Title: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: Goober5000 on December 22, 2006, 07:07:35 pm
Main release:
Download the full version (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/3dactionplanet/hlp/hosted/fsport/downloads/releases/fsport3_0_4.zip)
Download the patch from version 3.0.3 (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/3dactionplanet/hlp/hosted/fsport/downloads/patches/fsport-patch-3_0_3-3_0_4.zip) (144 kb)
Download the patch from version 2.3 (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/3dactionplanet/hlp/hosted/fsport/downloads/patches/fsport-patch-2_3-3_0_4.zip) (21.0 mb)
Download the mission pack (http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/3dactionplanet/hlp/hosted/fsport/downloads/releases/fsport-missions.zip) (905 kb)

If you haven't used the Port before, you may want to download other files from the Port website (http://fsport.hard-light.net/).

I figured I'd post this as a stopgap solution until 3.1 comes out, since so many people were having issues with the ship class names.  This should fix that bug, as well as two other minor problems that I thought should be fixed.  For those of you who don't like FilePlanet, Wing Commander Saga has mirrored the downloads in one of the posts below.

Also, don't forget we now have a subforum for Silent Threat: Reborn. :)

Here's the latest version of the readme:

Quote
===< FREESPACE PORT TO FREESPACE 2 >===
        Version 3.0.4 12/22/2006
http://fsport.hard-light.net/
=======================================

This is a brand spanking new version of the FreeSpace Port that has been rebuilt from the ground up to provide you with the best possible FreeSpace 1 experience. :D We've abandoned the attempt to keep the Port compatible with the main FreeSpace 2 campaign (considering the now-common use of the -mod feature and the fact that several ship stats changed between FS1 and FS2) and turned it into its own separate mod.  We've re-imported the original tables and missions from FS1 with the absolute minimum changes necessary to get them working in FS2.  It's just about as close as you can get to playing FS1 without actually playing FS1. ;)

As with recent versions of the Port, this file contains only the core files needed to play, so you'll have to download the mission pack separately.  This was done to facilitate updates, since missions are changed far more often than core files.  You'll also have to download (or patch) sparky_hi_fs1 if you want to play in 1024x768 resolution or higher.

This version of the Port was specifically designed to play simultaneously on FS2 Retail and FS2 Open while at the same time taking advantage of the additional features in FSO whenever possible.  One of the benefits from this is the new way the music is handled.  Music.tbl will no longer cause crashes with retail, and switching to the FS1 music is as simple as adding the required music files... no table-swapping or mission editing required!

=< MEDIA ENHANCEMENTS >=

If you own FreeSpace and/or Silent Threat, you're in for a treat!  You can extract all the necessary files from the previous games and play the Port with full voice acting, command briefing animations, and music.  If you prefer, you can download them prepackaged from the FreeSpace Port website.

Copy these files:
FreeSpace\data\cbanim.vp to FreeSpace2\data\
*.mve (on the FS1 CDs) to FreeSpace2\

Extract these files, using Descent Manager's VPVIEW32:
*.wav from data\voice\command_briefings in FreeSpace.vp to FreeSpace2\data\voice\command_briefings
*.wav from data\voice\special in FreeSpace.vp to FreeSpace2\data\voice\special
*.wav from data\voice\briefings in voc.vp to FreeSpace2\data\voice\briefing
*.wav from data\voice\debriefings in voc.vp to FreeSpace2\data\voice\debriefing

NOTE that data\voice\[de]briefings was changed to data\voice\[de]briefing (without the S) in FS2.

=< CONVERTING FSMs >=

If you've FREDded or downloaded any missions for FreeSpace 1, it's quite simple to convert them to run on FreeSpace 2 using the Port.  Follow these steps.

1) Download and run a recent version of FRED2 Open.  Any version including and after 3.6.9 should work.
2) Select File->Import->FS1 Misson.  Select the mission or missions you want to import and the folder where you want to save them.  The conversion will take a short time (usually only a few seconds, but longer if you're doing several missions at once) so if you get a "This program is not responding" message, ignore it.

