Post by: Thorn on December 26, 2001, 08:58:00 pm
I've been looking for some new music recently, and I thought this mught be a good way for everyone to find some stuff they might not have heard.
Post the name of one of your favorite songs (and who did it obviously), and what type of music it is.
Guess I'll start it off....
The Tragically Hip - Fully Completely, theyre a rock band out of Ontario...

I listen to Bon Jovi. Just because their early albums are older than me is not a legit point.

but the fact that he's a may moon is.

Tech-Industrial stuff is the way to go.

To say I cant stand 'metal' would be wrong..but I certainly don't like listening to it one bit.

Anyway Wevil, if you call bon jovi metal, I personnaly come to your home and torture you till you retract what you said  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Anything from Smashing Pumpkins
Anything from HUM (remember them? they had a one time hit with Stars ("she thinks she missed the train to mars, she's out back counting stars"), HUM is really good as the music rocks and they lyrics are mysterious, almost sci-fi-ish).
[south florida pimp] Nonpoint [/south florida pimp]
Tanya Donelly (and/or Belly)

Other than that... I need new music.

Joe.

Did it ever occur to you that they don't sell millions of records because they're crap? Also, name that include the word Queen invoke images of homosexuality and transvetitism, especially in predominantly male groups. This is problem for some people. Hehe I pretty much only like soundtracks from computer games; FS1, FS2, Deus Ex and a few others have very good music IMHO. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Not to me.  Plenty of crap bands/pop groups sell many records in spite of crapness - why should it be a barrier to success?

Good band/album list (27/12/01)

(all Indie)

Starsailor - Love is Here
The Charlatans - Tellin' Stories, Wonderland, Us and Us Only

Paul Weller - Wild Wild Wood, Heavy Soul, Days of Speed (live album   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) )

Ocean Colour Scene - Mosely Shoals (3rd best album of the 90's IMHO), Marchin' Already, One from the Modern

The Verve - Urban Hymns (the album of the last decade), Northern Soul (toally underrated)

Coldplay - Parachutes (2nd best album of the 90's)

The Seahorses - do it yourself

Soulwax - Much Against Everyones advice

The stone Roses  - Second coming

Supergrass - In it for the Money, Untitled (aka Supergrass)

Ian Brown - Golden Greats, Music of the Spheres

I'd advise using a Napster-esque program to dL a track before deciding what to buy (if any), though.

I think I was misunderstood. I don't particularly care what people listen to (as long as it's not Westlife). The simple fact is that they don't sell millions because people don't like their music and seen as the meaning of 'crap' is determined by current trends, saying that a low selling type of music is crap is correct regardless of presonal preference (unless you take it as a personal view, which isn't how I meant it).

On a seperate note: Beethovens 5th, the Fur Elise and the William Tell Overture are all good choices.

Why these bands don't sell millions of records have many different factors. First of all some of these bands are not around anymore (Pixies and Kyuss). Secondly none of these bands where part of a big trend plus none of these bands are on a major label.

But I don't care if they don't sell millions of records and just because a band sells millions of records that automaticlly (sp) doesn't make them to **** . Hell, I have several records from band that have sold millions of record. I think people should listen to whatever they want, but if you look a farther than the top20 list you can find really good music.

You're welcome, but I must add that - IMHO - only their first album rocked. The rest were ok, but nowhere near the quality that they are capable of.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I've recently discovered Jimmy Eat World; their Sweetness song is cool.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif)

I didnt mean to say that I have a problem with music representing cultural creeds and sections (anons referral to gay music)

I also did not mean to say bon jovi was "metal"

"metal" to my mind brings the horrible sounds of "pantera" "kill to this" "sikth" and all the other horrible screaming tracks that sound the same ***TO ME***.

Im sure most of you think trance is just a thumping base with little else.

In the way of specific bands...hrrm.

ELectrostatic
Trance Control
Sonic mayhem
NIN
Manic Street Preachers
Jean_micheal Jarre
Vangelis
Dead Can Dance
Orbital
Paul Oakenfold
DJ Tiesto
Chemical Bros
Enya
Manifest Vision
Underworld
Rob Zombie
Radiohead
Third eye blind*
Marilyn manson*
Gravity Kills

loads of stuff.

* denotes stuff ive stopped listening to much in the past 2 years

Does anyone else know them?
