannons on 'em were still using the base plasma cannon turrets.
which struck me as rather inacurrate, if the orion was refitted for the task of utilising the latest weaponry, it should at least reflect this much.. and hence:

i'm no modeler, nor a modder, i made this purely in DOGA, but, i know a few of you could make this concept at least a working reality.

It looks pretty cool, but the pipes might be hard to animate, and I'm not sure how well it would fit on an orion. I don't think I'd be able to get used to it.

WARNING TERRIBLE ASCII ART FOLLOWS

Use the same turret base, but instead of

     _||_||_||_
    /               \
  /                  \   } capital01-06a.pcx

use

      beam4.pcx
          V

    _/____\_
   /               \
  /                  \   } capital01-06a.pcx
/                      \

Looks okay but also not a huge drastic change. Could also be used like:
    _______
   /               \- \
  /                  \ \   <-beam4.pcx
/                      \-\

  ^^^^^^^^
  capital01-06a.pcx

The last one is also used on Hamano's GTD Orion Phase II (not the railguns, the normal BGreens), and they look and function great.

You need those fixed beams then, like on the Mjolnir, no? So that the turret has to do all the aiming, da?

It would also do good, as since it's not multipart it could also be mounted on the sides.

Multiparts can now be mounted on the sides. (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,43271.0.html)

pipe or no pipe, either way it makes more sense than using plasma cannon turrets as beam cannons, particularly three barreled ones.

It looks like the cannons from Serenity. Shiny.

What's up with the cannons on the Orion? Why do they sit upright when they're off-line? It'd be easier to have the barrels parallel to the ship....

Because straight up is the natural center for whatever motors are driving the turrets. Also, straight up offers the smallest average turn time to any possible position.

That would actualy be 45 degrees up.

The real reason is that that's how the engine works with turrets. You can change the default using animations though.

Take a look at mediavps... inside the vp files there ought to be 'turretangle-shp.tbm' or something

Alternatively take look at FSwiki
http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Animation_Code#Setting_Turret_Angle

That is simply added to the turret entry in the ships.tbl (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Ships.tbl). Only multipart turrets may be animated.

Questions.

1.Is this beam going to standing on a stork with a bit of pipe that is connected to the ship like its pictured in modding?
2.Or is it going to be connected to the ship hull like you see on the orion destroyer(no stork)?

probably its hull-hidden beam - its delicate construction wouldnt survive open battle -->wires, pipes, coils, cooler...
and this is only my concept; wont see it ingame

Wasn't it that discussion on a Mk II Ursa? I seem to remember a tangent involving fold-out weapons pods on the wings.
