Title: Game error
Post by: spzattk on December 03, 2006, 05:24:00 pm
When I start the game, it starts fine, but when I click to start a mission I get this message:

Quote
Error: Could not load WarpMap01 anim file

File:C:/temp/fs2_open_3_6_9.rc7dot8/code/Fireball/FireBalls.cpp
Line: 697
[This filename points to the loacation of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:

Use Ok to break into Debugger, Cancel exits.

I downloaded the source code project from here: (I'm not using the debug version)
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html

I installed the game with the three disks.

Also: When I look at some of the ships (in the tech room, before I start the mission) they're invisible (except for the lights)

I'm doing this on an older computer, it has an NVIDIA TNT2 model 64.
In the open launcher, in the video tab, graphics are set to Direct3D8, but I also tried OpenGL and got the same results

Please help.

Therein lies your problem methinks.

The TNT is too old a card to run FS2_Open since we went over to Hardware Transform and Lighting (HTL)

Is that why there are error messages?
So should I uninstall it, or is there a way to make it work still?

Well while FS2_Open won't work FS2_retail should so if you've never played before you're not completely out of luck. Instead of running the SCP launcher you should run the Freespace2.exe.

That will allow you to play FS2 as it was when released in 1999. Not as pretty as with SCP but it was a damn pretty game back then so it's still not ugly now :)

Darn, I thought the new graphics would work. Oh well, the normal freespace 2 works, and I'll be fine with that.

Thanks

Actually now that I come to think of it you may actually not be suffering from the problem I thought.

SCP doesn't support the TNT2 so if you crash out after a shockwave or when a beam fires I won't be surprised but I reckon the crash you're getting at the moment is actually due to you not having ticked the Enable JPG/TGA Textures box in the SCP launcher.

I have no idea if ticking that box will make the game playable using the SCP. My bet is that you'll crash out when the Psamtik opens fire in the first non-training mission but feel free to try it :)

These are the boxes I checked:
enable specular
enable glowmaps
enable enviroment maps
enable jpg/tga textures
Stops fog intersect hull

I'm not sure if I should uncheck some of those, or check additional ones.

The only real problem is that I can't see the ships (they're invisible, but I can see the engines)
and this when I start a mission:

Do I have to install any additional things? I used the installer in Turey's thread.

You should probably download RC7.9x (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/testing/rc7dot8.rar) and use those .exes instead. I just haven't updated the installer to use 7.9x because I'm waiting for 3.6.9 Release.

Could you put up a pic of your Freespace2 folder and your mediavps folder?

In that case it probably is your graphics card and I think you're stuck with retail only I'm afraid.

Or get a new card.

I tried to introduce a friend to the game, but I think we had it worse: the "FREESPACE 2 SCP" in the loading screen came out as a white box. When we got to the menu, every word was white in colour. Mainhall - completely white and unusable.

Similar card, either a TNT or a TNT2, I forgot. (http://209.85.12.236/5024/118/emo/bangwall.gif)