That's usually it!  If you get any "ship class not found" messages, you may have converted a mission in which the class names are slightly different in the Port.  For example, missions which used the "big blast" Faustus now use a regular Faustus with a special explosion.  The easiest way to fix this is to replace the ship class name in the original mission and reconvert using the steps above.

=< KNOWN ISSUES >=

Q: The ship listing in the Tech Room displays the wrong ships.
A: The best solution is to create a new pilot from the Pilot Select screen when you first start FreeSpace 2 (cloning your current pilot won't work).  This will reset the tech room so that the proper ships appear.

Q: Whenever I click on the weapons database, the game crashes.
A: This is a bug in retail FS2.  You can either use FS2 Open or visit the Port website for data on all the new weapons.

I didn't forget; I just didn't think it was necessary.  This is a bugfix release.  That'll be added in 3.1.

Man, I would love to play freespace 1 again (together with all the cool videos and commandbriefings).
One problem though, I only own the german version of the game and therefore some of the voiceline filenames don't match the original english version.

Is there anywhere a place/link where I can download the voicelines ?

Good Job, as always ^^. But what difference between the  3.0.3 and this version except the minor correction bug with tables ?

Because 3.0.4 is now the current version?

Good Job, as always ^^. But what difference between the  3.0.3 and this version except the minor correction bug with tables ?
The differences are described in the first post and in the readme:

They are, but most people who need them have already downloaded 3.0.3.  If they still need them, they are available from the website.

However, my filename was named fsport3-0-3.vp or similar. I changed it, but it was an interesting anomaly that broke the bat file.

I've just noticed that Inferno: Alliance has better models for a lot of FS1 terran ships. Are you planning to copy them to port?

If Woomeister agrees / helps it can be a huge nearly free improvement with little work?
Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: Goober5000 on December 24, 2006, 02:14:14 pm
The mediaVPs already have high-poly versions of a lot of FS1 ships.  If you activate the mediaVPs, you should see them.
Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: Trivial Psychic on December 24, 2006, 03:28:22 pm
ARSPR was referring to the cockpitted Valkyrie and Angel fighters, among others.  Those are NOT in the SCP Media VPs.  Since they aren't stock FS2, there's no guarantee that they'll be included in future SCP Media VPs.  You may wish to speak to Woo about possibly borrowing them for an HTL add-on for 3.1 or something.

Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: Trivial Psychic on January 02, 2007, 11:48:11 pm
Well, the only reason you're seeing HTL for Orion default, Bastion, and Galatea, is because someone made HTL versions with the proper nameplate textures in the media VPs, and you're using them behind the port VPs.  Since the Port is designed to support retail by default, it doesn't actually include any HTL ships, but you should be seeing those from any SCP MediaVPs you may be using, as indicated.  The only one you won't see is the HTL Lucifer, unless you have it placed in the Port/data/models folder.  I believe (though not on any confirmed or suggested info.) that Goob will introduce an optional upgrade with 3.1, which will either include HTL versions of the Terran destroyers with proper nameplates, or a special SCP-enhanced mission pack with texture replacement instances, placing nameplates on default HTL Orions, as well as perhaps Lightspeed's backgrounds.  Other HTL models or cockpitted models from INF:A may also fit into an optional HTL VP file, but for now hacking them in can do the trick.  I've done it myself.

If I explicitly follow the instructions in readme-patch.txt to update from 3.03 to 3.04, I end up with both a fsport3_0_3.vp and a fsport3_0_4.vp file in my fsport directory. Is this correct, or should I delete the former?

Hmm, just saw THIS (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.msg905770.html#msg905770), which indicates I should.

Hmm.  I guess you're right; if you follow the instructions to the letter, you end up with a copy. :)

Yes, you're supposed to delete the old file if the patch is successful.  I only specified copying because I didn't want anybody to lose their Port installation if the patch program corrupted the file.

The entire ShivanSPS fsport 3.0.4 install.
Download from Hunter's fs2downloads, 470MB 7zipped down to 227MB (http://huggybaby.fs2downloads.com/Fs1_port_3.7z)

(http://xs411.xs.to/xs411/07014/fsport304date.jpg)

MOVIES:
NEW! Running movies from a VP file! You can use Hunter's FS1 Cutscene Pack VP (http://www.fszmirror.com/files/FS1cutscenepack.vp). Put it in your "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Fs1_port_3" folder.

