Title: Ship classes
Post by: dogeddie on December 29, 2006, 07:08:39 am
Is there somewhere I can find out what the prefixes for the ships mean? For example, GTD, GTF?

In general, the last letter(s) announces the ship type, the first one(s) announce the owner. Shortly:

GT = Galactic Terran
PV = Planetary Vasudan
GV = Galactic Vasudan
GTVA = Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance (AFAIK only used as a prefix to GTVA Colossus)
S = Shivan (duh)
NT = Neo-Terran

F = Fighter
B = Bomber
C = Cruiser
Cv = Corvette
D = Destroyer
SD = Superdestroyer
J = Juggernaut
Tr = Transport

Is there any others?

Thus, GTD is Galactic Terran Destroyer and GTF would be Galactic Terran Fighter, but GTF and GTB are usually only used as type designations, not parts of ship names because fighters and bombers are using squad markings instead of individual names.

Funny how hte Iceni is called a command frigate and is designated NTF Iceni..

F for frigate or for (Neo-Terran) Front? LOL  <--- SARCASM
Come to think of it, Frg should be a Frigate.

having had nothing to do with helping you, i accept your thanks.   :p

as to the Iceni question, wouldn't it be better to abbreviate to Fg?

I've seen frigate (in user-made mods) designated both Ff and Fg. Personally, I think Fg works better.

As for the Iceni's name, I always thought that it stood for Neo-Terran Front, they dropped the designation at the end because the Iceni was a unique ship, kinda like the GTVA Collossus, which technically should have been GTVJ Collossus.

SD is never actually used officially. The Lucifer is sometimes referred to as a superdestroyer in briefings and so on, but is still designated as a D.

True, but SSD Lucifer just sounds better.

Why does that make me envision an obscenely huge triangular ship commanded by a advanced Cylon...  :nervous:

Herra, Transport is just T, not Tr. There is also SC, Science Cruiser. And also A, AWACS, and G, Gas Miner. And I is for Installation

Okay, thanks for corrections.

...So, it's "Galactic Terran-Vasudan AWACS Colossus" then?

No, the Colossus is Galactic Terran Vasudan Alliance Colossus, being an icon of the alliance.
