before i ask anything, i just wanna let you guys who saw my little incident in my "hacked media tables" thread that i'm sorry...i tend to do stuff like that alot, and now i got the problem fixed anyway. now i gotta problem with the new download.
is it suppesed to be a .EXE file? cause it isint. i just extract it and i get:
installersection.class
browsercontrol.class
freespaceopeninstaller.class
THFileIO.class
and a folder named "meta-inf" containing:
manifest.MF
does anybody know what i'm supposed to do with this? thanks in advance.
as a few of you have read what i said, i am VERY oblivious. if i got the wrong thing, someone tell me where to get the actual one.
and the little "uber Windows pack" isint enough. want a installer with all the mediaVPs, mods, and campaigns, like the last one. and preferably in a .EXE file. the website my current FS open installer gave me was a broken link, so i'm forced here once again.

I think I know what you did. You used some program to unpack the .jar file, which you're probably not the first person unfamiliar with java to do. Haven't used the installer myself, but I'd assume that what you need to do is simply run the .jar file with the java runtime environment, which under windows is usually done from the command prompt by typing "java <whatever-program-you-want-to-run>" in the proper directory.
If it's set up for it though, you can also simply double click on the .jar file in windows explorer, so you might want to try that first and save some hassle if it works :)
-
The problem is:
The jar seems to download as a zip for most people, including me.
Change the zip extension to jar, then run it. If it doesn't run, and you have java installed, you need to install Turey's java utilities (http://www.fsoinstaller.com/files/installer/java/javautilities/javautilities.exe).
Until he gets the kinks worked out, I suggest using the Shivan install procedure in my sig, it's quite comprehensive.
-
i also stronly recommend Shivan's install guide over Turey's installer. Its a great idea but very poorly executed imho.
-
ShivanSPS needs to update his pack. 1.9c is too old to recommend.
When he does I'd like to see it done in a way that includes Turey's updater and all the stuff required to make it run easily. That would give us the best of both worlds.

i lost you there.
pluss, i never got this ".jar" file. i just got a bunch of .class and that .MF file
-
You said you extracted them. It's the file that you extracted them from (presumably a .zip file), that you apparently need to rename to a .jar extension if it isn't one already.
-
how do i rename? i know how to rename the name of a file, but i don't know how to rename the end part (I.E. .exe, .rar, .zip, etc...)
i tried right clicking and using the "open with..." function and i used java binary thingy and nothing happened at all. i'm gonna try the link huggybaby posted.
EDIT: i just did tried it again. it some command prompt that is asking me for my freespace directory. i put it in and i THINK it's istalling. my question is, how come this is so differant and so much more damned complicated then the other installer i downloaded before this release?
-
OK, never overestimate I guess...
haloboy100:
You should have a file called "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip". Left click on it one time to highlight it. Right click on it one time. Left click on "rename" in the dialogue box that pops up. Now rename "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip" to "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar".
If you see more than one file at any time, you did it wrong.
-
i already tried that. it diden't work. i still saw a winRAR archive with the name "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.jar"
and pluss it never had the name "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller.zip" i just saw "FreeSpaceOpenInstaller" as a winRAR archive
-
I can't really help you figure out all the winrar, winzip, file naming stuff. Your PC obviously is configured differently from mine. Turey is working on a GUI, that will help you when it's released.
Karajorma: Shivan IS working on 2.0. He will release it when the mediavps 3.6.9 is done.
I've been using Turey's installer/updater since day one. I don't know anyone else who has used both Turey's and Shivan's. There are very good reasons I'm recommending Shivan's at this point, the two most important being ease of use, and the fact that Shivan's results in a better install. By better I mean details like when you select a mod, you actually see a bitmap and description in the mod details window.
Turey is still developing his installer, and there are other options in the works too; this situation is changing rapidly. It's a good but confusing time for newbies.
Eventually everyone will finally agree just what the hell the ideal install is supposed to look like, moving this subject from the realm of arcana to the realm of common knowledge, where it certainly isn't now. My install guide is the starting point.

so your saying after i installed using this it owuld be a best idea to get the best installer after this whole "best installer" thing is worked out?
clearly i join HLP at the worst possible time..
-
No, you joined at the best time. If you had joined a year ago you would have been way more confused than you are now.
If your Freespace is working now, then enjoy it.
If you're concerned with tiny details (like I am) then read my guide and look at the pictures.
All I can say is be patient. To my knowledge (which isn't much, I just joined here, just like you) there have never been more people working to make it easy for new users to install and enjoy the game.

