Title: Starcraft
Post by: Sarafan on December 22, 2006, 12:58:50 pm
I recently picked my copy of Starcraft for another run, certain games no matter how old are simply the best. :D So, I had this idea, why not a FS mod for Starcraft? A Starcraft space sim, of course, something limited only to Protoss and Terrans, Zergs would be downright absurd to try to get into the game. There already are the ships for it (Wraiths, Scouts, Carriers, etc) and if needed, creating new ones wouldnt be hard with people here. The story would be simple to do too.

So what say you?

And even without a story, the ships would be cool. Terran ships would fit for terrans (d'oh) as they are. And little creative texturing and Protoss ships would be quite Vasudan like IMO...

I say

No Zerg? Awwww... :(

ScoobyDoo has been doing some great organic ship models, I bet he could do some decent Zerg ships if someone coaxed him into it. Besides, seeing the OverMind's massive Entire-Zerg-Swarm-Moving-Warp would be really cool!

Although... now I think about it, could the game engine even handle that many "ships" entering the play area at once?

Well, infected Terran and Protoss ships could be made to show the Zerg at least.

because the zerg are organic they do move, so how are you going to get a stationary moving object to become a living moving object?

Well, like I said, there wouldnt be any Zerg because of that, I dont think the game is nowhere near appropiate to do organic objects so getting a race like the Zerg into it would be impossible, I think.

However, showing infected Terran/Protoss ships would be possible, just showing small parts of the ship corrupted for example. Also, in the campaign Into the Depths of Hell, Noise is doing organic enemies called the nightmare (I dont know how they look like and dont know much about them), so infected ships could be done, its not the full Zerg but its something.

I would really like to see a protoss carrier taking on a terran battlecruiser, the yamato gun would probably be a beam like the one from the Sathanas (BFRed, right?).

it charges a massive orange ball of energy and then releases the enrgy round quickly.

this bit of organic into the ship sounds like homeworld: cata, the beast ships  :P

Orange? Its red, how can that be organic too?

The effect would be simple to do, it already has been done on a couple of campaigns, all that would be needed is to enlarge the beam.

So, I had this idea, why not a FS mod for Starcraft?

I think it would be the other way around since SC is impossible to mod.  I say go for it if you can find a way to mimic the zerg using the rigid bodies of FS.

I always wanted to see the Terran Battlecruiser anyway.

Yes, it is the other way around, I should've wirtten better, a Starcraft mod for FS (much like the Apocalypse Project for example).

AFAIK, there is only one SC mesh ever made , a Terran Battleship. But it was like 400k polys.

I've looked... SO far no one else makes SC meshes.

You wouldnt know where to find that, would you?

Hiya,

I had an idea about a SC/FS hybrid many, many years ago. I dropped it, for two main reasons. 1) I utterly, completely suck at modelling, and 2) if such a thing would be released, the Blizzard devi.. *ahem*, I mean, attorneys would have this place shut down quicker than you can say "zerg". FreeSpace 2 is freeware, StarCraft (any version) is most definitely not. When it comes to IP rights, Blizzard is almost worse than Derek Smart.
Anyways, I do have a half-finished thingie about somewhere, for the Descent: FreeSpace Demo (!). It does look kinda cool. All the parts that are in there, that is. As I said, I dropped it, mainly for not finding -- or being myself able to do -- a reasonable Wraith or Battlecruiser. There were some Wraiths and such over at Sci-Fi Meshes (http://www.scifi-meshes.com), but those were 3500+ polys. So I kinda forgot all about it. If it would be a doable do, it would be the kewlest evah. FreeSpace and StarCraft fit together perfectly.

Cordially,
~Selectah

That wouldnt happen, it would simply be a mod of Starcraft for FS, if Blizzard did things like that, there wouldnt be any mod for Warcraft 3.

Why not replace the Shivans with the Zerg?

Blizzard already did close some mods, e.g. a Starcraft-mod for C&C Generals. They don't feel so bad about a Starcraft-mod in WC3 because it's one of THEIR products you're doing the mod in. Although that doesn't fit for everything, they actually dislike people that convert WoW-models for WC3. That's why they don't support any mod site that allows this to happen.

Concerning the Zerg:
I don't know why all of you say there can't be any Zergs in space. They actually ARE flying in space (in Starcraft, of course), Blizzard even gives descriptions why they're able to survive there. Although they don't explain how something can move in space moving it's wings.  :wtf:

BTW i never said anything about zerg not being in space.

I didnt knew they close any mods, that sucks. I'm not saying that there cant be Zergs in space (they're fully capable of being there), I'm saying that it would be far too much trouble to try to mod any Zergs and get them ingame. Modding organic things are the most difficult to do as far as I know.

Hypothetically if someone were to make a project called starstuff or polycraft and never released screenies and had a trustworthy team... yadda yadda yadda...

But I'm not good with theoretical stuff... That's what Carter and McKay are for.  :D

If you don't have TV you're excused...

But if you have Sci-Fi Channel, SkyOne, or that other thing, then you're in danger of getting smacked with a Hatak.  :D

Two geniuses from SG-1/Atlantis...
