Title: Problems with 3.3 (Missing Ships)
Post by: freespacegundam on December 10, 2006, 01:24:55 pm
I'm having a bit of a problem with some of the ships in TBP not showing up, either in FRED or in game.  The object is created and I can target it, but it appears as a black void with neither model nor textures.  Specifically, the Whitestar, Bluestar, and Victory are all not showing up in the game when it loads.

Turn on TGA and JPG textures.

That often cures problems like that one.

Unfortunately not this time. The ships still don't show up in FRED.  This really bites for mission making purposes.

How did you turn on the textures for FRED. The launcher doesn't set the command line for FRED in case you didn't know. You have to do it via the command line by editing a shortcut (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/fredopentech.html#flags)

For some reason that's not working either.  It won't even let me add the option for the textures without screaming at me.  I followed the guide but everytime I try to make the changes it says the path is invalid and doesn't let me save the change.

Strange. The JPG/TGA switch shouldn't be necessary as all the textures are in DDS format. How exactly did you install TBP ?

Post the exact error message, or even better a screenshot showing your TBP folder in Windows Explorer. I'm guessing you moved something someplace it doesn't belong.

I downloaded the installers and ran the 3.2 one first, then the upgrade, then the patch.  Here's what my folder looks like.

I'm not actually getting any error message with the ships not appearing, they just don't show up.  The other error message simply states that the name in the target path is invalid.

Hmm, everything seems to be in order. Try running TB with the 3.6.7 build that came with the 3.3a patch, to see if the problems still occur. This way we'll see if it's a build-related problem or a data-related problem. I'm running 3.6.9 RC7 without problems.

I'm still having the same issue.  The problem isn't with the actual build itself I think, but something to do with the newer models.  I've noticed that all the older models from 3.2 work fine, but not the ones contained in the 3.3 upgrade.

Ah stupid me, I should have looked closer. You seem to have missed to install the 3.3 base update, you went from 3.2 base to the 3.3a patch directly. When you install the 3.3 update the big main vp will be called "B5-Core-3_3.vp".

That's why you're missing the stuff from 3.3, but you see the ship entries because the 3.3a patch contains an updated ships.tbl. But the models and maps are in the 3.3 update.

Heh, I just discovered this myself last night.  I thought something was up since it was only those ships that weren't being displayed, so I ran the install again.  Presto, it worked.

The only bad thing is FRED still doesn't like to display B5 or the Narn space station without screaming at me that there's too many normals.  Oh well, at least I've got the Whitestar back, which was all I really wanted for mission purposes.

Many thanks to you both for your assistance.