-OR-

Put the 10 FS1 cutscenes (from Megaupload) (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=T301ZT5I) in your "C:\Games\FreeSpace2\Fs1_port_3\data\movies" folder.

(http://xs511.xs.to/xs511/07014/FS1PortTheoramovies.jpg)

NOTE:
If you have a really old, slow computer, you may consider using the mve format cutscenes instead of the ogg's.
Download the FS1 mve format cutscenes from here (http://fsfiles.nukelol.com/), or get the fs1 mve files from filefront (http://files.filefront.com/fs1+movieszip/;5482460;;/fileinfo.html).

Can it get any easier? I think not!

No, well, this.... INF:A is becoming to me very confusing to me, their have new HTL models of already HTL maded ships, like the Apollo, and also they didt need anything in MediaVps, anyway, anything  in the port folder in my pack will be of Goobler and the people who make the HTL models of FS1 ships, there will be no any INF:A stuff, if someone wants to play which INF:A stuff their just need to add a name to the mod.ini.

Goob, there's a bug in tango_fs1.vp.  The animation cb_galatea.ani is corrupt somehow and switches to a full pink display at about frame 412.  You can also see some split and reverse color image of the GTA crest after the pink, but before the end of the ANI.  The original ANI didn't have the crest.  I found a working version of the ani from an older Port install, (2.3 I think) and it works fine, and in fact doesn't have the crest I mentioned, and also is only 499 frames long, versus the 500 of the corrupt version.  Now sure it that means much.

Installer is down until April 1st-ish. Bandwidth troubles.

Anyways, can you post a pic of your FreeSpace2 folder?

Weathers, I posted a screenshot at the top of this page (page 2) that shows exactly where the vp file goes, check it out. You don't extract it or anything, just drop it in the proper folder.

1) Create a folder called 'fsport304' in your main FS2 directory.

2) Throw all FSport files into it

3) Activate the mod in the 'mod' tab of the SCP launcher

Everything you tried to put into /FreeSpace2/ or /FreeSpace2/data/*/ should have gone in /FreeSpace2/fsport/ or /FreeSpace2/fsport/data/*/ , respectively.

1) Create a folder called 'fsport304' in your main FS2 directory.

2) Throw all FSport files into it

3) Activate the mod in the 'mod' tab of the SCP launcher

please don't use folder names other than fsport. If he ever uses the Installer, it'll put a second copy of the Port on his machine.

@weathers : take everything in fsport304 and put it in fsport, then delete fsport304.

You need to copy voc.vp from your FS1 installation into your fsport folder.

No.  put the .vp files into \FreeSpace2\fsport
If you have files that are not in .vp format, then they go into \data\models, \data\tables, etc, etc.

game chrashes when i put some of teh files of freespace1 into fsport just like u say. voc.vp didnt make any chrashes but no soudns are coming as well :( root.vp and fresapce.vp are causing the chrash when i put them under fsport folder. I've put the remaining 4 vp files tehre without any probelms, and any otehr non vp related fiels + teh voice fodler etc went under teh data folder of fsport. still no sounds :(

These should be in your fsport folder.  Nothing else.  (besides a data folder, FS will create that for you, but in the meantime, open it (go into the data folder) and delete everything except for the cache folder found there.

Ya, you can... you want the CDs, for retail (low-res), or FSPort, which is the same thing, except upgraded to SCP?  (Which is what I have in my directory above.)
EDIT: Try Nukelol.com's FS site (http://www.nukelol.com/fs) if you want the retail discs.  I would recommend FSPort, however.

I've worked with mod files before but from a diferente game (Dawn of War) so i have some knowledge of structures but this mod is diferent. Which files are need to to export from the mod tools to the folder FSPort? i have al the files .VP from the ZIPs in the FSPort folder but there isnt a recognition from the game campaign manager so im doing something wrong. If someone could explain what to me i would apreciated.

