Howdy! I always want to see nice looking 32-bit+alpha FS2 icons, so... I made it. Here it is. This icon is scalar (both versions) which means it will look good with small 16x16 ico and also with all larger sizes (up to 64x64). Of course larger is better ;). Hope you like it! Previews and links below.
Standard version (only for lighty backgrounds):

Glow version (for all kind of backgrounds):

Download:
Standard version (Right click -> Save as) (http://freespace.pl/hosted/foxer/gtva_ico/gtva.ico)
Glow version (Right click -> Save as) (http://freespace.pl/hosted/foxer/gtva_ico/gtva_glow.ico)
Update 2007-07-16:
Standard version up to vista's 256x256 and both 16- and 32-bits (Right click -> Save as) (http://freespace.pl/hosted/foxer/gtva_ico/2_gtva.ico)
PS. I want to make one more for FRED2 and one for Launcher also.

Sweet, I'll bet these get used somehow, somewhere. Thanks foxer, good job! ;)
-
Please post PNG versions too, and up to 128x128. :)

Here you go :)

Thanks! :D
And I guess you don't mind if they are used officially, right? There wouldn't be much in the way of credit probably, which is why I ask, we would just know where it came from. :)
It would just be nice to replace the current .ico for the EXE with this one (the standard version anyway). Plus, something is needed for the Linux and OS X versions (hence the PNG request).
-
Sure I don't mind! I'll be glad to see EXE with this ico. Feel free to use it :D.
-
Alright, unless Goober miraculously objects to it for some reason, I'll add it to CVS to replace the current OS X icon and the .ico used in the Windows EXE. I'll also add the 48x48 PNG version for Linux users. Expect to see it with future builds. :)
-
"Miraculously" objects? That would be something of a dysmiracle, wouldn't it?
This looks great. :)
-
Thanks for that... all y'all... the old one looks horrible at 64X64
-
Hey Foxer, can you post one of the normal version as a 16-bit .ico?
I tried adding it to a binary and it looks all screwed up. I'm not sure whether that is a MSVC6 thing, or if 32-bit icons just don't work on anything older than WinXP, but I can't really use it as is in an EXE. I don't really have the graphics tools to do this myself anymore, being a Linux user and all. :)
-
you definately need to make them in PNG format and in 128 because on windows vista, anything less than 128 pixels x128 pixels doesn't look good in comparison to the other icons around it.

you need winxp or up for 32 bit support.

Hmm, thought that might be the case. We'll have to use a 16-bit version for the game then.
-
iirc there should be a way to set the windows exe to automagically choose which icon to use depending on what is supported.

It will, but those images have to already exist in the ico. I'm just not sure that this ico includes those other color sets.
-
It doesn't. 5 images from 64x64 to 16x16 in 24 bit is all either of them has.
-
Have an update to this topic. I compile a new version of "standard" (non-glow) icon. It contains graphics up to 256x256 resolutions (which will look very good at Vista OS) and both 16- and 32-bit color sets. Unfortunately filesize increased very with this operation (269 kB). Hope that will do and will work this time. That can be a nice addition to 3.6.10 open's version right? :)
Link with new version to download is in the first post of this topic.
I can work a little on quality or number of images (size versions) of icon in .ico file to decrease filesize if you want me to, Taylor.

Nice...
-
lol, i didn't see this before. looks awesome.
-
Necrothreaded ;)
Does anyone have in mind including those new icons to the recent fs2_open builds?
-
I thought I had added them before. I guess I forgot to commit those changes to CVS/SVN.
-
That would be awesome.
-
Also Vistaish FRED 2 Icon would be appreaciated. The old one looks ugly on my desktop :(

Have what in mind?
I'm personally going to continue using my own icon (http://users.tkk.fi/~lmiettun/Kuvat/FS2_Open/SCP_Perseus_icon-mipmapped.ico) depicting a GTF Perseus in SCP-green livery:
;7
Anyone is free to use it if they want. I always thought the GTVA insignia to be a bit boring as an icon - functional, sure, and well scalable, but boring. Which is why I use this. Some might argue that you can't see any details on the fighter but aside from 16 pixel size, it's pretty much recognizable as Perseus, and higher resolutions work better.
However, I don't think it would be necessary to include moar icons in the executables themselves, the current ones work well enough as default icons and embedding more images into the executables would just needlessly increase file size - if people want to use other icons, I'm sure they can download some* or make their own, it isn't exactly rocket science...
*a good place to upload icons would likely be FreeSpaceMods' Miscellaneous section. They aren't exactly very hard on storage space or bandwidth so hosting them would be trivial compared to behemoths like TBP or BtRL or the MediaVP's... :p
-
That's true, but from what I can see, 2_gtva.ico is better in every way than the current icon (except for the 200kb jump), while looking almost the same, and it should work on all the platforms it already did. I see no real reason not to switch to it.
-
I have added the icons provided by Foxer to the executable. The gtva.ico file replaces the original, while the gtva_glow.ico is accessible by creating a shortcut and choosing the select icon button.
-
Due to popular demand I am bumping this thread.
I've made some new icons, in 2562, 1282, 642, 482, 322, 242, and 162 resolutions. All are 32 bit. Provided is a comparison, kinda like the one earlier in the thread.

The icons themselves are available here (http://www.game-warden.com/masterpokey/fsoIcons.zip).

Are not.
-
Fixed. It's a *nix server, so the capitalization made it barf. (It might be good to remove the link from your quote, cuz that one is still wrong).
-
Yeah, I noticed the one used in the icon is not as wide. It's a matter of preference, I guess. The executables, however, use a specific icon and I don't think it's easy to change that (as opposed to a shortcut, where it's easy to change the icon).
A single .ico file (zipped), which should display the optimal resolution automatically (http://www.game-warden.com/masterpokey/fsoIcon_mips.zip)
-
I actually like the ones that phreak added to SVN more. I would like to see similar replacement icons for FRED though. And I also think it would be better if the icon backgrounds were just transparent, and not 3 solid colors to choose from. Unless that's just an example.
-
The shades of gray are just to show how it looks on different backgrounds. It has an alpha channel, so it'll look fine everywhere (assuming you think it looks fine anywhere).

Lovely.
By the way, what font is that?
-
To be honest I'd rather see the FS2 logo on FS2_Open and FRED2_Open builds replaced with a generic "Powered by SCP" logo that anyone can use. Quite a few TCs end up shipping with an FS2 logo on their builds because they don't have anyone willing to recompile the build just to change the logo. It's rather silly really.
The launcher should be the one with the FS2 logo since it's the one that is the FS2 specific file.

S like SCP.

Oh that's so totally hot. It's like Superman meets the Hulk meets Freespace.
