Title: What Is Your Musical Guilty Pleasure
Post by: redmenace on December 10, 2006, 11:12:10 am
This is a play on the gaming thread. But like it says what music do you hate to admit you like. Here is mine: Dune: Hand in Hand [Rave from the late 1990s Germany]

I freely admit everything, and have no shame. So there isn't one, really. But a short list of what somebody here will doubtless view as horrible sins follows.

D12 (Instigator and Fight Music are marvelous for when you're feeling maleviolent and decide to take it out on some helpless newbies online.)
Eminem
Two-Mix (JPop ftw.)
The Fray (Only a couple of tracks, to be honest. How to Save a Life is the only one I listen to with any regularity.)
Linkin Park (Well, some. I've kinda grown out of a lot it, since I'm not as emo as I was in highschool. I'm still hunting for a particular mix of My December though.)
Limp Bizkit
All kinds of '80s stuff. (I've been known to sing along to Take My Breath Away and several things by Phil Collins on occasion, though very softly. If that doesn't scare you ****less, you're not human.)
Bits and pieces of the Intial D soundtrack. (Stay is the only one to which I remember the name to off the top of my head, but there are four or five more. Couple more that are rap in Japanese, too.)
Yukarie (Japanese jazz; did the ending for Blue Submarine #6 if you saw that.)
Paul Oakenfold
Darude
Sailor Moon soundtrack (FEAR THE MAGICAL GIRL SHOWS.)

Well, to qualify that statement, I live in south Texas where the benighted population at large is under the shared delusion that Garth Brooks was God's gift to music.  Well, that part that speaks English, anyway.

I have a small list  :nervous:

Ayumi Hamasaki(JPop)
Linkin Park
Classical(Richard Wagner, for example, and some did mention unenlighted times we live in, that explains this best)
As I Lay Dying+Demon Hunter(Christain rock bands...As I'm an atheist)
And that one song on the commercial for those blue underwear(with the fruit people) that sounds like coldplay, I love that freaking song damnit! >_<

And I listen to metal, techno, and EBM >_< generally and unabashedly.

Oh and Dr. Dre(The Chronic 2001)....But that I'm not ashamed of, all my rockers friends listen to that....It's the Chronic, it's pack a bowl music  :D

Lots of video game music, especially in piano. People hear it and are like "what's this?" and then I have to explain its from a video game and blah blah blah.. and they're just like "oh.... I see...."

And techno.

Seconded.  I never really understood why a lot of people like it either, unless you speak the language.  Though I'm sure that language has nothing to do with why people like it,meaning that they may not be able to understand Japanese and listen to the lyrics.  Some people, myself included, probably like the sound of the Japanese language, the flow and the sound of the words.

as far as coutry goes i like the old skool stuff, like johnny cash and hank williams. all modern country music talks about is bull sex and killing muslims. old country was about suffering, not how big the tires on your truck are.

i also hate jpop. i have nothing against foregn language music. listen to metal in german, norwigian, finnish, sweedih, gaelic, spanish, potugeese and dutch, to name a few and i avoid domestic bands like i avoid domestic beers. even the metalish jpop reminds me of glam metal, which i hate just as much. sence i dont mind the japaneese language so that means that its the pop aspect i hate. japan took the us's ****ty aproach to music, subtract art and add profit. jpop is taking a crap all over the good aspects of japaneese culture. it must be stopped for the sake of the japaneese people!

I'll grant you that.  I'm not a fan per se of old country, but it doesn't make my ears bleed like the stuff everyone around here listens to today.

Right or wrong, I kind of make a distinction in my head between "country" and "folk music."  The former with it's fake twang, lyrics a 12-year-old could write, and entirely predictable song structure...  well, you get the idea.  I can appreciate the latter though, even though I'll never actively seek it out.  A lot of older country music (Johnny Cash is a good example) really seems to fall in that category to me.  I'm trying to come up with some other examples, but the only one that's coming to mind at the moment is the band my Uncle started briefly about 15 years ago.  No chance in hell anyone outside of Duncan, Oklahoma will have heard of them.

