I have been trying everything I can think of to fix this problem, I've read every FS_open FAQ I can get my hands on, but none of them even mention this problem. I setup my Open using the launcher, get everything the way i want it to be, but when i click apply, i get a "failed to set an important registry entry" error, and the launcher closes. Trying thr "run" button, it says "Can't understand 'VideoCardFS2Open' registry entry", followed by "run the FS2 open launcher to fix problem" alert. The thing is, my regiistry tab is completely blank, what do I put in that tab as all the FAQs dont even mention it. I'm running the 5.5 launcher, and the fs2_open_3_6_9-7dot9x.exe
Please help, I really want to be able to use Open, after all the good things I've heard about it

Try installing the latest version of OpenAL, if you haven't already.
-
Did you run FS2 andpatch it to 1.2 BEFORE installing FS_Open?
Might be useful to make sure you set up all the options in FS2 before installing FS_open as well.
-
Go to the video tab and try changing the options there then click apply. You could try running the standard FS2 launcher (freespace2.exe) and running set up. Then go back to the launcher and see if your registry tab is still blank. It definitely shouldn't be after doing that.
If that doesn't work you can always add it manually with regedit but I'm not hugely keen on that solution I'll talk you though it if nothing else works.

Just a shot in the dark here, but do you have admin privileges on that computer? It might not even be possible, but maybe Windows isn't letting FSO write to the registry? I dunno.

I already have the latest openAL

Yes, I was running patched retail before I tried FS2 Open

What is regedit, please talk me through the editing process, nothing seems to have worked

Does anyone have those registry entries for Freespace Open? I have a file, but nowhere to put it. Anyone got space for like a 10 kb file?
-
I suspect UT may have hit upon a possible cause. A lack of administrator privileges could cause that error.
Well if you don't have them you won't be able to use regedit anyway so it will fail when you try this. If that happens simply get the admin for your PC to run the launcher and everything should be fine.
1) Go to:
Start -> Run.
2) Type in "Regedit", and click Ok
3) Go to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Volition -> Freespace2
4) Backup your Registry, just to be sure. Do this by clicking:
Registry -> Export Registry File.
(Export "All" if you want, if you're worried you'll screw up something somewhere else by accident. Otherwise just export the selected branch.)
5) Select:
Edit -> New -> String Value
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/FAQ-Images/Technical/Registry1.gif)
6) Rename the newly created value to "VideocardFs2open" (No Quote Marks!)
7) Right-click on "VideocardFs2open" and select "Modify"
8) Change the value data to "OGL -(1024x768)x32 bit" (No Quote Marks!)
Close Regedit.

well, I guess i can't play fs2 open, my regedit program cant do any functions, always gives an "cannot 'perform task' - error during 'operation' " and will not do anything, even with full administartion privileges. Thanks for the help anyways
-
Sounds like you have a program somewhere locking the registry against changes.
Or a MUCH bigger problem.
-
What kind of virusscanner(s) are you using?
-
I'm using AVG Free edition version 7.1
-
Firewall? Anti-spyware?
I know that spybot installs a program that can block registry access.
-
I don't think he ever verified that he was logged in as administrator. Or did I miss it?
-
even with full administartion privileges.
Of course I'm assuming that it's typo rather than a cruel prank involving a user account called administartion :D

Yeah, I had just woken up from a little nap :o I'm running avg free ver 7.1, and MAXSecure spyware detector trial version, and my firewall is the one that gets auto-installed in one of the windows XP service/security update packs.
-
Oops, sorry I missed it.
I'm pretty sure you can't install in safe mode either. Have you tried unplugging your modem so you can turn off all that security stuff?

Yeah, that came to mind and stil didnt work :mad: I think I might just drop FS open and stick with retail if i cant get this working soon
-
I'll be surprised if retail works properly without the ability to set registry keys.

Open regedit again, select HKLM, go to the edit menu, hit permissions, make sure admins have full control checked under allow and unchecked under deny.
-
they were already checked :(