I'm not at all surprised by that :)

I know. Who do you think is responsible for creating those bitmaps and mod.ini files in the first place? AFAIk Shivan uses the pack I made a little while back when I was trying to convince people why they should use mod.ini files :)
The problem is that until Shivans 2.0 pack comes out Turey's installer is the better one of the two. Shivan's pack installed an old build (Which IIRC doesn't even support multiplayer on FS2NetD with 3.6.9 Official clients or hosts). It requires several updates to be installed on top of 1.5 (further complicating matters especially for people who found it via the torrent rather than this site) and ShivanSPS hasn't been around to support it half as much as Turey has been for his installer (although he hasn't exactly shirked that job).
That said both guys have done some really good work and have made my life a lot easier so I'm looking forwards to further cooperation between the two to settle the shape for a good install between them.

Thanks, that's really a major enhancement.

Indeed, convergence would be good in this case. What I really need to see is for Turey's updater to update against installed files via some kind of check. Right now it doesn't, and he's aware of that. If I have a perfect install and run the updater, it will recognize nothing and download everything. That's a LOT of downloading. I assume he will fix it but until then I consider it a WIP.

ya it's working, but ever since my mother bored fried (3 days ago) i need to completly reinstall all my games and FS_open. and trust me, this "new release" sure isint helping...
-
For some of us, it's a labor of love. I could put a custom FS2 SCP build with tweaks, rare campaigns, and customizations together with my hands tied behind my back and my eyes blindfolded. Some others can't and choose to complain. Meh. Seek and ye shall find. HLP points the way. And remember "modular tables are your friend"
-
if modular tables are my friend...then can somebody tell me what they are? never did anything romotly related to programming before...except a TINY be of SEXPing in FRED.
-
Who say that you cant use the Turey installer/updater in my pack? the packs have everything that in the Tureys installer/updater, the file/file and folder maps and folder names are the same too, well not for the CVS... so you can use the Turey updater to update the contains in the 1.9c pack.
probably the Turey updater will be in the 2.0 too, that a lot more easy/effective than giving "updateers packs" that become old very soon. So in this way, everyone could download the 2.0 at anytime and them use the Turey updateer inside them to update everything that may become old. SO i will only give "updateer packs" to add or fix something that Tureys updater dont.
-
seriously, you 2 should form a team...or partnership...or something. it would makes things alot less complicated for newbs like me...
-
well just finished installing the fs open and got "openAL not found" thingy. i'll install that and get going. thanks for the help again guys.
-
Poor guy doesn't have extensions turned on.

Poor guy doesn't have extensions turned on.
Very first thing I do in any new install of Windows.
-
"extension"?
-
Dammit haloboy, how old are you? You were smart enough to join this forum. Have you ever heard of freaking Google? Extensions are the most important part of a file.
This is my last free advice to you until you start showing some initiative:
READ ME HALOBOY! CLICK ON ME AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS SO YOU CAN SEE FILE EXTENSIONS! AND DON'T TELL ME YOU CAN SEE THEM ALREADY! (http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/a0b4607a-6fa8-42ab-aef6-7418183389da1033.mspx)
-
Calm down huggy. I know it can get annoying but if I can keep my cool (most of the time) then so can you. :)
-
Thanks for the reminder, I stand corrected. It's just that I've been working with Haloboy for so long...it feels like...
-
He shouldn't even need to change the extension if he gets the new .exe version.
-
Heh, reminds me of this old thing (http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html) but then again, the world is changing (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct).
Any way, google gave me this guide (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/using/workingefficiently/tips/extensions_on.asp) for enabling file extensions in windows.
-
Good links, I hadn't seen that question asking guide before. I'd better read it meself.
-
If it makes you feel any better HuggyBaby, he's not the first Forum member to not know some of the more basic details on computer-use ;) As long as they learn something and don't need to ask again, I don't really mind.
-
i don't got windows vista you know.

i don't got windows vista you know.
If you still need to run the Installer, you can get an exe version here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.msg906819.html#msg906819).
-
it doesen't matter since *somehow* i got it to work.
