Can't recall the mission name, but it's in the nebula. Basically you're supposed to defend some junk ship against a bunch of stealth fighters (who are on your side... it's an excercise). Anyways, I got through the whole mission and managed to disable the Tiamat so it couldn't jump. I got it down to 3% or so and then ordered the other fighters to depart (cause I want credit for the kill and all :D)... anyways, I sped up time 64x and just sat there and firea away at the thing for half an hour (in game time, not sped up time)... it stayed at 1% for like 20 minutes... what's going on? Is it indestructable?
Also, is it possible to keep the stealth fighters from destroying the junk ship? If so how?
-
Yes, but because it's a corvette, you'll have to work at it. It has the big damage flag, and the only weapon available to you with that flag is the EMP, which does very little damage.
-
Well like I said I sat and pounded away at it for a LONG LONG LONG time. Are you sure it's not rigged so it can't be destroyed. It took me 5-10 minutes in sped up 64x time to get it from 4% to 1% but I sat there for 20mins in 64x time it didn't kill it. Finally I accidentally hit accelerate and rammed into it and exploded heh ;)

You can keep the stealths away from the junk ship by shooting at them. :) After a while the Shivans come and blow it up, so it's a wasted effort really. I think I had Aquitaine kill the Tiamat once... It is your best bet in delivering damage to it anyway. I think the recommendations said to keep close to it so that Aquitaine has it on sensors all the time. Kind of like being a spotter for the big guns. Dunno if that really works since the Tiamat stays close by anyway.
It's a stupid mission anyway. I just use time compression until the Fenris is destroyed and the shoot shivans until Aquitaine jumps out.
-
i had the same problem with that missions.
the tiamat seems immortal when she reaches 1%.
but this happened me also in some missions i fredded with a Vasudan pachet corvette (from Inferno)... is there a reason for this 1% immortality?
-
ngtm1r already told it... Corvette needs "big gun" to destroy. Such as beam, bomb or capital ship blobby turret. Smaller weapons can do damage to ships with "big damage" flag, but cannot destroy them completely. For that you need something with a little more punch. It makes sense in a way if you think about destroying an Abrams with a rifle. Sure you can shoot off lights and possibly damage the tracks, but it won't blow up until you bring in the bazooka...
-
yeah, ok, good, but you can destroy an abrams with a rifle after it has been hit by several bazooka shots. In the same way, it should be possible to destroy a Cv (badly damaged) with a fighter.
Anyway, is there a way to disable the big damage flag, and to make a Cv destroyable by a fighter?
-
Extract the ships.tbl from the root_fs2.vp and remove all "big damage"-flags from ships of corvette-size and above.

thankz

You know, honestly, I'm inclined to agree... that mission isn't very well thought out, and the EMP missiles, in fact, do not have the Big Damage flag, basically in that mission, the corvette kill, though you get credit for it, is not based on skill, it's based on getting lucky and having the Aquitaine destroy it for you... it's another one of those borked missions in my book.
-
is a crap mission, i must of played that mission more than 50 times andnot once have i destroy the tiamat.
ive tried a range of offensive moves, none witch seems to of worked..
-
After all, it's not so difficult to destroy the Tiamat. Just use tilde+K.

Yes they do. Or you're using wonky tables.
-
yeah but darth you cant pass that mission on cheating. dont forget to put in www.freespace2.com, before tilde + k.
-
Just use tilde+K.
I saw that. ;7
-
But I used cheats only on that mission to get the medal. ;)
:nervous:
Why are you all looking at me? You don't believe me?
Ehm... Can you repeat your question? How I could have destroyed 347 Gigas and 29 Gargants single-handedly?
:nervous:

it's always bothered me how long the Tiamat survives during that mission. Surley a destroyer should be able to lay waste to a Corvette, even if it were retreating. Wether that was intentional or just further proof how un-destroyer like the Hecate is I dunno.
-
Well table jerkers can obviously see that they are both poor ships and Hecate could probably destroy the Moloch.
But when you look at it from mission atmosphere and storytelling point, and with the eyes of a first time player... Aquitaine is ambushed by a Shivan corvette in the nebula (which happens to be a hostile and unknown environment for GTVA). Plus all Shivan fighters and bombers. In FS universe the Aquitaine would genuinely be in danger. Thought the Moloch would be gambling heavy since it is afterall engaging a vastly heavier ship. When these things are considered, it's not so unbelievable scenario that the Moloch survives. Aquitaine was afterall focusing on fleeing and not destroying the corvette.
From the viewpoint of a vetran gamer and table sniffler... Well, Hecate sucks monkey balls when it comes to capship firepower. And it is reasonable to assume Aquitaine had some bombers in the hangar. Well its a badly designed mission. There should have been something else threatening the Aquitaine than a mere Moloch. Like a destroyer lurking nearby, or a bunch of cruisers...
-
Probably the Aquitaine was not withdrawing because it was ambushed by the corvette. Command says only "Aquitaine, set course for the Gamma Draconis jump node. We're pulling you out of there.", but Command doesn't explain why. Maybe it could be because the NTF launched their final offensive in Gamma Draconis, so Command wants as much firepower as possible, but we don't know because Command doesnt' explain why. If it was only for the ambush, probably the Aquitaine would have jumped in another part of the nebula, leaving 2 Deimos to terminate the Moloch, maybe with Alpha wing destroying the Tiamat's beams to pave the way for the corvettes.
-
Good point, but irrelevant. Aquitaine was withraving in any case. Why it was doing it has no effect on the ongoing engagement. It was ambushed by the Shivans, and was heading out.
After the Aquitaine and Tiamat jump off the space around the node is empty. Neither GTVA nor Shivans demonstrated even the slightest desire to consolidate their positions around the node. Possibly because GTVA was more comfortable in the GD side of the node and shivans had a fleet of juggernauts coming to pwn all. Poor tactical decision from both sides.

Just pound the Tiamat's beam cannons and missile launchers with as much destructive weaponry you've got while your wingmen defend the Aquitane. Its a race to bring the corvette down to 10% in the shortest time. Then let the Aquitane's beams finish the final 10%.

tempests and hornets?
but then you got fighters on your wingmens tail shooting your wingmen down, and a favorable solution is harpoons. so i stuck with a trade off.

Yes they do. Or you're using wonky tables.
No they don't. I just checked weapons.tbl fresh out of root_fs2.vp to make certain. The only flags it has are Player-allowed and EMP. I have no idea why the rumour persists that it is flagged huge but it isn't. And I even went back and checked the 1.0 tables from the root_fs2.vp in my old HotU install to see if it was a 1.0 vs 1.2 thing.

Just tell your wingmen to attack the enemy...don't give them guard orders. Let them seek and destroy. Problem solved.
Tempests and Hornets are ideal for just absolutely pummeling the Tiamat. If you can rope a wingman in that helps too.
