Title: Model contest 2.0
Post by: Shrike on December 05, 2001, 02:32:00 pm
Anyone interested?   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

There's been a lot of growth in the modelling here, so how many of you guys want to try your hand at another one, hmm?

What say, oh.... one month, judging in the first week of january.  Or would people want more time?

Alright, how about Renders for the end of January, and Models by the end of February?  We'll do voting at two different times.

Renders can be of anything, as long as they're at least vaguely space-sim related, models, as before, must be original.  Also, this time we aren't going to accept ones from pre-existing mods.

Is a high poly manticore made from scratch considered a new or an old model? Is it possible to use fs2 models in the renders, and so on?

No movies.  I only expect we'd get a couple, so let's stick to still shots, that way more people can participate.  Plus, movies take a lot longer to do.

Secondly, a high-poly Manticore model would indeed be considered an 'existing' model.  I'm trying to get you guys to be creative here.  Plus if I let people do high-poly version of FS ships, that kind of lets the door open for models of any other ship out there as well.....

Ahh, and these limitations are only for the modelling portion.  Renders can be with whatever models you can get your paws on.  So go wild.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

umm I like that!
Also I think the model should be the same for all.
 As a client description.
Obviously it will be a craft.
Let someone  deceide the specifics: size class and armament, for all.

Like that it will have to be a new design. and one that can be compared and scored easier.
Ohh yes... something to stop the smart ones... it has to have a specific insignia. Same for all.  Something like: MOD-COMP2 text has to be integrated in the design.

Hang on...  that was published  before I posted this so I guess only low poli FS1 or 2 theme is valid.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

a high poly manticore is obviously for renders  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

How about a mission contest as well? While this is not strictly a focus of HLP, missions and campaigns are the ultimate aim, for which mods are created. It would have to be entirely mod free, and could be judged on things like difficulty, storyline, background, playability and fun. The only problem would be the amount of time judging it would take.

But polygons are better.  After all, detail in the real world isn't cause by textures but by shapes.    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Besides, 23.5 kilopolys is peanuts.  I can break that on my first run through a model before I get to the detail.....

So the breif is;
MODEL CONTEST

a model created from anytime now until the submission date, high or low poly.

RENDER CONTEST

any model(s) arranged in an aesthetically pleasing manner.  Lighting, texturing and composition will form a big element in this.

Is this correct?

------------------
have you ANY idea of how much trouble you're in?
assault on a police officer.
Theft of police property.
Illegal possesion of a firearm.
FIVE counts of attempted murder.
That comes to...

twenty-nine dollars and 14 cents.
cash, cheque or credit card?

no, then do like games Workshop during the gamesday (anyone knows what I'm talking about?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) )
They have a staff only category.

The idea is wayy cool but tell me this:
Are people who are rather adept at using a pencil & paper to make a concept piece allowed to challenge modellers during this contest (might make things interesting)?
Because i've got a few on hand to display (after xmas though) that should see a few good ones pop up   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I've also got one to challenge a renderer.