Funny, most of my music happens to consist of Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Trace Adkins, and George Strait with very little Hank Williams or Johnny Cash.  I don't mind listening to old country, but I mostly throw on one of Chesney's CDs when I'm relaxing (he does some terrific soft songs) or some Adkins/Keith CDs when I'm in the car and not listening to the radio (which is often tuned to the local country station).

Funny thing is I live in central Indiana, which isn't exactly a country music hub like Texas or Tennessee.

It's shame they broke up. What's even more shameful is that I saw them when they were opening for NIN, and I did not appreciate their music then. This seems to be a problem for me. I'll see a band live, and then get hooked on them after the fact.

Gosh... I think mine would be... erm... certain boy bands.  Lets face it... the people who write their music make catchy ****.  This mostly applys to the Backstreet Boys.  God help me.

Thankfully, I don't own their CDs or anyof their MP3s, so I don't indulge much, unless my g/f forces me too.  XD

Other than that, I listen to everything under the sun.  XD

I have to say that my fav song is 99 Red Balloons in the original German Dance mix.  (Slightly sped up for more fun XD)

I also listen to JPop... studied Japanese for awhile, but certainly cannot understand the songs.  Just like the language.  Also tend to enjoy the fact that I CAN'T understand the lyrics... I just get to hear the tones in the voices and listen to the raw energy projected by their voices into the music.

God did I just sound new-age or what?  O.o  Raw energy inherant in music?  *shakes his head*

Youre ashamed of listening to Rammstein? Just wait until I tell my german freinds, theyll chase after you with dildos and flamethrowers. Seriously, Rammstein are one of the most badass bands youll find out there.

I saw Dragonforce live just a few months ago. The show was good but their mixing was horrible. Could hardly hear Herman Lee over the ****ing drum + bass.

LOL I never said im ashamed of Rammstein. They're awesome. I listed all the bands i like, and in no particular order either.

Nightwish are wicked, and that whore from Evanescence has -NOTHING- on Tarja.

Pity that Tarja left the band. She moved on to greater things, and has become pretty much 'THE' voice of finland. (at least i think the bands from Finland )

So in other words you completely missed the point of the topic? :p

As for me I've been listening to a lot of Skindread recently. I don't know if that counts as a guilty pleasure cause I'm not ashamed of liking them so much as keeping the volume down to stop getting :wtf: looks from everyone.

Yes you're quite right they are from Finland. And on this spring (or so) the band should be announcing the new lead singer, but this time background as an opera singer is not a requirement. So let's see what they can come up with.

Dragonforce (Power metal band . Gets alot of its songs from sega games  )

Nightwish (Gothic metal band with a great vocalist who sounds like an entire opera. Great guitar too)

Rob Zombie , Godsmack,  Rammstein, Static-X

And some trance / dance / Hard NRG when the mood gets me.

Youre ashamed of listening to Rammstein? Just wait until I tell my german freinds, theyll chase after you with dildos and flamethrowers. Seriously, Rammstein are one of the most badass bands youll find out there.

To be honest they kicked Tarja out because she was like an uppity spoiled rich ***** - and her interviews did not really help her image, because she acted like uppity spoiled rich ***** and attention-whored EVERYWHERE after Nightwish booted her.

The one time Nightwish pissed me off was in the "Wish I had an Angel" video where the guitarist and backup vocalist dude had two braided ropes of ugly hair coming out of his nasty beard.  :ick:

I don't have any according to your definition. Now if by "guilty" you meant ashamed since most people just wouldn't understand, that's different.  :D

I don't like most Jpop, but Fire Bomber & Basara rock (Yoshiki!)
and a lot of 70's bands (Styxx, Kiss, Toto, ABBA, etc)...

FIRE!!!