Thanks for the welcome

Welcome to HLP, Darknessknight.

Welcome to HLP. There are exits to the left and rear. Do not attempt to use them. Under your seat you will find empty beer cans, cookie crumbs, corpses of newbies, dog eared dungeon Porn mags left by Shrike... oh, and a Flamethrower. Unfortunately, we're out of napalm, so you'll have to bludgeon people to death with them.

In the event of serious conflict, there are plasma rifles in the forward locker, though these can only be opened by an Admin, [V], God, or Hyperintelligent shade of the colour Blue. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself crawling around in the ductwork, there's a better than average chance you'll encounter a Shivan. They're easy to spot with the five legs and all. If you're lucky, it's just Carl, who responds well to food rewards. If not, then at least you die quickly. Be aware that the entrance to the main control room is guarded by subspatial claymore mines.

Do not mention FS3. Karajorma's FAQ is your friend. Worship SCP team as Gods. Have a nice day.

Uhm, ok, let me try.

So, you have all the necessary FSPort vp files from a thread or the site? And they're all in their own folder (named FSPort or something like it) within the FreeSpace 2 main folder? Good. To be able to play FSPort, you have to open the Launcher, select the MOD tab, click on the Select MOD button, select the FSPort folder and hit OK. Then just start the game, create a new pilot for  the Port and select the correct campaign from the campaign room. That's pretty much it. Or was there something else going on here?

the mod.ini.

You should also have a file called mod.ini in your fsport folder... if it is not there, create it (txt file, rename it to an ini)

It should contain this:
Code: [Select]
[launcher]
infotext     = FreeSpace 1, now ported to run on the FreeSpace 2 engine.;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/;
forum        = http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/board,39.0.html;

[multimod]
primarylist  = ;
secondrylist = ,mediavps (or whatever name you gave the mediavps folder);

[settings]

then, you can play fsport with the mediavp goodiness.

Please do not use the obsolete tricky syntax you've posted for Secondary list. It was needed for old versions of Launcher. Launcher 5.5 do not need them any more. Use this syntax instead:

Code: [Select]
[launcher]
infotext     = FreeSpace 1, now ported to run on the FreeSpace 2 engine.;
website      = http://fsport.hard-light.net/;

secondarylist = mediavps (or whatever name you gave the mediavps folder);

[settings]

(secondarylist instead of secondrylist and no initial comma).

That was actually a straight copy from my .mod.ini... but okay, correcting all my .mod.ini's right now.
Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: jr2 on August 24, 2007, 01:53:49 am
Ya, well, both versions work, but the new convention is the "correct" way to do it.  So, if you're copying from an old mod.ini when giving instructions, just be sure you proofread them & correct as necessary.  However, you don't really need to change all your mod.inis to the new convention unless you want to; as I said, the old version still works.
Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: Grizzly on August 29, 2007, 09:13:14 am
And then the major question: Will it still work when the new SCP release comes out?
Title: Re: Freespace Port 3.0.4 Released!
Post by: jr2 on August 29, 2007, 09:16:40 am
Yes.

However, when they do away with mod.inis (3.7.0?), they will be moot, IIRC.

Is there a single download version of this with best version everything (textures, UI etc) included? I'd rather download 3 GB thing that just works than 30+2+5+2+2+6+7+4+6+7+6 etc small packages and try so figure how they fit together. I'll be playing TBP in the meantime since the offered a nice 900 MB download - there's few minor issues in their 3.4 release but I don't mind downloading that 900 MB again as it's not out of my time when it's going there in the background.

The first post (op) says Go Here and there's a LONG list of things you may or may not want to get for best graphics. These things should be included and enabled by default and if there's a performance issue then you disable them.

There isn't any single-download option here. The simplest thing is to go to http://fsport.hard-light.net and download anything that sounds important. Then just extract everything to /freespace/fsport.

Or, if you want to use Turey's Installer, download everything FSPort related.

There's a whole FSPort pack in Hades Combine, but it exceeds 200mb and with those speeds, it might be a pain in the arse to download from there.
